National Award for Shropshire Satellite Club

A Shropshire–based golf satellite club has claimed second prize at Sport England’s Satellite Club Awards. The Shropshire Golf Satellite Club took the prize in recognition of its work to encourage more children to play golf. The award was presented in London this week by Minister for Sport and Tourism, Tracey Crouch MP and England Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi MBE.

The Shropshire Golf Satellite Club, delivered by Shropshire Golf Club, initially based at the Sutherland’s School, have offered regular coaching to over 50 youngsters to date. Focusing on those who do not regularly exercise, the programme continues to transform not only how young people perceive sports like golf, but also allows them to bring transferable skills like concentration and patience into the classroom.

Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Club Development Manager Joe Lockley said: “The Shropshire Golf Satellite Club shows that Sport can be used to shift behaviour, and given the opportunity everyone can help find themselves through the power of sport. At Energize we are firm believers that sport can be used as a vehicle for change and that there is a sport for everyone”

Minister for Sport and Tourism, Tracey Crouch MP, who presented the award with England Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi MBE, said: “The Shropshire Golf Club has shown incredible commitment to sport.” “I am thrilled that this community organisation has been recognised for its brilliant achievements.” Cick here to read more

Energize welcomes new government strategy for sport

Energize, the county sport and physical activity partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin has today welcomed the new strategy published by the Government, Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation. The strategy signals a change of direction for investment in grassroots sport and physical activity, including a greater focus on children and a commitment to tackling growing levels of inactivity. It encourages the sport sector to adapt better to changing consumer trends, places more attention on the wider benefits derived by individuals and communities from their participation in sport and activity, more locality based investment and a strengthening of governance and welfare in sport.

Chair of Energize, Dave Sherratt, said: “At Energize we are passionate about the power of sport to make a difference to people’s lives. We have first-hand evidence to demonstrate where our programmes and projects have enhanced health and wellbeing, created stronger communities, stimulated employment and economic growth, developed young people and improve educational attainment. We are pleased to see the 5 key outcomes placed at the heart of the new strategy. Energize are also well placed to support the strategy as we link national bodies with local partners and we welcome the support for ‘local areas to take collective ownership for the sport and physical activity agenda’ and the commitment to significant locality based investment. We will continue to facilitate local partnerships with our key partners in local government and everyone involved in sport to combine effort, reduce duplication and enhance impact.” Chris Child, Energize Chief Executive, commented: “At Energize we strongly believe that there is an activity for everyone, something that will help get their heart beating faster and once people find the activity for them we know the impact this can have on their lives. We therefore particularly welcome the increased focus on engaging under-represented groups, the ‘removal of unhelpful distinctions between sport and physical activity’, and the extension of Sport England’s remit to ensure children from an early age are given the skills and motivation to develop an early love of an active lifestyle.” Please turnover

This new strategy also signals a need for a change in approach and this is something we fully embrace. Whilst CSPs have become an important element of the sporting landscape, have successfully delivered high profile national programmes, and have good stakeholder support; we recognise that there is significant change taking place within our operating environment and that we need to adapt in order to meet the changing needs of our customers, communities and stakeholders. We therefore welcome the proposed independent review of the role of CSPs and see it as a positive opportunity to demonstrate the full value of the work we do whilst also exploring new ways we can be even more effective.

It was also announced in the strategy that Government will commit to the Workplace Challenge which Energize runs locally as a member of the County Sports Partnership Network. The Workplace Challenge provides a unique mix of technology and on the ground support from Energize for businesses to get active. Chris Child also welcomed this commitment too, “It’s fantastic to see that government will lead by example to other employers and provide Civil Servants with access to the Workplace Challenge. We hope many more employers will follow in the footsteps of government and join the Workplace Challenge community which already includes 38,000 employees from over 5,000 workplaces across England.”

Other businesses are encouraged to get involved in the ‘New Year New Business’ campaign which starts in January with a National 8 Week Activity Log Challenge and a campaign which encourages employers to get their workforce active focusing on revolutionising the lunch break!

