The co-operating Anglican Church Parish of Canowindra, & Uniting Church linked congregations of Canowindra, Cranbury & Cudal collect used stamps for fundraising. You are asked to leave a good centimetre or so of the envelope around the actual stamp when you tear or cut it off, so that the stamp is not damaged. Stamps can be left at the Food Basket in the Uniting Church Hall Friday mornings between 9:30am & 12noon, or drop them into the Phoenix office in the Star Building. Talking: (writing?) about the Food Basket, last Friday was a very busy day for the volunteers with one of the most well attended 'shops' of the year. One shy of 50 people registered to obtain packaged, tinned & non food items. The volunteers were very excited that the project is proving to be so successful, especially around this time of year. Those of you who hold a Health Care or Pension Card can call into the Uniting Church Hall from 9:30am until 12noon, register for free, ask the friendly volunteers questions to find out how it all works, perhaps share a cuppa & stock up with some quality goodies. There are FREE hampers at Christmas time, as well as toys for children of Primary School age or younger. The focus of the afternoon is on enjoying the company of your neighbours, catching up with friends and meeting new ones. Everyone is busy during the year, and this is the time for you to be spoilt by the wonderful people from Vinnie’s. Activities during the afternoon include: novelty races for the kids, play dough and colouring for the little ones, a trout smoking demonstration and tastings for the bigger ones, and a reprieve from entertaining kids in a safe environment for mums, dads and carers. What started out as a facebook group, Crime in Canowindra, it is now snowballing through the community to encompass evaluating remote camera security use, engraving valuable items, and a public Home Security presentation by local police being organised. The presentation was to be held at the HACC Offices, however preliminary feed- back has been so positive that the venue has changed to the Community Hall at the Services Club Monday 10 December commencing at 10am. Initially aimed at the older members of our community, responses have been received from a range of ages and groups so the presentation, focussed on maximising security, and minimising your home, person and possessions from being a target, is open to all who feel it would be of benefit. If you are interested in attending the presentation by Senior Constable Greg Treavors from Canobolas LAC, please contact Sarah Bellach from HACC by calling 6344 1199. TWO CENTURIES IN BOOKS During the course of an afternoon recently, Virginia Cullane from the Bookshop, was transported across two centuries. Knowing of Virginia's passion for collecting early Australian children's literature, Philippa Poole, granddaughter of Ethel Turner, Australia's most loved and revered children's author of Seven Little Australians and about forty other books, invited Virginia and David to her home to share her collection of memorabilia of her family and especially her Grandmother. This is a family who kept everything, and this has resulted in a vast treasure house of items from Ethel Turner's original diaries, letters and books, to items like desks and chairs. Nothing has been lost. Philippa's collection also encompasses the costumes made for the ABC series production of Seven Little Australians. It was wonderful to be able to handle so many items of Ethel Turner's from so long ago. Ethel Turner remains very popular today and her books have been in print continuously for over one hundred years. She was the first author of Australian children's stories with a truly authentic Australian background. She continued to write after her marriage to Herbert Curlewis and the arrival of two children. Sadly her daughter Jean died at age 32 and Ethel never wrote another book, how-ever she did continue to keep her diaries and record all her family's activities. After quite a few hours of viewing Philippa's treasure trove, Virginia thought she had died and gone to Heaven, "never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be holding Ethel Turner's original diaries, letters books, photos and even her pen." It was finally time to leave and do some time travelling into the next century and beyond as the next event was the acceptance of another invitation to Virginia and David, this time to the international launch of Dr Brett Gooden's book "Spacesuit, A History Through Fact And Fiction". Dr Gooden has been fascinated by Science Fiction from childhood and as a Medical Physiologist, has studied the evolution of the spacesuit and space travel and its effect on the body and its cardiovascular system. The correlation between real life spacesuits and also the fictional suits in books is explored in the book, together with many captivating illustrations from fact and fantasy. Dr Gooden has spent many years studying aerospace and diving medicine and has also collaborated with Dr Mike Augee in the study of the Echidna's ability to control asphyxia whilst underground. This book launch brought an end to a perfect day for Virginia and David and encompassed literature across the centuries.

