The primary fundraising drive will occur at this year’s Balloon Glow and Night Market event on Saturday 20 April 2013. Late last year CCI called upon the Canowindra public to nominate a worth- while charity, with committee choosing the Community Bus as something they wished to support this year. Arthur Falconer CCI President said, “This is a community event and we work hard to ensure that as many community groups benefit as much as possible. As a committee we have decided that each year a different charity will be nominated to extend this opportunity across the broad cross sections that call Canowindra home”. The bus will be well used to transport older groups like the “Golden Oldies” and “Happy Wanderers” on day trips, day surgery and to hydrotherapy. Meals on Wheels are also looking for a vehicle to be able to take their customers on outings once a month. Last year the Balloon Glow charity raised money to put towards the purchase of the Read triplets new wheelchairs. This was a fantastic success and we hope we can repeat the same results this year. A GOOD INNINGS The Traves brothers of Canowindra are offering Woodlock Stud for dispersal due to their property "Lockwood Park" having been sold. In 1882, William Traves, descendant of Henry Traves of The Oaks, Camden, was the first settler on the property, clearing the land as per the terms of settlement, and it has been in the Traves family ever since. The Traves brothers' parents Leonard and Rita, along Leonard’s mother Ethel Traves, bought the farm in 1951 after selling their property "Fairview" at Toogong. The property was originally called Lockwood, and the original homestead "Altonville", however the property was renamed "Lockwood Park" in the early 1970s. It started as mixed farming on 670 acres, and then another 100 acres were bought in 1974 from a neighbour. The Traves' are selling the historic property, stock and equipement due to retirement and other business ventures. Woodlock Stud, trading under Sevtar Pastoral Pty Ltd, has been breeding quality, pedigree Poll Dorsets since early 1984, founded on Mandagery Park ewes. Woodlock Stud sheep have consistently performed well at all attended shows through-out New South Wales and Victoria. The Traves' have a long history of success with both their Poll Dorset rams and ewes at all local and regional shows, including NSW Championships at Cowra, Royal Canberra Show, Albury Sheep show and last year achieving sixth place in the milktooth ram class with 346-11, and sixth place ewe under 1½ years at the Australasian Championships at Bendigo. Their breeding program has been focused on producing early maturing, well conformed and meatier ewes and rams. Selection of some of the highlights of rams introduced at Woodlock include: ° Gloroy 246/00 - had the highest muscle measure at 2001 Melbourne Royal Show. Purchased for $4,600 which was Top Price at the Gloroy production sale 2001.

° Shellal 289-01 - Excellent Dorset Type and long ram sired by Penrise Independence. Purchased for $5,500 at the Melbourne Royal Show in 2002, Top Price Victorian stud ram at sale.

° Tattykeel 117-04 - a very correct ram sired by Tattykeel Rippa.

UPDATE ON ANHYDROUS AMMONIA SUPPLY Following last year's debacle surrounding the availability of anhydrous ammonia, farmers are looking for information on availability of the gas this year. Representatives from Incitec Pivot Fertilisers will attend the NSW Farmers meeting Tuesday 12 February to update anhydrous users on the supply situation this season. Peter Sullivan, Product Manager - Nitrogen, and Clive Yoxall, General Manager Marketing for Incitec will address the meeting. Nick Fells, Area Sales Manager based at Forbes will also attend.

RELAY FOR LIFE! The 2013 Cowra and District Relay For Life is being held on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May at Sid Kallas Oval. The Cowra Neighbourhood Centre team is inviting Canowindra groups, families and individuals to get together and enter a team, or join one, and help raise money for Cancer Council. “Relay For Life provides a wonderful opportunity to remember those we have lost to cancer and it’s also an occasion to celebrate life and survivorship.” said Camilla Barlow, Relay For Life Coordinator, at the Cancer Council’s Western regional office. To register or join a team in the upcoming Cowra and District Relay For Life simply go online to www.relayforlife.org.au and search Cowra. It is simple, safe and quick to register, and it only costs $15 while the early bird-rate is still available which includes the official Relay For Life t-shirt, cancer smart break-fast and a team kit. There are also spots in the local organising team – so if you want to do that little bit more in the fight against cancer and join a group of fabulous local volunteers – call Sylvia White on 02 6340 1729 Cowra Relay For Life is also on Facebook – so get liking and share your fundraising tips and team ideas! www.facebook.com/cowrarelayforlife

