ADMINSTRATIVE SERVICES & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT-Beau Falgout, Interim City Manager

Communications & Marketing This week our team was focused on the marketing for Palm Coast Connect. Video production is in progress for the promo and design is in progress for the Palm Coast Connect ads, postcard, and fliers. The social media campaign is also being drafted as well as a special tutorial video for two of our social platforms – Facebook and Instagram. The number of articles in the Information Center surpassed 70 this week as the team continues to add our residents’ most commonly asked questions. An e-blast is being developed showcasing Palm Coast Connect to residents who subscribe to the City email list. With the recent exciting announcement of Palm Coast Connect now available, the City has received media coverage on its launch and benefits to citizens and the City. The Daytona Beach News-Journal, the Palm Coast Observer, and Flagler Live all wrote articles which can be accessed at the following links: NJ – https://www.news-journalonline.com/news/20190607/new-app-connects-palm-coast-residents-with-city-hall Observer – https://www.palmcoastobserver.com/article/city-launches-new-customer-service-website-and-app Flagler Live - https://flaglerlive.com/137708/palm-coast-connect/ Additionally, the City also received media coverage from the Palm Coast Observer and the Daytona Beach News-Journal featuring the Portugal Day Flag-Raising Ceremony that was held Friday, June 7. Those stories can be viewed at the following links: NJ: https://www.news-journalonline.com/news/20190610/palm-coast-marks-portugal-day-with-flag-raising-ceremony?template=ampart Observer: https://www.palmcoastobserver.com/photo-gallery/portugal-day-celebrated-with-flag-raising-at-palm-coast-city-hall

Our team also sent out five news releases this week on several events and activities happening this month and throughout July with Parks and Recreation. We also released information on the Fireworks in the Park event which is going to be different this year in that both the patriotic ceremony and fireworks are combined to be held at the same event, on the same night, July 3. We also announced that 17 interns have joined the City this summer to further their education and acquire real-life skills in the careers they are working toward. The social media post of the week focused on hurricane prep. At the beginning of June, the official start of the hurricane season, a social media campaign kicked off with a post every day throughout the month with a tip, fact, or helpful piece of information to prepare for the season. The post of the week showed citizens on the NOAA website how to see the paths of storms that have crossed Palm Coast and other communities. The post reached 3,732 people, with 32 reactions, 23 comments, and 12 shares.

Environment Team at Work

Environmental staff on June 11th carried out a site visit to a conservation easement located near Indian Trails Sports Complex. While there, the staff engaged in monitoring activities in association with a new mitigation plan to improve the quality of the wetland property. The benefits of this plan will provide community structure and habitat support for our area’s endangered and threatened wildlife while also providing a high-quality wetland in association with the Army Corp. of Engineers and St. Johns River Management District standards.

Afternoon summer thunderstorms have begun bringing much needed rain, but many unwanted lightning strikes. Crews experienced storm related call volume on Sunday. Volunteer Interns Brandon O’Hara & Mallory Cobb are working hard toward completing their firefighting training. The Palm Coast Fire Department partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia to read to students at Palm Coast Community Child Care.

The Palm Coast Fire Department launched its official Facebook Page. You can visit the page at www.facebook.com/palmcoastfire for more photos and updates on the department’s activities.

Tip of the Month: Lightning Safety – Florida residents are familiar with why our State is considered the lightning capital of the nation: the afternoon thunderstorm. Tall cumulus, dark clouds may be one of the first signs of a developing thunderstorm. Be aware of thunderstorm watches and warnings issued for your area. Lightning, which can strike as far as 10 miles away, is about the distance you can hear thunder. A Day at the Fire Station

The Palm Coast Fire Department enjoyed visiting the Palm Coast Community Child Center (pc4) to read “A Day at the Fire Station” by Richard Scarry. The books were supplied in partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia.

Stormy Weather

Florida is known for being the Lightning Capital of the world. When afternoon storms roll in, there is an increase of lightning strikes. When storms rolled in on Sunday, we responded to multiple lightning strikes including to Walgreens. Fortunately, there was minimal damage and minimal interruption of services.

Station Logos

The Palm Coast Fire Department is excited to release our new station logos! These logos were designed by the crews to capture the quintessential essence of their station. These logos will be affixed to the rear of the apparatus and soon station t-shirts. This week we are proud to present to you – Station 24- The Harbor House!

Parks & Recreation – Lauren Johnston, Interim Director

After the rainy weather and thunderstorms we have been receiving, we were finally able to host our first mermaid class. Participants practiced certain mermaid swimming techniques without the tail first. Then they started getting comfortable with wearing their mermaid tail and swimming in it.