PHYSIO EXPERIENCE Canowindra Health Service has recently welcomed Mina Rizk, a fourth year Physiotherapy student from CSU Albury. Mina will be in Canowindra for four weeks on his final clinical placement prior to his graduation. As well as taking on a busy clinical case load in Canowindra, he will also experience physiotherapy service provision in Cowra and Cudal thanks to Nicole Brindle and Pauline Jani. His time here is not all work though. Last weekend Carolyn Wythes and Jenny Middleton gave Mina a historical tour of

the Central West visiting Errowanbang Woolshed, Forest Reefs and Millthorpe. The previous week Mina, pictured above with the Canowindra Magic Dragon team, participated in the Orange Dragon Boat Regatta. This was a new event for most paddlers and the team's 10 second im-provement from first to last race is an indication that some practice and training may prove beneficial especially if aspira-tions to take the inter-town crown away from Molong next year are to be realised. The Physiotherapy Department and Canowindra Health Service wish Mina all the best for his Physiotherapy career.

HOW IS YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE? In what may be one of the last workshops run by the Central West Business Enterprise Centre, a Customer Service Workshop is being held in Canowindra Tuesday 4 December between 6-9pm at the Bowling Club. Covering topics including "What is your definition of Customer Service?" and "How does your business manage Customer Service?" you will discover the answers and learn more about building a Customer Service Strategy for your business. To confirm your attendance RSVP to the Business Enterprise Centre on 6362 0448 or [email protected] by Friday 30 November 2012. The Central West Business Enterprise Centre is a community based non-profit organisation established to foster the

growth of business throughout the Central West of NSW. In reference to the opening sentence of this article: In a major blow to local small businesses, the Gillard Labor Government has failed to allocate funding to any of the Business Enterprise Centres (BECs) in the Central West in its latest round of funding, Federal Member for Calare John Cobb said Monday 19 November. Mr Cobb said the Labor Government has announced 62 BECs across the country will share $12 million in funding – but none was allocated to any of the small business advisory services in Parkes, Forbes, Orange or Bathurst. “This is a real slap in the face for small businesses right across Calare, who are the back bone of our local economy,” Mr Cobb said today.

CANOWINDRA PRIMARY Staffing processes are underway for next year. Mr Damien Beaumont has been appointed to Canowindra Primary and will start at the beginning of 2013. He is officially replacing Mrs Tamara Hargraves, who was on leave this year and has now taken a move to Mudgee. Her position this year was filled by a temporary. Before the end of the year an assistant principal will be appointed to replace Mrs Sevil who was on leave at the start of the year and has now retired. That position was also filled on a temporary basis this year. CANOWINDRA HIGH IDENTIFYING AND SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT RISK OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION A videoconference for parents and care givers is being held at the School Thursday 6 December 2012 from 6pm until 7pm. Clinical psychologists Melissa Theobald and Rowena Micha will be talking about the many life events that can be extremely stressful and which can lead to children being at risk of suffering from anxiety and depression. Divorce, bullying, death, exams even Christmas can be stressful times! Come and join two prominent local Clinical psychologists, Melissa Theobald and Rowena Micha and learn some very useful tips and strategies for keeping you and your family healthy and relaxed in the good and not so good times! This is a must for all parents and care-givers to attend! Melissa Theobald is a Clinical Psychologist who has 17 years of clinical experience working with young people and adults. Rowena has a sound understanding of the barriers and difficulties that face clients, clinicians and managers in rural and remote areas and has striven in her career to develop programs and cultivate teams in order to deliver best practices and facilitate efficient and effective teams.

FINAL FOLK @ CANOWINDRA The final shebang for folk@canowindra 2012 will be a rollicking good time, thanks to the feature band this month, November Shorn, pictured above. This band has been playing around this area, in various forms, since 1981 (Canowindra was actually the venue for their very first performance)!! They have provided good fun, dancing and excellent music in all sorts of venues from Sydney to Bourke. Paul Kelly, Geoff Tonkin, Ross Gilbert and Anne Hulak play a vast range of instruments - including mandolin, banjo, bazouki, guitars, bodhran, accordion, harmonicas, whistles, didgeridoo, lager-phones, slide guitar, mandolin, beatbox, flute, clarinet... and of course, the spoons! So, for this last folk@canowindra for the year, there will be the option of sitting and toe-tapping, OR jumping up for a bush dance... as well as enjoying the usual open mike offerings!! Last month, we were amazed by the talents of some teenage performers from Cowra, and we're excited about some local talent from Canowindra High School joining in this time as well. Come along to taste Canowindra at 42 Ferguson Street from 4-6pm this Sunday 25 November. All enquiries, including open mike spots, please contact Nerida Cuddy 0429 048 603.