° Springwaters 50/05 - was Senior Champion Ram at Cowra in 2006. Purchased by Woodlock Stud at the 2006 Melbourne Show for $10,500. His sire is Ashbank 132/02, purchased by Springwaters for $10,000 at the 2003 Melbourne Royal Show.

° Springwaters 401/08 - was also purchased in ’09 form Australasian Championships in Bendigo, was by the sire Phoenix, who has produced some outstanding ewes at Woodlock. Very correct, excellent spring drop ram, with some ewes in the sale.

° Ashbank Six Pack 6/02 and sire Ashbank 53/00 were both awarded multiple champion ram sashes at major shows.

° Killarra 26-09 - long meaty ram used by Killarra as Ram lamb, sired by Ulandi Park.

° Derby Downs 23-10 - excellent type and muscling sired by Yentrac.

Woodlock Stud uses high quality rams sourced with attributes to suit early maturing, conformation and of a good Poll Dorset type. Woodlock has genetics from various studs that use Lambplan or Stockscan systems. These include rams from Malkay and Kentish Downs from South Australia; Broughton, Loddonlea, Gloroy, Shellal and Derby Downs from Victoria; and Ashbank, Gererdan, Hilden, Tattlykeel, Rene, Springwaters and Killara from Tasmania. On offer at their dispersal sale on Wednesday 13 February are over 200 lots, including quality ewes and rams. Ewes are mated to Woodlock 346-11 and Killara 26-09, ewe lambs are not joined. Ewes will be scanned prior to sale. This a great opportunity for breeders to complement their existing stud stock with some of the best pedigrees known to the breed. Those just starting out have a rare opportunity to buy quality Poll Dorset ewes scanned in lamb to get off on the right foot for their stud. Catalogues are available by contacting Selling Agents Allan & Gray Co at Cowra on 02 6342 2377 and they will email or fax information upon request. Woodlock Dispersal Sale is being held Wednesday 13 February, 2013, commencing at 10am. Following the stud sale, a clearing sale of machinery will commence at 1pm. See you there - "Woodlock Park" 36 Traves Lane, off Cudal Road, Canowindra.

"There will be plenty of opportunity for questions about current and future supply," said Maree McKay, Chair of the Canowindra District Council of NSW Farmers. The meeting will be held at the Canowindra Services Club at 7.30pm next Tuesday 12 February. Members and non members are welcome to attend. Alix Mc Farland, NSW Farmers Region Eight Services Manager will also be at the meeting. "Many people still haven't had a chance to meet Alix, so I'd invite everyone to come early, grab a drink and have a chat with Alix a nd o u r g u e s t s f r om I n c i t e c before the meeting begins," Mrs McKay said.

COMMUNITY BANK MEETING The Canowindra Business Chamber is hosting Chris Pursehouse, NSW Community Strengthening Manager Bendigo/Adelaide Bank for the third time, to help form a steering committee for the first step in forming a Community Bank. Following on from the public meeting held 25 October last year, the idea was received positively and it was voted to go ahead with the process of gathering interested individuals with a view to forming a steering committee. Once this has been decided, the committee will arrange for the completion of a feasibility to ascertain the suitability of a Community Bank for our town. Then Bendigo Bank will consider the results and advise. The meeting will be held 6pm Thursday 21 February at the Canowindra Services Club.

