This week the City celebrated the

grand opening and ribbon cutting of

the new Wastewater Treatment Plant

2. Mayor Holland welcomed nearly a

hundred residents, local officials, the

builder, the engineer and staff at this

commemorative event. Tours were

given by plant staff to those in

attendance. The new Advanced

Wastewater Treatment facility

produces an effluent quality that

nearly meets drinking water

standards, however this highly treated

effluent is used for irrigation and

groundwater recharge for our

community. For more information,

City Council Appoints Vincent Lyon to Palm Coast City Council Seat 4:

The City welcomes our newest City Council Member, Mr. Vincent Lyon, who was appointed this week to the recently vacated Seat 4. Council Member Lyon is a local attorney and 5 ½ year resident of Palm Coast. Council Member Lyon will serve until November 2018. For more information, see the attached News Release. WEEKLY INTERN SPOTLIGHT: (Tune in each week for a focus on the City’s new Summer Interns!) Admin/Lead Intern, Maeve Dineen: Maeve is the Administrative Services & Economic Development (ASED) Intern. This is the third summer Maeve has worked for the City, and she is the Lead intern for the group. Maeve is a local from Palm Coast and a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School. More recently, in 2017, Maeve graduated from Mercer University in Georgia with a degree in Bio Chemistry and Molecular Biology. She continued her work for the City since last summer, working on projects for the Finance Department and is finalizing process revisions for the ASED Department. Maeve has enjoyed her time working as an intern here at the City of Palm Coast and is looking forward to going to law school in the fall and attending Case Western Reserve University as she studies Intellectual Property Law.

WEEKLY INTERN SPOTLIGHT (continued): Construction Management & Engineering Intern, Jonathon Clarke: Jonathon is our Utility Intern, working in the Construction Management & Engineering (CM&E) Division of the Community Development Department. He is originally from Niagara Falls, Canada and a 2016 graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School. Jonathon is working closely with CM&E engineers, studying the effects that thunderstorms and hurricanes have on the City’s sewer system. Jonathon currently attends Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and he’ll begin his 3rd year of undergrad in the fall, majoring in Civil Engineering.

Communications & Marketing This week Palm Coast Television released two videos that look back at the 1998 wildfires in Palm Coast and across Florida.

"Further from the Ashes," produced to mark the 20th anniversary of the wildfires that deeply affected our community, can be

viewed on YouTube at the following links: https://youtu.be/1vLYVDIr1cA and https://youtu.be/unwvh2Rnrz0. The City

Council and our citizens enjoyed seeing the video at Tuesday’s Council meeting, where firefighters and volunteers who worked

the ’98 wildfires were recognized. Thank you to the Palm Coast Fire Department and several residents for assisting us with

this project.

The Division also coordinated the Grand Opening for the Wastewater Treatment Plant 2, and prepared for Friday night’s

Portugal Day flag-raising. We staffed the Council meeting on Tuesday, and then sent a news release about the Council’s

appointment of Vincent T. Lyon to the vacant District 4 seat on City Council. Other news releases distributed this week

include road closures, summer activities for adults and seniors, and Food Truck Tuesdays (June 19 event).

The Brand Plus Team met this week and heard a presentation from intern Nicole Brownrigg on plans for the Rooted in Nature

campaign over the next few months. The team also discussed adding way-finding signage for Waterfront Park and new park

signage.

We staffed the Citizen’s Academy session at Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 and graduation and also posted to Facebook,

Instagram and Twitter. The staff judged two categories for the NATOA Government Programming Awards. Graphic design

included the Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup mascot, materials for the opening of Wastewater Treatment Plant 2, a flier for

the Pink Army 5K, and a graphic for Fireworks in the Park. The 2018 Find Your Florida Photo Contest wrapped up May 31,

and we are now preparing for the judging.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES Flagler Palm Coast High School students have completed 73 hours in Ride Alongs for the week. Station 25 hosted a 2-day Fire-Programs training class this week. We had participants from Delaware and Georgia join us. This training is geared to prepare the department for system conversion in October 2018. Three members of the department are attending the International Association of Firefighters Peer Fitness Training this week in St. Petersburg to enhance the FF Wellness Initiative underway. The Volunteer Associates assisted the City with Hydration Stations for both the opening of Waste Water Treatment Plant 2 and Portugal Day this week.