ANGUS TAYLOR VISITS HUME ELECTORATE Angus Taylor, the Liberal candidate for Hume visited Cowra on Monday with Hon Sussan Ley, Shadow Minister for Employment Participation, Shadow Minister for Childcare and Early Childhood Learning. Earlier in the day Ms Ley had participated in a major announcement with Tony Abbott, releasing the terms of reference for the Coalition’s proposed Productivity Commission inquiry into child care. The inquiry will identify how the current system can be improved to make it more responsive to the needs of parents, to help ensure that child care is more accessible, affordable and flexible for Australian parents. Angus was raised on the Monaro, one of four boys to a family of cattle and sheep graziers, now he, his wife Louise and four young children live in Goulburn. Having recently celebrated his 46th birthday, Angus has already realised some amazing life achievements including being awarded a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University, and representing Australia in the Triathlon World Championships in 2009. Angus is passionate about regional Australia and is determined to use his energy and experience to help break down barriers to development in the country to benefit the people of Hume. For more information please visit www.angustaylor.com.au where you will find contact details to discus with Angus any questions you may have.

OLD VIC - NEW MENU From the freshly toasted Turkish garlic or herb breads, to the wicked selection of desserts on the blackboard, the popular Old Vic Inn's new menu will tempt the most discerning of palates. Launching the new menu this week for the Summer months Jenny Beasley, manager of the Old Vic, was excited by the seafood rich selections, "We source our seafood from De Costi's and feel privileged to offer our guests the quality and freshness for which the De Costi family is famous." With entrees that include salt and pepper king prawns, or polenta crusted calamari freshly prepared in the kitchen, to mains of teriyaki glazed salmon fillets, or the substantial 'Country and Coast' scotch fillet heaped with king prawns in a creamy garlic sauce, the menu reflects Australian's love of seafood and international flavours. For the meat and three veg aficionados, don't despair, the selection of favourites is just as extensive. The hereford prime char-grilled scotch fillet with a variety of sauces or the roasted Lachlan lamb racks with an Asian butter sauce will fill your Auntie Nelly. For a relaxing night out for a special occasion, or giving the cook of the house a night off, call and book a table at the Old Vic Inn. Open for dinner Thursday to Saturday nights, cafe style lunches Thursdays to Sundays, or for functions by arrangement call Jenny on 6344 1009. Please advise of any special dietary requirements upon booking at least 24 hours notice would be appreciated.

BEN HALL SESQUICENTENNIAL Continuing with snippets of the history of Ben Hall and his gang in the lead up to the celebrations to be held over the weekend 12-13 October 2013: Preliminary Raids 1863 In defiance of the police, the Lachlan bush-rangers terrorised the Bathurst-Carcoar area in a series of audacious raids, mostly on set-tlers of wealth and influence. As Canowindra was often cut off by the river after heavy rains the bushrangers found it an ideal spot to play hide and seek with the police. The raids preliminary to those in Canowindra began in July, when Gilbert and O'Meally visited the Commercial Bank in Carcoar in the first daylight bank hold-up in the colony. The raid was abortive. Next, a valuable and speedy horse, Matheroo, was stolen from Thomas Grant of Belubula. On a Sunday night in early August, Vane and others took Tomas Icely's champion grey race horse, Comus II, from the stables at Coombing. All these raids were carried out with impunity. Following these raids The Bathurst Times ran a leading article entitled The Reign of Terror, which said of the bushrangers: 'They evi-dently feel their security from harm, and care no more for the police than if they were so many gadflies'. 2 The article had not gone to press when the bushrangers struck Canowin-dra for the first time. Then the correspondent was moved to comment even more scathingly on the audacity of the gang and the inefficiency of the police. 2 The Sydney Mail, 3 Oct 1863 quoting The

