update 121028 - Population Taboo

Just a note to let you know that we have not abandoned the process of thinking in reply to your questions concerning population, in fact we have been thinking about these issues since 1972 when the Club of Rome issued the famous Limits of Growth statement. Please excuse the apparent diversions that are probably already cluttering up your busy schedule, each of these pieces of the jigsaw puzzle will come together in due time. We hope.

We have prepared a draft for a walk through for the VFU Foundation Course in Technethics proposed for the VFU<->DwD session and I think the subject of population discussed in the context of de-schooling and de-design is a good way to illustrate the difference between the industrial/commercial design approach vs. the demystification via de-design and de-schooling.

First of all we’re not even sure that you are receiving our communications because of the blacklisting all were sites that we have been dealing with In the last few months. One thing we have discovered is that if we use the word ”info” in our outgoing e-mail it has a tendency to send things to the junk mail folders.

OK now to begin with, in terms of maintaining the scientific process of analysis we need to break down the problem into smaller units and discuss each unit.

You write “…Population is taboo because it confronts multiple taboos across multiple cultures… “ the academic machinery has been producing screed along these lines, that “population is a taboo”, since the seventies, here is a link:

http://www.howmany.org/taboo.php

…that gives a detailed information on the subject that has been well documented. This link is actually what we consider to be “cloned” versions of our memes. Yet this is how the work progresses in the Taoist way. “The butterfly flaps its wings in the orient and it generates a whirlwind in the east” although the problem is that these very "efficiently" designed web pages do not do the job "effectively" of delivery of the key matters. The problem with the clones is that they “marginalize” the essential message, that of the lack of information, or more precisely the suppression of information by media monopolies, on the subject of emmenagous in favor of pharmaceutical/drug cartel bottom lines…

Yes we know that the subject of population is taboo. That is eminently clear to us who have been advocating media ethics solutions for 50 years, so it does not need to be reiterated, but what has to be asked is the question that is not asked is what we’re going to do about it.

However it is important that you have addressed the point. It means that we are finally arrived at the same page on the subject after this period of time, which is encouraging, but it seems at the end you drop out when you write. “…so why ruin one’s work arguing with those who will fight you at the level of effects…”

We would argue that it is the work of the designer, or de-designer. That if there is a problem it is precisely at this point that we must de-design a solution, you write:

“Population is taboo because it confronts multiple taboos across multiple cultures. For a social liberal to raise the issue invites immediate reprisals of first-world prejudices and anti-lower class stigma.

To admit First Nations are below zero growth is to admit you had a role in genocide. To confront political policy on birth control is to invite religious wrath. Even social scientists will argue against you”

This is all true and needs to be developed further however the first step in recovery is identifying the problem, we need to go through each one of these points and ask the question why in each one of these incidents this is happening? A web page listed above actually touches on some of these that does not give any actual answers in terms of why these taboos are being perpetuated.

It is precisely our argument that through de-schooling and de-design that we will arrive at an alternative to the kind of indoctrination from the vested interest groups that are profiteering from human exploitation and thus be able to overcome these taboos. The cloned webpage above is an outgrowth of our very early efforts at raising awareness in this field. It means that we are in fact having some success at “getting the message out there” but it is not enough then, we have run out of time already because the ecological Armageddon is already upon us and GreenWashing our way into denial and avoidance which seems to be a common practice is not the answer.

Recovery begins when we get rigorously honest and start to apply science instead of scientism. You write “It [overpopulation] is also an effect, You choose addiction - but even addiction is an effect…,” We have always been advocating that the “taboos regarding overpopulation are effects” of media monopoly domination. This point is obviously missing and the academic cloned version in the link above. Addiction is a product manufactured by the disease establishment/pharmaceutical/drug cartel that is delivered via their

media monopoly bombardment of indoctrination through educational channels. The bottom line is that there’s too much money to be made from human misery. Artificial ignorance is the means by which this is achieved. So we’re not talking about effects when we’re talking about addictions were talking about root causes. For example this is the reason why we have established recovery programs for media addiction and related Anti-Nutrients addictions. In order to be able to think clearly the individual must be free of toxic substances directed at the body and mind. Unless the person is free of media addiction they cannot undo the taboos that they are indoctrinated with.