A CREATIVE START TO THE YEAR The 'Smalls 2013' peoples choice exhibition is one the River Bank Gallery's most popular annual exhibitions. Artists paint, draw or sew onto a 10 inch by 10 inch canvas, anything that they chose. The results are amazing! With over 60 artists participating and over 150 artworks on display, the Gallery walls come to life with a mosaic of works, identical in size, showing the uniqueness of each persons process of creativity. The People's Choice prize is decided by the most popular entry, as voted by people coming to see the exhibition throughout the month. So bring your friends and family to the exhibition opening, or during the month of March, and have a great time deciding the best works. You'll be amazed. People's taste in art is almost as diverse as the artworks themselves. Usually the number of votes are similar between a large number of works, so your vote can really count. Besides the fun of voting, it is a beautiful exhibition and the atmosphere at the gallery is vibrant. It promises to be a great night out in Canowindra. Joedie Davis is one of the Gallery's favourite artists and her upcoming exhibition 'Marray Ngarra' Remembering the Dreaming, is eagerly awaited. In Joedie's words, "My culture only survives through our beliefs in creation. Our stories of the dreamtime refer to the creation of our existence and how all things came to be. It acknowledges our Creator Bayami and other spirit beings. The connection of us to land and us to spirit is the same. We are all a part of each other. The survival of all living things relies on our respect for our culture. In Culture we are ONE. Through this exhibition I would like to share with you my respect for my Culture." Make sure you can come along to the first exhibitions at River Bank Gallery for 2013, Saturday 9 March starting at 6:30pm. Why not grab some paint and brushes, or whatever medium you like and enter 'smalls' 2013. Submissions to be in no later than Wednesday 4 March.

LIVE LIFE - SEE YOUR COUNTRY It's on again! Canowindra Lions Club annual Senior's Day outing, entitled "Live Life - See Your Country". The date is Friday 22 March 2013 and the bus will be leaving Canowindra Bowling Club 7:30am. Cost is $35 per person, which covers transport, morning tea and lunch. The NSW Family & Community Services for Ageing, Disability & Home Care advised the Club that their application for a grant was unsuccessful this year, leaving a deficit of approximately $864. The Club in the past has been assisted by Cabonne Council and is hoping they might again come to their rescue. To help defray costs, the Club intends to have a "Lucky Dip" raffle, that is several prizes suitably wrapped and each winner takes their pick. In future years, if the Club does not get a grant, the cost may have to rise. Ron Cain has a list of people how have indicated their interest, however tickets are available now and Ron can be contacted at 63 Ryall Street or by phoning 02 6344 1497.

Above: Gwen Campbell, Libby Tremain and Johnny Lawrence from Lawrence's IGA present a Community Chest cheque to the Moorbel Hall Committee: Jackie Gilbert, Warwick Bowd, Rodney Ball, Pat Grimshaw, Jean Roth and Jean Walker.

COMMUNITY CHEER As part of the IGA Loyalty Points program for 2012, Lawrence's IGA presented cheques of $4,706.58 each to two worth-while community groups: the Moorbel Hall Committee and the Fitness Path project. A total of $34,784 was accumulated by Lawrence's IGA customers throughout 2012, comprising: $6,374 contributed directly into Community Chest plus $570 from customer transfers, sub totalling $6,944. The amounts donated to the organisations included $1,234.58 each from IGA cheques from specially marked catalogue items. Lawrence's IGA customers accumulated a total of $28,410 over 2,000 individual

Loyalty Point accounts, which were redeemed in November and December last year. The Moorbel Hall Committee and the Fitness Path Working Group would like to express their sincere thanks to Johnny Lawrence and his team at Lawrence's IGA for the generous support given over the years. For further information regarding the IGA Loyalty Point scheme, please ask any of the friendly staff at Lawrence's IGA. You can create your own account to be redeemed just before Christmas each year, or allocate your points each time you purchase to Community Chest, or the Canowindra Food Basket accounts.