Funding frozen -Labor turns its back on small business in Calare: First it was Remembrance Day services, and now small business support services in Calare are the latest victims of the Gillard Government’s budget crisis, with no funding allocated to any of the Business Enterprise Centres (BECs) in the Central West in the latest round of funding. Sixty-two BECs across the country will share in $12 million in funding – but none was allocated to any of the small business advi-sory services in Parkes, Forbes, Orange or Bathurst. It’s a slap in the face for small businesses right across Calare - the back bone of our local economy, our biggest employer and the driving force of the local retail sector. Business Enterprise Centres provide a fantastic advisory service to local business, and demand at the local BECs is increasing as more and more small businesses seek support. The Orana BEC, which includes services in Parkes and Forbes, and the Central NSW BEC, which provides services to Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon had applied for $96,000 and $100,000 in funding assistance respectively, and both applications have been rejected, leaving support services in the region starved of funds. This is the same Government that has managed to find $20 million to spend on advertising for its disastrous $44 billion National Broadband Network – it’s just disgraceful. In contrast, the Coalition appreciates and values small business and, if elected, will aim to double the existing annual rate of small business growth adding approximately 30,000 new small businesses each year. Public opinion sought for ANZAC Day centenary commemorations: Each year, hundreds of Aussies make the pilgrimage to Gal-lipoli to attend the ANZAC Day service on April 25th, and on the 100th anniversary of that fateful day in 2015, many, many more are expected to make the journey. However, given the site at Gallipoli can only accommodate a limited number of people, the Australian, New Zealand and Turkish Governments have decided to hold a public ballot which they have decided is the fairest way to distribute tickets. This month, the Central West community is invited to have its say on how this ballot will work, at a public forum at the Bathurst RSL next Monday 26th November at 6.15pm. I encourage all those interested in this very significant event to attend and let their thoughts be known. White Ribbon Day: As a White Ribbon Day ambassador, I encourage blokes across Calare to show their support for this great cause, by purchasing a white ribbon on White Ribbon Day on Sunday. White Ribbon Day draws the world’s attention to the issue of violence against women, and is about encouraging men to pledge their opposition to this crime. But with domestic violence and similar crimes often going unreported, White Ribbon Day is also about showing victims support and giving them the strength to speak up about their situation. I encourage everyone to wear a White Ribbon to support this cause on Sunday 25th November.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 12 November 2012

I said when I was elected that I would always be open and honest in my dealings with the community and that would include those occasions when I had to be the bearer of bad news. The NSW Government's announcement last week that the development of the Cobbora Coal Mine would be put on hold is bitterly disappointing. Disappointing because I know only too well what this mining venture means to the local community, the employment and economic activity it would have generated and the frustration shared by many that our local economy really could have benefited from the project at this time. Sadly that isn't going to happen right now. The Treasurer Mike Baird has had to make a tough, yet pragmatic, decision that to proceed with the Cobbora Mine at this stage would expose the NSW taxpayer to a $1.5 billion liability to build and operate the mine. Such a large financial commitment when we are struggling to find additional dollars to maintain vital services in education and health simply cannot be justified. In very large part we have the discredited former Labor Government to thank for this predicament. Labor's decision to invest in Cobbora by agreeing to provide power generators with coal from the mine from 2015/2016 created significant risks and massive liabilities for the State of New South Wales. The contractual arrangements entered into under Labor and inherited by the Liberals and Nationals rested upon an obligation to sell high volumes of coal at low prices. This deal was struck despite a global downturn in coal commodity prices. The acceptance of uncommercial coal contracts which only cover the operating costs without considering the capital costs associated with project speaks volumes about the economic incompetence that characterised Labor's time in office. Labor's Cobbora transaction could end up costing the NSW taxpayer in excess of one and a half billion dollars. Unlike our predecessors, the Liberals Nationals Government is not about to expose the NSW taxpayer to these financial uncertainties and is determined to find a way forward that minimises that risk. Labor's legacy of mismanaged Gentrader sales will need to be addressed prior to further steps being taken with the sale process for Cobbora. It is important to note that although this decision is a significant setback, it certainly does not mean the end of the Cobbora project. The Treasurer has made it clear that the mine remains a priority for the NSW Government and that the planning and approvals process for its development remains on track. A sale or lease strategy will be finalised at the conclusion of that planning approvals process. We will continue to explore all possible options for its development while investigating whether alternative sources of coal are available to satisfy the Government's obligations under existing coal supply agreements. I envisage that there could be a delay before the project proceeds but remain optimistic that the Dubbo electorate will eventually derive significant benefit from the mine. I was sporting an orange tie in State Parliament last week to demonstrate support of SES volunteers in the Macquarie region during Wear Orange Wednesday as part of National SES Week. National SES Week 12-18 November is celebrated each year by State Emergency Services across Australia as a way of congratulating the 40,000 volunteers nationally for their hard work and dedication to helping people in times of need. Although orange is not normally my colour of choice for neck ties, I was happy to parade around the parliament sporting the tie because of the important work our SES volunteers do throughout the year. Nobody can underestimate the contribution made by SES volunteers. In the past year alone they helped more than 20,000 people during the flood emergency that swept across the state and isolated many communities, including towns in the Dubbo electorate. The Federal Government's lack of action over addressing concerns raised with its Murray Darling Basin Plan by NSW communities could derail its entire Basin strategy. It continues to falsely claim it has reached a consensus position with NSW. This could not be further from the truth. I welcome the announcement by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Primary Industries that the NSW Government would not agree to the Basin Plan without substantial changes being made. I cannot understand how the Commonwealth honestly expects Basin communities to surrender 3,200 GL in environmental water when the MDBA cannot deliver upon its existing environmental water holdings. The NSW submission called for limited buybacks to allow communities time to adjust with greater emphasis upon infrastructure and better use of available water to achieve environmental outcomes. Our sensible suggestion for future buybacks to be limited to three per cent of entitlement per valley per decade should not be ignored. The Dubbo electorate won't be a party to a deeply flawed Basin Plan that fails to provide communities with sufficient water entitlements to sustain their future.