In the case of addiction to power, which is the leading cause of the hubris at the pivot of the cycle illustrated below by Gregory Bateson From his work And Ecology Of Mind, we see that this is not an effect but the root of the problem.

It is for this reason that we have been looking at the 12 step programs as a solution because it is a model that has been successful in terms of dealing with addiction. That is to say, if we know that the root of the problem is addiction to power than solving the problem we must deal directly with the problem of addiction and not get into a pattern of denial that basically green washes the subject, or simply throw our hands up in the air and say it is a taboo so there’s nothing we can do about it and let’s move on to something else. “Denial is not a river in Egypt.” If you can see that the root of the problem is addiction to power, then that is what we have to deal with like it are not if we are to solve the problem.

So what can we learn from 12 step programs on this matter of addiction and how to recover from it. Well, the first thing that we need to know is that we cannot fix the addicts. The addict must come around herself. This means that fighting a war against war addicts is just another war. It means we have to completely abandon the idea of fighting. Now although this may appear to be very similar to the idea of abandoning all hope, it is actually a 180° reversal. It is precisely the Taoist method of connecting with the un carved block, the universal blueprint. It is the Buddhist idea of getting the ego off the center of the universe. It is the principle of humility in the kabbalah i.e.:

“When man contemplates that he stands at the foot of the ladder of creation, and he stares up the ladder, he truly becomes totally nullified before the Or Ein Sof. However, he also becomes truly elated contemplating that he also is the purpose of creation, a speck of dust in the cosmos that is vitally important. Such meditation imbues man with true humility and total focus on fulfilling his purpose.”

The Ein Sof = The Christos.

Sex is not the same as procreation. There is no scriptural evidence to support the idea that "life begins with conception" in fact it is stated clearly "if it offends thee, cut it out." This is just one example of the "artificial ignorance" perpetuated by imperial religionist propaganda that is supreme arrogance in the face of that obvious fact the "life does not begin at conception", that it is a continuum. Some humility is needed here on the part of these misanthropists that loudly proclaim that they respect life.

Perhaps the most difficult thing to understand for the would be radical is that treating the addiction to power starts with the self. Peace begins at home. The pseudo libertarian idea embodied in the recent occupy movement is an example of futility in this regard. It is basically an oxymoron to believe that you can enforce a power addict to comply and surrender to your power trip. The way to teach is through exemplary action. The techno fascist must learn how to stop power tripping if she wishes others to do the same.

It is not clear that you understand this principle fully when you write: “…You can choose one causal level relationship and hope it works on the effect. albeit one only changed by personal choice, so it has causal leverage. I seem to have chosen education and “social designing.” It also takes a long time, but the effects are long lasting.”

In terms of de-designing our frame of reference and working with an objective perspective instead of a subjective one we can entertain a kind of liberal fascism advocated by writers like HG Wells and Margaret Sanger when it comes to birth control. We can of course use the latest behavioral science to enforce these objectives and we can apply global Communications Technology and advertising expertise towards the fulfillment. In fact some of these have already been applied and even so after two world wars fought over capital we have not even put a dent in the demographic J. The issue of the taboos surrounding minus zero population growth are even now in this "scientific age" more deeply clouded with superstition and myth than they were in the 16th century when women and children all over the world practiced herbal birth control. We see that brinksmanship in terms of enforced sterilization and even genocide, via the bombing of Cambodia for example and the attempts to exterminate populations have not succeeded. These actions are not praxis in restoring the ancestral herbal wisdom of the ancients that was once universal common knowledge and if this resembles the religionist moralism of Maltheus and Ricardo, it is not.