Fitness Path Update After an amazing year of support and generosity last year, the Fitness Path Working Group are proud to announce a healthier bank balance due to the success of a grant application and the presentation of a Lawrence's IGA Community Chest cheque. Julie Middleton, coordinator for the Working Group announced recently that the project was successful in receiving $25,000 from a $50,000 grant application through the Department of Sport & Recreation. This, including the amount of $4,706.58 from Lawrence's IGA, gives a balance of just over $136,700. As we are now well into February the working group are gearing up for some more FUNdraising in the community. An 'eggsellent' family friendly Games Day is currently being organised for the end of March. The day will start at approximately 4pm Saturday 30 March 2013 and depending on the number of teams, should finish by 6pm. Afterward a barbecue will be held at the Canowindra Pythons Rugby Union Clubhouse with prizes awarded to winners of various categories. There will be a variety of games targeted to a cross section of fitness levels, so you don't need to be a super athlete to participate. Once the activities and games for the day are finalised, entry forms will be available from the Newsagency and other local outlets. Also, a food stall is being organised for the Balloon Glow and Night Markets for the evening of Saturday 20 April. Keeping the health and fitness theme, the menu will consist of low fat tasty food that will appeal to the whole family. New polo shirts are being sourced which will be black and white, embroidered with “Canowindra Fitness Path” on the front, and the logo with “Don’t be a Witness Get into Fitness” printed on the back. These will be on display at Canowindra Newsagency soon, and orders can be taken there or at the Health Centre. Styles for men and women will be avail-able, and the fabric will be exercise friendly and better suited to warmer weather. Coming up: businesses, families and individuals will be invited to purchase personalised pavers. Similar to the very successful Canowindra Public School Bottle Tree Path project, pavers will be used in sections along the Fitness Path and will be an enduring legacy for those who contribute. Keep a look out for flyers and order forms in the coming weeks.

The Hon John Cobb MP Federal Member for Calare

FEDERAL ROUNDS Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Monday 4 February 2013