Teen Adventure Camp started this week! We are thrilled to have over 30 teens going on adventures with us. This week they went to Skyzone Trampoline Park, Adventure Landing, Paintball Adventures, Daytona Ice Arena, and Blue Spring State Park.

The Tennis Center court resurfacing, being completed by Welch Tennis Courts, Inc., completed this week. Eight out of the ten courts were resurfaced. The courts need to settle a little, so court availability will be limited through June 25. Check out the pictures and updates at www.facebook.com/palmcoasttenniscenter.

During my 35 year career in animal welfare I have adopted many, many pets. I’ve always told friends, colleagues and customers how much I loved adopting older dogs. You know their personality type, they are already house trained, and they don’t chew things anymore. For years I’ve proclaimed “I’ll never get a puppy again, I’m too old to deal with all the puppy behavior.”

Well, all that talk went out the window three months ago when FHS received a litter of seven tiny pitbull puppies. They were skinny, sickly, wormy orphans, too small to be away from Momma. They had been neglected. Our foster coordinator quickly found foster homes for five of them. I volunteered to foster the last two. Anytime you foster a sickly animal (and I’m sure other foster families would agree with me on this) you become very bonded as you dutifully nurture and medicate them to bring them back to health.

The babies that I had at home were quickly accepted by our pack. My husband also fell in love with them instantly. So I became what we jokingly call a foster failure; a foster parent who fails to bring the animals back, but adopts them instead.

Lilly Lou Pickles and Felicia are now part of our household. As I watch the two play together, snuggle together, learn together and grow together. I see how happy they are to be a pair. I’ve heard people say that if you adopt two animals together they won’t bond as much with their humans. That’s hooey. These girls are still very much bonded with my husband and I, but they have each other. When we’re at work all day, I know that they are content and playing together. As far as the effort, it’s really no more labor intensive to house train two, to feed two. The joy is however is tenfold. We have had so many laughs watching these two chase and roll each other around the yard. Palm trees are their obstacle course, the older dogs are their teachers. Knock on wood, since they have each other to play with, I haven’t lost one shoe yet!

If you’re considering bringing a puppy or kitten into your household, take two, they’re small!

Flagler Humane Society and many shelters regularly offer BOGO - Buy (Adopt) One, Get One or sibling kittens and puppies. So how can you say no?

NEWS RELEASE- City of Palm Coast Contact: Daniel Calderon, Communications & Marketing Intern 386-986-3702 June 11, 2019 City of Palm Coast welcomes 17 college interns for summer internship program Palm Coast – School may be out, but for 17 college students, the work doesn’t stop! The City of Palm Coast has welcomed 17 interns for the 2019 summer internship program. Interns are working on special projects designed to meet the current needs within City departments and are learning and practicing skills within their field of study. The students are supervised by professionals who are guiding and mentoring them. The internship program allows college students who grew up in Palm Coast and the surrounding community to get professional experience while at home during summer break. The paid internships are full-time and may qualify for college credit with the student’s respective college. “We are excited to welcome our interns this summer,” said Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland. “Our internship program gives local college students a chance to obtain hands-on experience in their career fields while also helping the City with special projects and our new initiatives in innovation and technology.” This summer’s interns are: Daniel Calderon, Taylor Campo, Christopher Caschera, Sophia Clark, Samuel Colasanti, Alexandra Feldman, Anabella Giuliano, Jonathan Hale, Danevsky Joseph, Andres Lebron, Jessica Middleton, Taylor Pettine, Shawn Proctor, Erin Robinson, Jacob Roth, Brianna Valente and Rath Yoeum. Students who attend public and private colleges and universities throughout Florida – and even one in Georgia – were among the select few chosen for internships in innovation and economic growth, parks and recreation, finance, planning, fire, information technology, GIS, administration, communications and marketing, stormwater engineering and utility engineering. “The experience is going to be valuable, and I think it is really interesting to see how the city I grew up in is operated from a governmental perspective,” said Jessica Middleton, who also interned with the City last summer. “When I was given the chance to return this year, I thought it would be a good opportunity to expand on the professional skills that I developed last summer.”

Middleton, a Florida State University political science major and graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School, is working on improving workforce talent recruitment this summer as an intern in the Administrative Services and Economic Development Department. Internships at the City have also led to full-time employment opportunities. Safety Specialist Benjamin Caoili interned in the summer of 2018 and now works at City Hall as a full-time employee. “My time as an intern was invaluable to learning the complex nature of what my job as a full-time employee would consist of,” Caoili said. “I treated the internship as if it was a real job, and I was given the ability to be creative. I immersed myself completely in the internship.” In addition to working on projects within their respective departments, interns meet with the Assistant City Manager weekly to discuss their progress, as well as share insight they have gained about the City. For more information, contact Cindi Lane, Communications & Marketing Manager, at [email protected] and 386-986-3708.
