“THE LORD WILL OPEN TO THEM THE GATE OF PARADISE, AND THEY WILL RETURN TO THAT HOMELAND WHERE

THERE IS NO DEATH, BUT ONLY LASTING JOY” Entrance Antiphon, Mass of the Dead

November is a time to remember those people in our lives who have passed on to live fully in God’s presence. At the entrances to the church are baskets of Autumn leaves. Please write the name of your loved one on a leaf and place it in the basket. These names will be placed at the foot of the Altar during Mass and we as a parish family will pray for them knowing that with God there is mercy and fullness of redemption.

An Advent Retreat for Busy People

Matthew Kelly, one of America’s bestselling Catholic authors, along with other leading Catholic voices of our time, can take you on a life-changing journey this year during this sometimes hectic, yet holy season of Advent. Even during your busiest times, you can take part in daily inspirational emails with short videos, words of encouragement, and coach-ing. Will this be your best Advent ever? That is entirely up to you. Advent, at its heart, is about getting ready to encounter Jesus at Christmas. Opening your heart to him. Getting to know him. Becoming a better husband or wife, father or moth-er, son or daughter, friend, and the like. This spiritual program is a tool to help you do just that. Beginning on the first Sunday of Advent (November 29) and continuing every day through December 23, you can re-ceive short and powerful messages that will help you encoun-ter God’s incredible mercy. As an ideal response to Pope Fran-cis’ invitation to celebrate the Year of Mercy, these simple spiritual disciplines can transform your life, relationships, work, and ability to genuinely embrace and experience life. Don’t miss the opportunity to make this your best Advent ever. The only cost is your commitment to live better each day this Advent. Are you ready? Sign up today by logging onto BestAdventEver.com.

BAZAAR ON BROADWAY A HUGE SUCCESS!

Heartfelt thanks to all who participated or helped in any way for our 8th Annual Bazaar on Broadway. Your dedica-tion and love for St. Mary is loud and clear. We grossed a record amount and will report our final profit once all the bills have been paid. There will be an important Wrap-Up Meeting on Monday, December 7 at 7pm in the workshop. We always have room for improvement and this is an important part of plan-ning for next year. Becoming a "Shared Pastor Community"

As part of an ongoing cycle of interviews with "shared pas-tors", the Pastoral Council's Subcommittee on Planning found certain commonalities that are worth noting. These points are important as they alert us to factors about what we can reasona-bly anticipate as we go forward with this expected transition in our parish:

As parishioners at St. Mary, we should probably not expect input into the process of determining which other parish we will be affiliated with. This decision is made at the diocesan level.

The personality and leadership skills of the shared pastor are critical and all the parishioners involved have to be open to change, being flexible and reasonable. This attitude will, in turn, mirror the urgency we feel that we want to preserve our respective spiritual homes with a leader who is also pastoral, communicative, and understanding.

Planning for transition (as we are doing at St. Mary) is im-portant for the success of the shared pastor model.

Immediate decisions about rectory use and staffing will have to be made based on practical issues (condition of buildings, needs of both parishes, and the like).

A real problem is that the shared pastor cannot be every-where that parishioners might expect him to be. It is just not a physical reality. Therefore, daily and weekly Mass sched-ules and holiday celebrations will probably be changed by necessity.

Existing church councils (Finance, Stewardship, Pastoral) generally continue to function as separate entities after the parishes are joined in this model.

The number of bulletins and websites that remain are unique to the affiliation of the parishes involved.

One shared pastor cited that we all have to maintain a good sense of humor during the process of change and after it has taken place.

Be sensitive knowing that some battles are not worth fighting; keep the possibility of dialogue open.

As a faith community at St. Mary, we need to maintain our identity regardless of whom we are partnered with. The church is a building that has memories for people; as such, it is important to be sensitive to that fact during a time of change.

Empower the people of St. Mary to take a role in a valuable cause: Serve the poor.

The Church of St. Mary will thrive -- We are one family ... We are the Church ... The Lord wants to do good work here!