So what does the power addict have to learn from all this? Simply that all of our attempts at correcting the problem of overpopulation have failed. In short the alcoholic/addict with all of her efforts has not been able to stop drinking. Why? Because she is an addict.

This means that we have only one alternative and that is to accept that we are completely powerless over media domination by power addicts and that we ourselves are addicted to power because of it and by this very fact we are unable to undo the problem by our own resources but must put our faith in a “power greater than ourselves”

The answer in the 12 steps is simply “get off the center of the universe” and “let go and let G_D” the idea is to have the terminal connect to the main frame. This is not a new idea it is embodied in the spiritual/ethical teachings of all ages but it is not practiced by the imperial religions. This is the root of the problem. Tawney in his work Religion and the Rise of Capitalism spells it out. The taboo is religionist myth (media) for the purpose of mystification and domination and recovery is only possible via spiritual/cultural evolution. The awareness movements inspired by new age thought ( Huxley, ecumenical movements for pacifism, science of mind and the 12 steps etc.) were co-opted, but they were a beginning. We need to pick up the thread again and actually “practice our religions”.

It means that our efforts to correct the problem by “social designing” i.e.: “design” is not going to work because it is another term for “social engineering” or “techno fascism” which is precisely what the 2% controlaholic international corporations and their pawn governments have been doing, that got us into the addictions in the first place and more of the same. We do not fight fire with fire.

Alternatively if we want to get to the root of the problem then we have to analyze in a subjective way what in fact is happening to us. We must discard our hubris and realize that we cannot fix the planet, it is already together. This might not make very much sense to the power addict who wants to fix it, but anyone who has any recovery experience from addiction knows that this is precisely the path that needs to be taken. This was the reason why we stressed the study of addiction recovery early on in our discourse, because it is the model that works, were as obviously everything else has not worked. So I hope this in some way explains our position a little more clearly. And we’re looking forward to your reply.

“…but population is not a whole system - it’s distributed in uneven ways.,”

On this point also I would like to direct you to our syllabus for the VFU foundation course in Technethics and the illustrations below, that articulate the demystification of these “myths” that are perpetuated by the dis-ease establishment war mongers …:

update 121017

Your reply question below about “the taboos of -ZPG” we have been awaiting and anticipating “THIS” as a primary response, that we see is and actualization in the direction of what we were seeking in terms of participation in our VFU ThinkTank media technethics foundation study process, on the subject of media domination and artificial ignorance …as you know we were hoping to deliver a series of lectures and to answer the questions posed and then synthesize the work into a thesis for publication, as an academic base for a campaign i.e.: documentaries etc.

…you write very well and would that you could make the time to dedicate yourself to

this study more emphatically, now that you have completed your book. So you cannot say you have not been recruited into a techno-heretical action. We could also probably use the glitter of a “PhD” on our book covers, otherwise they may not get published, or get the acceptance in the recognized scholarly print media and the public at large. A work with two authors or better yet a cabal, is much more enjoyable to make, in any case, as there is a feedback loop that drives the opus forward into completion. I for one need that …I have a tendency to slide back into vernacular tweeterisms, without the challenge of peers, although in fact it seems that I have few peers, as it turns out, in our efforts towards de-design and de-schooling.

Even so there are no assurances that anyone will read, or like what they see, as in the recent press for the work of l~s~ who has a PhD that is not quoted and his

associate who does not, as far as I know. It is no mystery to us that books on technethics are repudiated and superseded by the green washed “technoethics” versions, this is the technology of “…marginalization…”. See cc. below*:Re: "Does Technology Make Us Do It?" by Arthur Schafer

In this second letter in answer to the question of taboos ..the first dealing with the demographic disinformation on the reality of our ecological Armageddon…I will touch on the subject of “globalization” v. ”the (true) whole earth movement” the sixties. Although we are indebted to The Whole Earth Catalogue for our logo image of the NASA photo of earth from space of and the caption “We do not need to put, it together it is together” we have held this publication as suspect from day one.

