Exciting News, Energize are on the

move!

Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin (STW), are delighted to tell you of their forthcoming office move. With effect from Monday 5th October Energize will be based within University Centre Shrewsbury at Guildhall in Shrewsbury.

Our new address will be: Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin

Guildhall Frankwell Quay

Shrewsbury Shropshire SY3 8HQ

Telephone: 01743 297191 Emails: Remain unchanged [[email protected]]

This move presents an excellent opportunity for Energize STW to continue to remain at the heart of the County. UCS’s location in the centre of Shrewsbury provides excellent transport and communication links, and co-location will provide significant links to both sporting and non-sporting communities which will help both Energize and the University achieve their objectives. UCS is keen to establish itself as a modern and forward thinking University that is aligned to its local community, both in terms of driving economic growth across the County and also improving the quality of community life for local people. This remit fits perfectly with Energize’s vision, mission and values and is supportive to the network of organisations Energize leads in utilising sport and physical activity to deliver health improvement to Shropshire’s population. For the students, a close relationship with Energize will improve the quality of their experience whilst studying at UCS and will provide skills to improve future employability.

Exciting times all round for Energize, students and the local community! We look forward to welcoming visitors. Further details will follow.

The Craven Arms Walking for Health group has recently been revitalised with the help of the Discovery Centre, the vibrant community facility in the heart of Craven Arms which offers easy walking routes and a cuppa in the cafe at the end of the walks. A significant promotional push was carried out prior to the relaunch walk in July, including a taster walk at a Diabetes awareness day, posters in local facilities, contact made with local churches, articles in ‘Community e- newsletter’ and the’ forty-niner’, fliers distributed to local housing in immediate area and 100 fliers distributed via local newspaper, The walks are led by Helen d’Albert and Carys Palmer (a volunteer walk leader from the Clun group) and are held every Wednesday at 10:30 from the Discovery Centre. The group now has 11 walkers registered on the books and on the 19th August there were 11 of us on the walk, including a mum and her two young children. All seem keen and enjoy the social aspect as much as stretching their legs! If you are interested in joining the walk or training as a walk leader please email Helen d’Albert or phone on 01743 255059.

Sport England has launched their MOVES Tool, help you work out the economic and health benefits of sport and activity. At a click, MOVES lets you compare groups of people who play sport or are active against people who are not. It can compare different types of activity, estimating how much the risk of key diseases – like cardiovascular disease and diabetes – has been lowered for those who do play sport. Impact • Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a sports programme where there

are clear health outputs • Find out which sports programmes work and what doesn’t, and why • Demonstrate the return on investment for sports programmes. As well as the tool itself, there is a user guide to help you get the most from MOVES. To find out more about how the tool works, and to use it, create an account on our website or login.

Time to get inclusive: Activating participation with

disabled students in Higher Education

Research from English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) gives valuable insight into why disabled people are active, how they currently participate and the nature of opportunity disabled students are more likely to be attracted to. Sport in higher education has an opportunity to be innovative in how it promotes itself to disabled students.