Our most exciting news is that Fun in the Sun Summer Camp started! We are happy to welcome it back to

the Community Center. With the added facility space, we could expand our numbers. We also welcomed

back grades 6-8. This week campers enjoyed a pool day at Frieda Zamba, a field trip to Sky Zone, and

cooking classes. They also got horseshoes lessons from the Flagler County Horseshoe Pitching Club.

Our Tennis Pro attended the annual USPTA Florida Division Convention in Orlando. He was able to

attend continuing education seminars and professional networking events.

Our Adult Basketball League kicked off on June 4 and will run through July. We had a great crowd

cheering on our teams this first week. We also started up our Nature/Fitness Walks again for the summer.

These walks will explore Linear Park/St. Joe Walkway. The shaded trail will help us to beat the summer

heat.

The average water demand for the week was 6.928 million gallons per day.

The average wastewater flow for the week was 9.380 million gallons per day.

Crews installed 12 new water meters, 1 new PEP tank and replaced 2 PEP tanks.

Contractors installed 4 new PEP tanks and replaced 2.

There are 25 new PEP tanks pending and 22 PEP tank replacements pending. Currently all new tanks are being installed within 3 days of site ready.

There are 245 new meter installations pending, with 50 cleared and an average installation time of 3 weeks.

Wastewater crews installed 5 risers, replaced 33 PEP pumps, 18 floats and 10 cleanout caps. Repaired 1 service lateral and 1 gravity main.

There were 41 calls after hours.

Water Distribution crews repaired 1 water service line, 6 manifolds, completed 11 meter pit adjustments/replacements and replaced 4 water service lines. Tested and repaired 176 backflow preventers.

Wastewater crews inspected via CCTV 200 feet of gravity sewer and 1 manhole.

On Saturday June 6th, crews repaired a broken 8” water main on Matanzas Woods Parkway. Water service to 85 homes was interrupted from 5AM to 9AM.

On June 5th, Water Treatment Plant 3 scheduled a plant shutdown while staff replaced worn bearings on the permeate blower.

Palm Coast celebrated a ribbon-

cutting ceremony for the grand

opening of the new Wastewater

Treatment Plant 2.

The plant opening adds 2 million

gallons per day capacity to the

wastewater system, which is

needed to accommodate growth.

Currently, Wastewater Treatment

Plant 2 is treating nearly 1 million

gallons per day.

Wastewater Treatment Plant 2 is

located west of U.S. 1 in

northwestern Palm Coast, on

30.23 acres. It is located on the

same site as Water Treatment

Plant 3. The new wastewater plant

cost close to $30 million and was

financed with a very-low-interest

loan from FDEP. It was designed

by CPH Engineers and built by PC

Construction.

Vincent T. Lyon appointed to Palm Coast City Council Seat 4, sworn in Tuesday Palm Coast – Palm Coast resident Vincent T. Lyon, a guardianship and probate litigation attorney with the Chiumento Dwyer Hertel Grant and Kistemaker law firm, was appointed Tuesday to complete Steve Nobile’s term of office for the Palm Coast City Council District 4 seat. Lyon was sworn in Tuesday evening, just after the Palm Coast City Council selected him to serve as their fellow new Council member. He will serve until November, when a newly elected Council Member will take office for a four-year term. The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 28, and the general election will be Nov. 6. After the vote Tuesday, Lyon thanked the Council for their confidence in him. “I hope to live up to the expectations and the high goals that the City has,” he said. Lyon has been a resident of Palm Coast for 5½ years and is active in business and trade groups and charitable organizations including the Rotary Club of Flagler County (current director and chair of the By-laws Committee), Flagler County Bar Association (past president), Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, Community Cats of Palm Coast, Inns of Court, and the Estate Planning Council of the Fun Coast. He is a graduate of the City of Palm Coast’s Citizen’s Academy. Lyon earned his juris doctor from The George Washington University Law School after receiving his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a master’s from the University of Central Oklahoma. Dance into new Parks & Recreation dancing lessons, other adult/senior activities!

