Hello Division 8-A, I'm Kenneth Diep new Executive Assistant of Lieutenant

Governor: Carla Pacheco of Division 8-A. I am very honored to have been appointed this position. This is a great achievement for me as I've been working with my school's Key Club this entire year and have found myself to tremendously enjoy this club and all it's activities. This position provides me with great opportunities to promote and connect with other Key Clubs. It's going to be an extremely heart warming experience to take care of Division 8-A's eleven Key Clubs. Working with these clubs I will help strengthen and organize the division. I plan to unite the current clubs as Division 8 was split into two divisions (Division 8 and 8-A) I hope to continue my promenade of service even after high school, through Circle K in College and Kiwanis International even after that. Thank you for your time, I look forward to working with all of you very soon! I hope to see you all in the next divisional meeting July 7th 2011.

New Divisional Officers

Hello Division 8-A, My name is Omnia Ismail and I am your new Divisional Secretary. I am 17 years old and currently a junior at William Cullen Bryant High school. I plan on working a lot with the key clubs in our division. Help them out, if you ever need anything. Know you can contact me if you can’t reach Carla :) Well, since I’m new to this job my goal is really to get officers to hand in the their MRF’s and FRF’s on time basically. I addition, not only do I plan on participating in Key Club during high school; but also during my College years. Regardless of the fact that I have only been here for a mere year, Key Club has been an enormous part of my life. I matured in Key Club, personality wise and enhanced my team-working skills, along with my leadership critiques; met new people; and made new friends. It was like I had a second family. I really hope that all Key Club members get to have the same experience as I had with the club. I enjoy key club events and wish I had joined sooner. As the newly appointed secretary of the division I feel that this position will help me become even more involved with Key Club International. Even though my job is only “paperwork” wise, I will promote Key Club on all levels as well as promote Circle K to the graduating seniors. I look forward to working with all of you! See you at the next Divisional Meeting on July 7th, 2011.

Hey, New York State District Key Club!

A lot of you do not know me yet and even more of you have not formally met me yet. With this, I am your newly elected District Key Club Editor, Amber Lee.

As Editor, I have many thoughts and ideas for the Empire Key, a very essential part of my duty. The Empire Key would not be a state newsletter without the incorporation of all LTG’s and Key Clubs around New York State. I look very forward to working with all of you and rushing everyone to hand in their newsletters. I’m sure that it will be an awesome year!

To keep closer contact, I have created a FacebookGroup:http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_115609408526712&ap=1. I would like all Editors to join. Creative ideas and suggestions can be shared. It will also be a great place to gain a stronger connection since internet will be one of our main communication uses. Updates will also be provided weekly or as much as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] or contact me at (347)6533656. I will be sure to reply. Have a great summer! (Work is still in session during the summer)

This is your newly elected Webmaster of the New York District, Oscar Tan for the 2011-2012 service year!

Being the Webmaster has given me a great

opportunity to further enhance the communication between the District and the clubs. As District Webmaster, I have already begun with editing the District website. Recently, I’ve updated the website with all the District Board’s and LTG’s contact information. I have also provided an up-to-date description for our District Projects. Please, feel free to take a look at the updates and changes at www.nydkc.org.

I would like to ask all Key Club

Webmasters to join the Official New York District Key Club Webmasters group at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_176878475703658&ap=1. I have many goals for the upcoming year and I look forward to working with the board to provide success and service.

Hello Key Clubbers! This past year has flown by and before we knew it, it has almost come to an end. But even though the year ended in a blink of an eye, The New York District Key Clubs was able to raise an unprecedented $200,000 to the District’s Charities with $25,000 as the year’s goal. This year, with new charities, new committee staff and a new fundraising goal, we eagerly embark on a new year of service to make a difference in our schools and communities. Our ten District Charities are much diversified ranging from eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus to ending human trafficking and slave labor trade. This year, the New York District Key Club aims to raise $200,000 for the ten charities. However, raising money is only a part of the puzzle. What’s the other piece? The other piece, which is sometimes forgotten but just as important, is awareness. In order to get people outside your Key Club Homes to donate at your fundraisers, they need to be educated on all the beneficial things that these charities do. Why would someone donate to a cause they do not have knowledge of? We wish you all a successful year

of service! Lt. Governor: Nicholas Viviano Division 4

DISTRICT PROJECTS

Hello  New  York  District  Key  Clubbers!      I  hope  your  school  year  is  winding  down

nicely.  As  summer  is  approaching  and  school  is  ending,   remember  that   it   is  not   the  end  of  Key  Club.   Every   club   should   still   be   doing   service  projects  over  the  summer  and  continuing  to  be  active.  There  are  many  ways  that  your  clubs  can  remain  active   throughout   the   summer   that  are  both  fun  and  exciting.

