CTIA Certification Program Test Plan

Section 1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this Test Plan is to define the CTIA Certification Program test requirements for evaluating CDMA Cellular/PCS Mobile Stations in a laboratory environment. This purpose is accomplished via performing the maximum set, supported by commercially available test equipment, of the compliance tests specified in TIA/EIA-98-E, the maximum possible set of signaling conformance tests specified in TIA/EIA-898, TIA-916, TIA-918, TIA-919, TIA-866, selected tests from CDG Reference 35 and CDG Reference 64, and certain criteria extracted from industry experience. These tests are performed against automated commercial test equipment in a laboratory environment. The purpose of these tests is to seek the absolute highest possible level of test coverage under automated, repeatable and fully controllable test conditions. To the maximum extent practical, testing requirements are based upon industry standards referenced in the pertinent sections of this document.

This Test Plan is part of a CTIA Certification Program as described in a separate document entitled CTIA Certification Program Management Document. This document contains criteria, in addition to laboratory conformance tests, that must be met for CTIA Certification.

1.2 Scope

This lab test plan is based on minimum performance tests specified in TIA/EIA-98-E, signaling conformance test cases extracted from TIA/EIA-898, TIA-916, TIA-866, CDG reference 35, performance-based test cases extracted from CDG Reference 64, and on non-standards based industry tests. The specific test set up, test procedures and test parameters are therefore referred back to industry standard specifications, where applicable. Appendices A & B provides the mapping between this Lab Test Plan and for cdmaOne® and for cdma2000® minimum performance and signaling conformance testing.

This Test Plan does not provide specific test equipment configurations or detailed test procedures by which to execute Certification testing. Such documentation and procedures must be presented by the CTIA Authorized Testing Laboratory (CATL) as part of the CATL authorization process and subsequently maintained and employed by the CATL to remain authorized to conduct Certification testing.

This Test Plan does not include the test requirements or test methodology for other Mobile Station standards or technologies (e.g., AMPS, GSM, TDMA). Aspects of multiple CTIA Test Plans are merged in those cases where a product supports a blend of multiple technologies.

1.4 Test Overview

This Test Plan presents general requirements for the test environment (equipment configurations, procedures, uncertainty analyses, results reporting), minimum performance testing, cabled interoperability testing, and system performance testing of Mobile Stations incorporating CDMA technologies.

All testing shall be conducted as described in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document (see Laboratory Test Procedures section).

Tests are to be conducted only if the corresponding features are supported by the mobile station. The manufacturer shall provide to the CATL a list of features supported by the mobile station.

The test matrices in Appendix A – cdmaOne Test Matrices and Appendix B – cdma2000 Test Matrices provide a roadmap of when the tests are required. The first column (Test Required) indicates tests required today. The second column (Required in Next Revision) indicates additional tests that will be required in the next revision of this test plan. The third column (Required in Future Revision) indicates additional tests that are planned to be required in a future revision of this Test Plan. If there are tests marked in the “Required in Next Revision” column, the next revision of this Test Plan will be published 90 days after the current revision.

Test failures shall be handled as described in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document (see Test Failures section).

The test report shall include the minimum information as described in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document (see Laboratory Reporting section).

1.4.1. Special Results Reporting

Traffic, Paging, and Pilot Channel gain settings shall be verified prior to executing any tests using a code domain analyzer. Measured numbers shall be stated in the test report next to the base station settings.

1.5 Test Process

All testing shall be conducted at a CTIA Authorized Testing Laboratory (CATL). A current list of CATLs can be found at www.certification.wow-com.com. Products shall be submitted for testing in accordance with the instructions detailed in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document. Testing to this test plan may follow either a one-part test process or a two-part test process as described below.

April 2004 4 Revision 4.0

Page 9: Ctia Cdma Test Plan Rev 4.0

CTIA Certification Program Test Plan

1.5.1. One-Part Test Process

In the one-part test process, all tests identified as required in this Test Plan must be completed and the results reported as described in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document (see Laboratory Reporting section). The CATL will upload the test report to CTIA’s online certification database as described in the CTIA Certification Program Management Document.

1.5.2. Two-Part Test Process

In the two-part test process, Safe-For-Network tests are conducted first. These tests are identified by “SFN” in the test matrices in this Test Plan. Safe For Network tests shall be conducted on the same hardware version as the units to be used on the network and should be the same physical devices. The results are reported in the format as shown in Appendix C – Safe-For-Network Test Report Format and uploaded to CTIA’s online certification database by the CATL. At a later time, all tests identified as required in this Test Plan are conducted and those results uploaded to CTIA’s online certification database by the CATL.

The purpose of this two-part process is to allow the product manufacturer to obtain access to an operator’s network at the earliest opportunity possible, by demonstrating that the mobile station will not adversely impact network performance. The operator will review the Safe-For-Network test results and, if the results meet the operator’s requirements, provide access to the network to support development testing. Once development testing is complete, and the manufacturer is ready to complete the certification testing process, the entire set of required tests in this Test Plan may be conducted.

1.5.2.1. Channel Requirements

The CATL shall contact the operator in the product’s target market to determine the channels used during Safe For Network certification testing. Unless otherwise specified by the operator, the Mobile Station or Access Terminal shall be tested using channels 384, 777, and 1013 for the 800 MHz band, and 25, 600, and 1175 for PCS operation. Products not capable of supporting the specified “test” channels shall be identified prior to the start of testing. Alternative test channels may be used but they shall fall as closely as possible to the default channels defined.

1.6 EUT - Equipment Under Test (Mobile Station)

In accordance with the CTIA Certification Program Management Document, units for test are to be supplied with all required peripherals and accessories. In addition, any auxiliary equipment which is available as part of the product, either for installation or as an option, should be supplied.
