DAROO AWARDS 2013

As a tribute to the men of Anzac, the Canowindra Soldier's Memorial Hospital was established. At a public meeting on 1st August 1919 it was decided to erect a Public Hospital in Canowindra as a memorial to the men of the district who had served in the First World War. A committee was formed and the site chosen on the slopes of Blue-jacket Hill. The Hospital opened in June 1922 and about half the cost of the hospital and furnishings had been raised by the residents of Canowindra and district. It is interesting to note that the RSL Sub-Branch only recently presented Canowindra Soldier's Memorial Hospital with four poly cotton pressure relief overlays at an approximate cost of $1,000. Another connection to Anzac in the District was the establishment after World War 1 and 2 of Soldier Settlements. These areas were available by ballot, to rehabilitate returning soldiers onto small farms which they were able to pay off over a period of time, providing they fulfilled all the stringent requirements of fencing, stocking, etc. Many failed to do this and these areas were purchased by the remaining soldier settlers. My father was one of these original soldier settlers. The third memorial to the men of our district is where we stand here today. We are in a living memorial to those who served in World War 2 as this Memorial Park was established in 1947 in remembrance of the men and women from Canowindra who served in that war. 28 did not return. We in Canowindra seem so remote from the rest of the world it's hard to imagine we have ever been under direct threat. However we need to remember that during World War 2, Darwin was attacked and we also had Japanese mini-submarines in Sydney Harbour. In those days the threat of invitation was very real and in fact, so serious trenches were dug at North Bangaroo School for the protection of children. It's easy to become complacent in our peaceful little world at Canowindra, but we need to be mindful that we may be threatened again sometime in the future, and we need to remember that in the 1914-18 war alone, 61,919 Australians lost their lives so that we may have our freedom. As we stand here today in these newly land-scaped and peaceful surroundings, on this 94th Anzac Day, let us quietly remember the sacrifices of all these men an women from our town and district who served their country for our freedom. Lest we forget." David Cullane, Thursday 25th April 2013 Canowindra RSL Sub-branch

ANZAC DAY 2013 Apologies for the delay in publishing the fol-lowing due to The Phoenix not being printed for the weeks prior to and after Anzac Day. This is the transcript of the speech given by David Cullane of the Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch at the Anzac Day ceremony this year for those, like the writer, who missed it: "The residents of Canowindra and district can be very proud of their record of service to Australia, and indeed the world. During times of unrest and war we have always been ready to defend our country and assist our allies. In doing so many of our volunteers paid the su-preme sacrifice, and didn't return, and we pay tribute to all of them today. Anzac Day, the 25th April commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. About 20,000 soldiers, all volunteers, landed on the beach over the next two days. Thousands of men died in the hours and days that followed and six months later, by the time of the evacuation, 8,141 had been killed or died of wounds, and more than 18,000 had been wounded. This then was what was responsible for the Anzac Tradition. Those men had built a tradition of sticking together, or caring for their mates in the face of overwhelming odds and of endurance amongst death and despair. After Gallipoli the soldiers were sent to France fighting at the many famous battles of the Somme, Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Menin Gate, Paschendale and many others. Australian soldiers also served in the Middle East in Palestine and Syria. Of the 331,781 Australians who embarked for service, 247 were from Canowindra. 61 never came home. As we look at the Anzac Tradition continuing with the outbreak of World War II in 1939, we find that Canowindra again answered the call and 435 men and women serviced in WW2 areas of New Guinea, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, the Pacific, the Mediterranean, Burma and Singapore and even on our own shores when Darwin was attacked, and also during the break out at the prisoner of war camp at Cowra. These men of the 2nd AIF carried on the established Anzac Tradition. We have only to remember the Burma railway. Some of us here today will remember the return of some of our men after their imprisonment in POW camps overseas. In later conflicts from 1950 until the present time, Canowindra men again served in Korea, Maya, Vietnam, and in peacekeeping forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and other areas of conflict throughout the world. In Canowindra we can look at several ongoing memorials to our soldiers.