One   idea   is   to   host   a   car   wash   in   the  school   parking   lot   or   another   open   space  nearby.  Walks  to  raise  money  are  also  always  a  great   idea  when  you   have   the   area   to  do   them  in.  You  can  also   combine   a   barbeque   after  and  gather  crowds  that  are  willing  to  participate.

Fundraisers   held   indoors   at   bowling  alleys  or  an  indoor  area  is  a  nice  break  from  the  heat  and  allows  time  for  fun  away  from  the  sun.

Are  you  looking  for  a  chance  to  just  hang  back   and   chill   and   have   a   break   from   the  fundraising?  Throw  a  picnic  or  a  pool  party  and  invite  key  clubbers  where  members  and  officers  can   discuss   ideas   for   next   school   year...   Get   to  know   more   people   and   be   ready   when  September  comes.  As  the  different  division  key  clubs   differ   in   size   and   location,   some  of   these  ideas   will   work   better   for   some   clubs   than  others.  The  varying  clubs  can  alter  the  projects  to   fit   their   unique   needs.   Remember,   Key   Club  doesn’t  end  just  because  the  school  year  ended.  Finally,   good   luck   on   all   of   your   final   exams/  regents  and  enjoy  the  summer!

Lieutenant  Governor  Katie  Coley  Division  15

SUMMER EVENTS

Page 8: Division 8-A June Newsletter

Hello Fellow Key Clubbers! As the kickoff to the service year has already happened, it is now time to FUNDRAISE FUNDRAISE FUNDRAISE! My name is Sean O’Connor, and I am the Lieutenant Governor of Division 19. I am also the committee chair for my favorite District Project, Project Eliminate! For those of you who do not know, Eliminate is the newly acquired Kiwanis project, which will be kicked off this summer. Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, also known as MNT, is a disease that is claiming the lives of 60,000 innocent children and 30,000 mothers each and every single year. MNT’s effects on the youth of the world are sickening. Tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. This disease can and will be cured. Key Clubbers around the world can help cure this disease by 2015 by only fundraising $110 million! By curing this disease, we can help save over 360,000 lives! With committee members Lieutenant Governor Marcus Mosely, Lieutenant Governor Gresa Shala, and Lieutenant Governor Bryan Comanici, and Governor Domenick Pesce, I plan to make Project: Eliminate become THE strongest District Project in the history of the mighty New York District! Lt. Governor Sean O'Connor Division 19

Unfortunately, I know that a lot of clubs tend to die down toward the end of the year as we begin to put halt on the number of events that we do. But, it should be expected that everyone come up with at least one solid idea during our break for the summer or upcoming school year. This can include a service project or fundraiser for one or more of the International Projects and Programs.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the International partners of Key Club, they are the Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes, and UNICEF. The Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises money and brings awareness to benefit hospitalized children. Money raised goes to purchasing up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct research, start outreach programs and provide health care for those whose parents cannot afford it. March of Dimes is an organization that tries to improve the health of infants by preventing premature births, birth defects and infant mortality. UNICEF is an organization that assists children through their community. They focus on improving health care, basic education, water, and sanitation in more than 150 developing countries. Let’s make sure we surpass these goals!

International Convention

Where can you find over a thousand Key Clubbers from around the world all squished into one hotel at one time waiting to exchange pins with each other, compete to see who has more spirit, and anxiously wait for a few days worth of unforgettable workshops, dances, and shows? That’s right! Every year, Key Club International hosts its annual International Convention in a different city in the United States. This year, International Convention will be in Phoenix, Arizona at the JW Marriot Desert Ridge Resort from June 29th to July 3rd. While there, we will be electing our new International Board including the International President, Vice President, and their Board of Trustees. In addition, we will be having guest mentalist Craig Karegs, who will be doing an entertainment show, several dances, and a charity walk for the project ELIMINATE, which raises money for maternal neonatal tetanus. Several Key Clubbers who are attending International Convention are also attending the tour prior to that, which includes visiting the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, and going white water rafting. Come join us in the fun next year if you haven’t gone before, and it will be an experience you will never forget!

The Air Walk formerly known as the Asthma Walk took place last Saturday the 21st of May. As always, we were required to wake up early and meet at six o’ clock in the morning in front of school. However, that was not all. I would like to apologize for the train schedule in which I was unaware that there would be so many service changes. Thus, our trip to Battery Park took over two hours. Luckily, thanks to the officers and members of Key Club, we were able to get back on track and head correctly towards our destination. We were late for the volunteer check in, but Lauren, the coordinator, was sweet enough to catch us up with all the other volunteers.

