City of Palm Coast ‘Water Buoys’ team places 2nd in Top Ops national competition
Palm Coast, Florida – The City of Palm Coast’s “Water Buoys” team placed second among the nation’s top teams at the Top Ops National Championship of the American Water Works Association. The Palm Coast Utility Department’s team of Fred Greiner, Tom Martens, Peter Roussell and Jim Hogan (coach) fell short of repeating last year’s national championship by just two points. This year’s winner was the “Birmingham Prime Movers” team from Alabama, and a team from the City of Deltona’s water system placed third. The competition between 19 teams from across the United States and Canada took place at the AWWA Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) in Las Vegas. “It is such an honor for us to represent the Florida Section (of AWWA) and the City of Palm Coast in the national contest,” said Team Coach Jim Hogan, Palm Coast Utility Systems Manager of Water Operation. “The Water Buoys have won seven national championships, and we were hoping to repeat this year. Still, I’m so proud of the team. They exemplify our entire Utility Department’s efforts to provide excellence in water and wastewater services to the City of Palm Coast.” The second-place win was bittersweet for Hogan, who retired from the City on Friday, a day after the finals. Hogan worked for the Utility Department for 38 years, beginning as an operator trainee in 1980 and moving up the ranks to become Manager of Water Operations in 1999. Top Ops is done brain-bowl style, with water treatment teams from across the U.S. and Canada, answering questions in a Q&A contest. Questions in the competition cover a broad range of operational topics including basic science, chemistry, hydrology, water distribution, public health and sanitation, plant maintenance, safety and process control. The annual contest recognizes and promotes excellence in all aspects of water operations, giving operators the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and talents. The Palm Coast team won the state championship in April for the 12th time in the past 14 years. In addition, the Water Buoys have placed in every national-level competition they’ve entered
since the team started in 2005 – seven first-place victories, five second-places, and one third-place. The Florida Section of the AWWA awards expense-paid trips to the winners of the state competition, so no City funds are used toward the competition. Team members pay for the competition out of their own pockets and then receive financial reimbursement from the Florida Section. The opportunity to attend the conference, and even practice for the competition, has a major pay-off for the City, Hogan said. “The educational aspects of Top Ops cannot be understated,” Hogan said. “The Water Buoys study relevant technical manuals and practice for the competition all year long. The team members then impart their knowledge to the operational staff in regularly scheduled, in-house training sessions.” For more information, please contact Jason Giraulo, Digital Communications Coordinator, at [email protected] and 386-986-2484.

It’s beach time! It’s that time of year where we hit the beach and bring along our four legged furry friends for all the fun. But be aware of the dangers that the beach can cause for your pet. Don’t allow your pet to eat anything from the beach/ocean. This includes dead marine animals or even the sand. Sand can become impacted in the stomach and cause blockages. Letting your dog drink the salt water is also a big no no. The water holds parasites, bacteria and salt. Don’t assume that your dog can swim. Even the strongest canine swimmers can be caught in a rip current. Of course there is always the danger of extreme temperatures. Hot temperatures can cause heat exhaustion, sunburn in short haired breeds, and burns to the dog’s pads. Be aware of the heat and if your furry companions looks too hot – get them out of the sum immediately. Extreme heat can be fatal to our canine family members. Donation Opportunities: The Flagler Humane Society Thrift Store always accepts donations. They cannot take in any computers/printers or large appliances. Call 386-597-2839 and leave a message. Call for our new store location where we will soon be collecting donations. “General Donations” can be dropped off anytime at your convenience. FHS appreciates all donations, especially those from our Wish List (available at flaglerhumanesociety.org/wish-list). You can also purchase items via the Amazon.com link on the FHS website and ship them directly to the shelter.