SWIMMING CLUB Friday night, Swimming Club welcomed the McNamaras and the Mitchells to the pool for the first time this season along with Madam Butterfly, Rowena Cartwright. Michael McNamara smashed his time in The Spoon by 10 seconds while Tom Mitchell in only his second week ever of swimming club took 7 seconds off the PB he set last week. Ryan Ellis took 2 seconds from his time in the heat and another 6 seconds off that time in the semi, an 8 second improve-ment overall. The amazing improvements didn’t stop in the final as Toby Fisher took off from the blocks as though ‘Jaws’ was after him. He continued the momentum over the lap and smashed his PB by 6 seconds. Unfortunately if you better your time by 2 seconds or more you are ineligible to win The Spoon so a ribbon noting the improvement was given to Toby instead. Chelsea Holdsworth took out The Spoon in 30 seconds a personal best for the night. Angus Fisher showed that the Fishers must be part fish as he broke his 100m breaststroke time by 51 seconds; a phenomenal swim. The relay went to the senior boys, and Rowena, team as despite starting 88 seconds after Lane 1 [according to handicap times] anchor swimmers over-hauled Mitchell Stanley on the last lap and won the relay by just over a second. Joining Jayden with the winners pennants were Regan Hughes, Curtis Hughes, Stewart Russell, Kye Reid and Rowena Cartwright. Remember swimmers roll call is at 5:45pm and if you want to swim in the relay at the end of the night, say yes, yes at roll call.

CENTRAL WEST TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT The 2012 Central West Table Tennis Round Robin Open Championships are on again at Blayney this Saturday 24 November. Players from the Central West and other parts of NSW will gather for the annual event. Organiser and table tennis enthusiast, Matthew Crane of Blayney Table Tennis, says the day attracts players of all skill levels and ages. “We’ve got beginners playing as well as experts, such as former Australian number 1 player Paul Pinkewich who runs Table Tennis World, a table tennis supplies company which sponsors the event. “Everyone is guaranteed to play in each round because nobody can be knocked out,” assures Matthew. “Players from beginner to expert are mixed together at the start and each round progressively sorts the players into groups of similar skill levels. “By the final round the players will be playing against similar level players for the prizes,” he said. Prizes (including cash) on offer at the event are valued from $20-$100 for the winners of each table in the final round of play. Runners-up will also take home a prize. Each player also receives a certificate of participation. There is also a separate trophy for the best Central West player. ”Response to the tournament has been very positive with player numbers up almost 50% on last year,” said Matthew. On the basis of entries already received there will be players from Blayney, Bathurst, Orange, Lithgow, Cowra, Penrith, Nowra and Sydney in the tournament. "We're looking for more people of all ages from the Central West to get into table tennis, so if you’re interested come along and check it out,” invites Matthew. The event is being conducted by Blayney Table Tennis and will be held at Blayney's CentrePoint Sport and Leisure Centre in Osman Street on Saturday 24 November from 9am until around 4pm. Further info can be obtained by contacting Matthew on 0439 623 403 or by emailing [email protected] or by facebooking "Blayney Table Tennis".