We were designated to various checkpoints as Volunteer

Marshalls which had the duty to direct walkers to the correct path. We sported red t-shirts. About thirty people attended this event. Having done the same event the year before, we were very happy to gather more information about the wonderful organization. It was another worthy experience as our members found fun within the event this year as well. After the walk, a short concert took place where Cee Lo Green, a famous artist performed. Certain members were real excited including a member named Omnia.

To end our day, we played volleyball with many volunteers from

Stuyvesant High School. We went to eat pizza and when it came to going home, we were lost again. At least we went home safe. This walk shows the importance of always trying to keep our air clean in the environment. This isn’t for us; it is for the common good of everyone. Through our long struggling train rides, we were able to show our passion in service during this walk. Keep up the great work, Bryant Key Club; we are embarking on a new journey to make a difference in this world!

The Greek Division Walk was held on May 14, 2011. Its

purpose was to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. When we first arrived, our group was small, but we held dedicated hearts. At first, we were slightly confused on what to do. Not too long after, we figured out what to do and we immediately began signing in. Within moments, we were told that before the walk, we could get free breakfast. They were also giving out free cell phone holders, one that was in the shape of Key Club’s beloved mascot, the beaver.

It seemed that we arrived a bit early. The walk began an hour later. As we were walking, we were given balloons to the colors of red, blue, and white, representing the Greek and American flag. We had fun with just the balloons as we found interesting ways to make use of them. By the time the walk was finished, I felt as if we barely began to walk at all. It was real quick due to the fact that I was having so much fun.

When we reached the finish line, there were kebabs and drinks waiting for us, along with entertainment. Other than our own Bryant Greek Club, the Bryant Gymnastics group was there as well. They did many amazing stunts that left us Key Clubbers in awe. When it was time to leave we noticed how many members still residing where they were as many did not want to leave. This goes to show that upon Community Service, there is also entertainment. Community service can definitely bring closer bonds amongst all Key Clubbers.

On May 7th, 2011, William Cullen Bryant Key Club

participated in the Special Olympics as volunteers. Special Olympics is a tournament held for people of all ages who have mental and physical disabilities. This event gives these people a chance to have fun as they play basic sports with others. This year’s Special Olympics Tournament was held in Victory Field, Forest Park in Queens. It was a worthy event of attendance. It was truly a memorable experience causing a type of impact on everyone who attended the event. Our immediate past Lieutenant Governor of Division 8 before its split, Christina An and our current Lieutenant Governor of Division 8-A, Carla Pacheco attended this event with five members from our Key Club.

We were stationed to help out at the softball game, which differed from the traditional softball to accommodate those with special needs. Francisco, our vice president, guided the people who were participating to our station and back to the awards table. Every participant got an award to show that they are truly appreciated. Carla, Christina, and two other members from John Adams Key Club were stationed in one court. Cindy (from Martin Luther Key Club), Koko, Luisa, Annuary, and I were to help the participants throw bean sacks (which were used to impersonate softballs for safety reasons) and cheer them on.

Seeing the smiles on the player’s faces after playing simple tasks was a blessing for everyone and it was all because of Key Club. This happened thanks to a lot of members in Key Club. A simple task that we do can bring hundreds of smiles to their faces. The smiles they gave us was heart warming, they showed us that our presence and support meant the world to them. Their smiles meant the world to us.

The concept of creating a community-based Key Club was born when a number of former Builder’s Club students returned to their intermediate school and asked their former Builder’s Club advisor if they could work at the school to fulfill the community service requirements of their various high schools. The high schools that these particular students attended did not have Key Clubs. The president of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside, a counselor at that intermediate school, began to survey other former students and discovered that many graduates attended one of the newer, “small high schools” that the NYC Dept. of Education has recently opened. It was also discovered that because students in NYC now have the option to attend schools located all over the city, many were unable to participate in their school’s Key Club activities because of distance, scheduling problems, etc.

In February of 2011, a group of eleven high school pioneers began to hold weekly meetings at a local pre-school. The director of that pre-school is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside and made the meeting space available. The original group members began to bring friends and we soon outgrew that space. Another past president, executive director of a local community-based organization, offered the group a permanent home in March. Within two months we had 29 members from 15 different high schools. We elected officers and applied for our charter. The Sunnyside Community Key Club was chartered on May 10, 2011. Since we submitted the charter application, several additional students have joined. We anticipate many more members in September when this year’s Builder’s Club graduates begin high school.