Here is a link that explains the metamorphosis of the “back to nature” movement into the classic propaganda of the “silicon valley” elites on the virtues of “cyberspace” masquerading as resistance :

http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/817415_chap4.html

and more BS from the founder Brand at TED:

http://www.ted.com/talks/stewart_brand_proclaims_4_environmental_heresies.html

…and no mention of population control at al …the “informal economy” is the mainstream economy i.e.: DRUGS, the formula for success in the greed machine is ” …the greater the numbers (population) the greater the misery, the greater the misery (if you are in the drug business) the greater the profits.”

…in short Brand sold out “the (true) whole earth movement and green washed “the counter culture” to opened the way to techno fascist

agendas for globalization 180 degree reversal of the anti-media pacifist resistance movement co-opted by integrationist media monopolies and social engineering i.e.: ” collective feedback” or “group think” or a more sinister slant on “transforming human consciousness” of the “awareness movement” that in fact was exactly predicted in Huxley’s “Brave New World” under the label of “social sites” etc. a vector away from humanistic Gestalt  and in reverse towards an industrial Behaviouralism … Brand even wears a brown shirt like a Hitler youth … for similar thought trends see: http://capitalism creates poverty.blogspot.ca/2011/08/whole earth delusion.html ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐although the Green movement in general would do well to get their facts in order and place minus ZPG as a top priority:

This pharmaceutical / drug cartel disease establishment media monopoly in turn fosters the maintenance of taboos and demographic myths about minus ZPG, like localized demographics that demonstrate that we are in a population decline …in short artificial ignorance (like the new inquisition) is simply just too good for business to be disbanded.

ThinkTank StudyDesk update 120920 RE: The most important element in sustainability RE: Welcome to The Virtual Free University Think Tank - update 12

Population is taboo because it confronts multiple taboos across multiple cultures. For a social liberal to raise the issue invites immediate reprisals of first-world prejudices and anti-lower class stigma.

To admit First Nations are below zero growth is to admit you had a role in genocide. To confront political policy on birth control is to invite religious wrath. Even social scientists will argue against you.

But population is not a whole system - it’s distributed in uneven ways. It is also an effect, so why ruin one’s work arguing with those who will fight you at the level of effects?

You can choose one causal level relationship and hope it works on the effect. You choose addiction - but even addiction is an effect, albeit one only changed by personal choice, so it has causal leverage.

I seem to have chosen education and “social designing.” It also takes a long time, but the effects are long lasting.

*Re: "Does Technology Make Us Do It?" by Arthur Schafer

I was very disappointed in Arthur Schafer’s review of Lawrence E. Schmidt and Scott Marratto’s The End of Ethics in a Technological Society (“Does Technology Make us Do It?” December, 2008). Regrettably, Professor Schafer has critiqued a book that appears to be a phantasm of his own imagination. This constitutes a double loss: the loss of an opportunity for Professor Schafer to provide us with some insight into the arguments that the Schmidt and Marratto book actually makes and the loss of an opportunity for the readers of the LRC to make their own independent and intelligent assessment.

Professor Schafer is of no assistance to the readers because the straw men he sets up are nowhere to be found in the book, leading one to surmise that his review is a mere pretext for advancing his own rather

superficial agenda. The End of Ethics itself raises the more far-reaching concerns of how to assess what constitutes “the good” for man in a post-modern context in which the metaphysical grounds for making that assessment have been eroded. Schafer’s only significant contribution to that discussion is to advocate a socioeconomic critique of modern technological change. But that precisely raises the question of what generally held values are to be used as the touchstone of mankind’s social and economic well-being. It does not assist the task of grounding values in a normative sense of objective good simply to add one more ideological tool to the toolbox. A socioeconomic analysis, unless so grounded, simply devolves into a yet another utilitarian solution that, as the authors show, assumes a tacit, but unexamined and uncritical, ethical framework.

On the bright side, LRC readers have no other remedy, if they really wish to understand the current ethical dilemma, than to read the book itself—the one, that is, the authors actually wrote.