Off to the polls we go on September 14: Scandals and resignations have overshadowed the Federal election date announcement by Julia Gillard last week. If charges laid against former Labor MP Craig Thomson and the resignation of two key ministers is symptomatic of Labor’s campaign, it’s going to be very shifty and chaotic indeed. And, on the eve of Parliament resuming for 2013 we see yet another reshuffle of Gillard’s Cabinet. The Coalition was already on the front foot, having launched our vision and direction the weekend preceding the Prime Minister’s announcement. “Our Plan – Real Solutions for all Australians” explains the direction, values and policy priorities of the next Coalition Government. It’s a positive plan that will deliver more jobs, higher wages and better services for Australian families, while reducing cost of living pressures. It will immediately take the pressure off Calare families and business by scrapping Labor’s unwanted and ineffective carbon tax. The plan can be downloaded from www.realsolutions.org.au as a pdf, or to view on your iPad or Kindle. The election is also an opportunity for our region to get their fair share of Federal funding after five years of receiving minimal infrastructure spending. Calare, like other regional electorates, is where we produce, grow and make products for all Australians. We are the “doers” of Australia and this should be reflected in Federal government funding. We will back our miners, farmers, manufacturers, tourism operators and power generators to put regional Australia front and centre in a national economic recovery. Agriculture continues to do it tough: Despite recent rain around the eastern parts of the electorate, areas further west continue to be in desperate need of moisture. In the last few years never have I heard more people saying how tough it is to make money from agriculture. In government our biggest job will not be to give handouts to farmers and the like, but to advocate for an environment where agriculture is sustainable and can prosper, that is, helping farmers help themselves. The Coalition has identified agriculture as a key pillar of the economy under our Real Solutions plan for Australia. Tour of Queensland flood affected communities: On Friday and Saturday I visited several central Queensland communities affected by flooding along with Leader of the Nationals, Warren Truss and Federal Members of the affected areas, as part of my shadow agriculture portfolio responsibilities. The communities of North Burnett, Banana, Gladstone and Bundaberg have been hit hard by Mother Nature and it was devastating to see the damage and hear first-hand the stories of loss. Imagine walking into a pub and seeing the water line half-way up the ATM machine, dairy farms that couldn’t milk for five days, orchardists with citrus trees that have disappeared, sugar cane crops waterlogged for too long, or houses washed off their stumps along suburban streets and that is the picture we were presented with. However it’s times like these Australians show just how resilient we are and how we can support each other in times of need.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 4 February 2013 In historic news for the Electorate this week we are awaiting the arrival of the NSW Cabinet for a Community cabinet meeting to be held in Dubbo on Monday 11th February. I have heard that there is a contingent coming from right across the electorate so I hope that each community is represented and has a great chance to talk to the Premier and his Minister on the issues that most affect their lives and towns and how the State Government can best serve them. Stakeholder meetings have been organised with Ministers on key issues and a Public forum 12 noon @ the Dubbo RSL. The NSW Liberals/National Government is committed to regional communities and the community cabinet offers a great chance for locals to raise matters with the government and everyone is welcome. Job's Figures: I welcome recent CENSUS figures that reveal a 5.1% improvement in employment in the electorate since 2006. The State Government's policy of regional relocation incentives and decentralisation is exemplified by 20 incoming positions at the to be established Dubbo Crown Lands and business centre. There are ebbs and flows in employment as we all know but there are encouraging signs that this electorate continues to attract continual growth across most communities and visiting local businesses last week gives me the chance to see first hand the confidence despite some tough economic circumstances employers still have in this electorate. Nick Griener: Former NSW Premier & current Chairman of Infrastructure NSW The Hon Nick Greiner is paying a visit to Dubbo on Friday 15th February as the guest of the Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries, the Member for Bathurst Paul Toole and myself. Nick Greiner will be guest speaker at a dinner to be held the Dubbo RSL with a strong representation from right across the Central and Far West attending. Councils from right across the Region have accepted the invitation to ensure the Chairman listens to the Infrastructure needs west of the sandstone curtain. This is a great opportunity to push the claims of our regional communities for the investment in infrastructure we need and to make sure we are part of the broader State's plans for Infrastructure. Don Ritchie Suicide Prevention Award: I was pleased to hear of the success that Ann-Maree Hartley from Dubbo was recently awarded the Inaugural Don Ritchie Suicide Prevention award at a ceremony in Sydney. Every death from suicide is one death to many and I'm pleased to see that people like Ann-Maree are working hard in the elec-torate raising awareness about suicide prevention. Other groups like the Little River Big Picture Landcare Group are another fabulous organisation doing a lot in this area with the Farmer helping Farmer program. Ms Hartleys award was in honour of the late Don Ritchie whose dedication and compassion saved hundreds of lives at the Gap in Sydney. New Nurse Graduates: Another large contingent of Nurse graduates were welcomed to the electorate this week who will be to be deployed across Hospitals for their 12 month placement throughout the electorate. Having a mother who was a Nurse I know how valuable this occupation is to the functioning of our Health service and the dedicated and valuable role Nurses play in our community. I know our Health Minister is committed to ensuring Nurses are continued to be supported and I was pleased to welcome such a great large bunch this week. BACK TO BETTER SCHOOL: Teachers and students returning to school across NSW these last week will have noticed some significant improvements as part of our $450 capital works spending in education. A lot of work was done over the summer holidays on new classrooms and other facilities, new science labs and general maintenance projects. We’re determined to provide the best possible learning environment for students. Capital works is on top of our record $53.5 billion funding for education over the next four years - compared with $46 billion in the last four years under Labor. Despite some scare campaigns form Unions and Labor we are committed to continual investment in Regional education we acknowledge is a lot to do and I wish everyone from Principals, Teachers, students, support staff and P&Cs all the best for what we hope will be an outstanding year for education.

FOUND sterling silver bracelet at Memorial Park Sunday 3 February. Should have lost a bracelet, please call into The Phoenix office to collect.

So far today, God, I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or over- indulgent. I'm really glad about that. But in a few minutes, God, I'm going to get out of bed and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help.