New strategy to strengthen sport from the grassroots to the elite

Government announces new strategy to strengthen sport from the grassroots to the elite. Public investment into community sport is to reach children as young as five as part of a ground-breaking new strategy on sport announced by Sports Minister Tracey Crouch today. The move will see Sport England’s remit changed from investing in sport for those aged 14 and over to supporting people from five years old right through to pensioners, in a bid to create a more active nation. Investment will be targeted at sport projects that have a meaningful, measurable impact on how they are improving people’s lives – from helping young people gain skills to get into work, to tackling social inclusion and improving physical and mental health. Funding will also be targeted at groups who have low participation rates to encourage those who do not take part in sport and physical activity to get involved. This includes supporting women, disabled people, those in lower socio-economic groups and older people. Sport England will set up a new fund in 2016 to get inactive people physically active and will support and measure participation in sport and wider physical activity going forward. At the elite end of sport, government is supporting our Olympic and Paralympic athletes beyond Rio 2016 through to Tokyo 2020 with increased exchequer funding.

If your sports club has been affected by this situation then Sport England has advice on how to recover from a flood safely and quickly. On their flood guidance page you will find lots of information on what to do when floods occur, flood planning and how to mitigate against future flooding. There is also more detailed guidance on what to do after flooding occurs in your buildings or on pitches and courts. Source of information

New research calls for better opportunities for young disabled people

New research released highlights a clear need to engage disabled people in sport and physical activity at a young age. Active Beyond Education? was commissioned by six of the UK’s National Disability Sports Organisations - British Blind Sport, Cerebral Palsy Sport, Dwarf Sports Association UK, LimbPower, UK Deaf Sport and WheelPower, in partnership with the English Federation of Disability Sport and supported by Sport England’s Inclusive Sport Fund. The report highlights: •Young disabled people can struggle to take part in sport and physical activity due to deterioration or change in their physical condition. •Young disabled people often lack ‘life skills’ such as confidence, independence and resilience. These skills can be crucial in enabling them to seek physical activity opportunities outside of the school environment. •Participation in sport and physical activity is dependent the available opportunities meeting a young disabled person’s motivations to take part. These motivations can often change during the transition from education to adulthood. •A number of key external factors impact a young disabled person’s opportunity to engage in sport during the transition period. These include access to sport inside and outside of school, support received from family and friends, availability of adaptive support, equipment and other resources. Click here for the report

. Disabled people's internet experiences revealed through Digital Inclusion Project survey

The English Federation of Disability Sport is working with the Disability Action Alliance (DAA) on the Digital Inclusion Project. The working group is aware of the key role that technology plays in people’s lives. With more and more services being delivered on the internet, the Digital Inclusion project group was keen to learn more about disabled people’s experiences in using the internet. The results from the survey are now available. The survey ran from 15 July to 25 September 2015. There were 310 responses. Of the 97.7% respondents who use the internet, four in ten (39%) say they often feel excluded from the internet. The key findings included: Four in ten (44.1%) say some sites are difficult to navigate around

because of their impairment or health condition and Four in ten (35.6%) say they find some sites confusing.

The move towards mobile responsive sites is clear with eight in ten (77.7%) saying they use the internet on other devices like phones and iPads.

Disabled people use the internet regularly for shopping (76.1%), banking (70.5%), listening to music 61.8%, YouTube 57.8%and social media/ staying in touch (74.1%). The top reason is searching for information, with nearly all respondents (96.4%) choosing that option.

Disabled people's experiences could be made better through various ways. Information being presented more clearly, links more descriptive, headings properly used was the most popular answer (69.1%). Access the report on this page

Global State of physical activity The Global Observatory for Physical Activity has released country report cards for 131 countries covering 67% of the world. Country cards collate the existing information on demographic factors, deaths related to physical inactivity, the current surveillance process and policy status, prevalence of physical activity and research metrics. An individual country card is available for each country in the UK. Overall, in the UK 16.9% of deaths can be attributed to inactivity. This is higher than the worldwide figure standing at 9%. StreetGames and the London School of Economics have produced a report exploring why young people from deprived areas don’t participate in sport. Young people from five deprived areas in England and Wales were interviewed about sports provision in their local area. The cost of playing sport was identified as the biggest barrier for young people. They would like to go to the gym or take park in sport but these activities can be too expensive. Several recommendations are made on the findings of the report including organising more informal activities and closer supervision of

spaces for activities. Read more