Palm Coast – Dance into summer with a variety of dance lessons and other fun activities for adult and senior residents at the Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE!

Looking to try something new? Join us this summer for Palm Coast Parks & Recreation’s new Line Dancing lessons for adults starting Monday, June 18. No experience is necessary. If you’d like to give ballroom dancing a try, don’t just sit and watch Dancing with the Stars – be part of the action! Wood Carvers – Tuesdays, 1-4 p.m. The art of wood carving has a history that spans centuries. At its core, wood carving transforms a piece of wood into a masterfully crafted work of art. This program is open to men and women of all levels and abilities. Participants must bring their own materials.

Pinochle – Tuesdays, 1-4 p.m. Pinochle is a trick-taking card game typically for two to four players and played with a 48-card deck. Derived from the card game bezique, players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds.

Open Art Studio – Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-noon. Need a space to create your next work of art? Stop by the Community Center for some creative time. Please bring your own materials.

Mah Jongg – Wednesdays, 1-4 p.m. Mah Jongg is a game that originated in China. Join in on this game of skill, strategy, and calculation and make new friends.

Game Day Social – Thursdays, 12:30-4 p.m. Game Day Social is comprised of a lively, spirited group of individuals who enjoy the camaraderie and competition of dominos, a variety of card games or board games. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite game or play one provided by the Parks & Recreation Department. Light refreshments are served.

Duo group ‘Gailforce’ to perform at June 19 Food Truck Tuesday in Palm Coast

Palm Coast – Bring out your friends and family for some summertime Food Truck Tuesday fun on June 19 - featuring a variety of food trucks and entertainment by Gailforce. The event will be 5-8 p.m. along Park Street next to Central Park in Town Center. The address of Central Park is 975 Central Ave., Palm Coast. This month’s beneficiary is the Palm Coast Arts Foundation, which will offer a children’s crafts table for kids to create and take home crafts.

A top duo group, Gailforce, will provide free, live entertainment for the night! Gailforce uses their vocals, an acoustic guitar and a flute to perform originals and cover tunes over a range of genres including Country, Rock, Southern Rock, Blues, Folk and Pop. Each Food Truck Tuesday, presented by the City of Palm Coast, features free entertainment and a variety of food trucks – mobile kitchens, canteens and catering trucks that offer up gourmet foods including appetizers, main dishes, side dishes and desserts. Many menus are kid-friendly. The food trucks signed up for June include: Cool Beans BBQ and Catering, It’s All Greek To Me, Lee's Famous Cheesesteaks, Monsta Lobsta, Ramon's Personal Chef, Surf N Soul Grill, The Big Cheese, The London Fish & Chippy, Wingin’ It, Woodson’s Wrap Shack, Brusters, Kona Ice, and Tiki T's. Volunteering is a rewarding way to help homeless animals in this county. The Flagler Humane Society is always in need of loyal volunteers. We are always in need of people to walk dogs, clean cages, or help with paperwork. There are jobs that can be done at the shelter or at your home if you can’t make it to the shelter. We also have a thrift store that is in need of stockers and people to sort/price. If you can’t own a pet at this time and just want to get an animal fix – we can use you! We hold volunteer orientations every second Saturday of each month at noon in the education room at FHS. If you are interested in dog walking – stay for the orientation following the regular volunteer orientation. They cannot take in any computers/printers or large appliances. Call 386-597-2839 and leave a message. We are collecting shoes again! Bring your used shoes (any condition) to us to turn in for money! “General Donations” can be dropped off anytime at your convenience. FHS appreciates all donations, especially those from our Wish List (available at flaglerhumanesociety.org/wish-list). You can also purchase items via the Amazon.com link on the FHS website and ship them directly to the shelter. Minnow is approximately 2 years old and is a sweet lab/terrier mix. He is already neutered, microchipped, and

vaccinated – all ready to go!! He knows basic commands and has been good with other dogs. He does like to dig so he would not be able to be
