DIRT MUSIC AT FOLK @ CANOWINDRA This month, Folk @ Canowindra will be a week earlier than usual, because of the Easter weekend, so please come and see us Sunday 24 March from 4-6:15pm at taste Canowindra in Ferguson Street. Our feature act this month is actually a collaboration of folk club regulars: Paul Carpenter, Clare Coleman, Steve Whitehead and Corrine King (left), all are members of Dirt Music in Orange. Paul has been singing locally for almost 25 years, most recently with the Tenpenny Bit bush band. He has brought his bass baritone voice to the open mike at Folk @ Canowindra since 2011. Steve and Corrine have been in a range of bands for many years and Clare joined their living room practise sessions last year. Clare, Corrine and Steve were a feature act at Folk @ Canowindra last year and Clare is a regular on the open mike sessions. They have combined their repertoires to bring a rich mixture of new and familiar songs to Folk @ Canowindra. Poets and acoustic musicians are invited to perform in the open mike part of the afternoon. Please contact Nerida Cuddy to express interest, or for any further information, on 0429 048 603.

To the editor... With reference to Mr. Templin’s letter to the editor of two weeks ago I would like to say that I am glad that not everybody in this community is as negative as he is. Cabonne Council has made a huge difference to Eugowra road. As a person that travels along it nearly every day I am thankful for the upgrade and I would like to say that I feel it is ten times better and safer than before. Maybe there is more to do but I do understand budget-ary restraints. As far as resurfacing Gaskill Street I would like to acknowledge the professional manner in which it was carried out, only three days of minor inconvenience and at a time of year when business interruption is not so critical. The part of the road he is complaining about between Blatchford and Ferguson Street I understand to be RTA responsibility. I would also like to acknowledge the great work council has done in putting footpaths around many of our streets for ease of walking for everybody. Generally the town and approaches on most sides have been better presented by the council over the last few years. Maybe a better walkway on the western side of the road between the John Grant Bridge and Gaskill Street would link South Canowindra with the rest of the town to make it safer for children going to school. This would add interest for tourists going for walks and may also be used for a cycle way or fitness path. Thank you to our councillors on behalf of the positive people in our town. To the editor... Our fine country of Australia has a heritage of mateship and courage in tackling difficult conditions to forge the nation we enjoy today. Recent media coverage of refugees, illegal immigrants, includes many complaints of living conditions that they experience in places like Christmas Island etc. I migrated to Australia in 1969 at the age of 15. I needed to be able to speak English, be fit and healthy and have a sponsor (No government assistance back then). I was close to dying of thirst in 1970 carrying my bag to my first mining job in the north of South Australia in January heat of 45 Celsius. I spent much of my life building and operating the mining industry in outback locations. My life, though in tough conditions, was fortunate in comparison to early settlers and miners, who built railways, and cleared the bush for the farms that now give us our food supply. Similarly, our armed forces endured tough conditions in deserts and jungles, living in tents, and made sacrifices for Australia to protect the freedoms and lifestyle we enjoy. To allow the current influx of illegal immigrants to play on our established character of stable western democracy, to allow them to cry foul about our charity is a slap in the face. Are we going soft on these who come in illegally and make demands for luxury lifestyles, when our pioneers and forebears lived in tents in far worse conditions? These recent arrivals have never experienced, nor have any respect for, the hardships over the past two hundred years that forged this country. If they cannot be grateful for tents and basic comforts, then they can go back to whence they came. I am glad I came. I didn’t complain. I worked, and I became an Australian. Yours sincerely, Brian Cain, Cargo.

SOLO PIANO RECITAL AT ALL SAINTS' The recipient of the 2012 Australian National Piano Award will be touring the Central West this month. Daniel de Borah will be visiting Canowindra Sunday 24 March at All Saints Anglican Church, Belmore Street from 3pm, where he will perform an exciting program of music including: Prokofiev - Sonata No.9, Op.103; Brahms - 4 Pieces for Piano Op.119; and Schumann - Kreisleriana Op.16. In preparing for this concert Daniel said, “There is so much wonderful music for piano. Brahms’ second piano concerto is a favourite and, of course, anything by Mozart. If I leave one out I feel I’m being unfair on the others. Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Prokofiev and Brahms: they are all wonderful,” he added. Born in Melbourne, De Borah’s family moved to Canberra when he was young. When he was 10 his mother took him to Budapest to study at the Liszt Academy of Music, “My goal is a life in music. I don’t know any different.” Study at the St Petersburg State Conservatory, Russia and the Royal Academy of Music, London followed. As a child of musicians De Borah was immersed in music whilst growing up. His mother, Anna De Borah, a respected piano teacher for young children, was his first teacher. His father, Vernon Hill, is one of Australia’s most renowned flautists and formerly the head of the wind department at the Australian National University’s School of Music. With a concert career both in Australia and the UK, De Borah has performed recitals at Wigmore Hall and London's Southbank Centre as well as concerto performances with the English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players and with the Royal Philharmonic Hall at the Barbican and Cadogan Halls, London. In Australia he has performed with the Sydney, Adelaide, and Canberra Symphony Orchestras and has been a guest artist at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, the Canberra International Music Festival and the Coriole Music Festival. In 2012 De Borah toured Australia with the Australian String Quartet playing Shostakovich's Piano Quintet.

NEW DRIVERS SHARE A COUNTRY JOURNEY Learner drivers will have the opportunity to try driving on country roads and learn from each other’s experience at the same time, when the ‘Log Book Run’ begins later this month. Cabonne Council mayor Ian Gosper said the program gets the balance right between practical driving experience and the opportu-nity to hear about and discuss accurate road safety information. “On each of the ‘Log Book Run’ days learner-drivers and their supervising passenger will tackle a route through the region, then they’ll sit down together and hear a session of important road safety information and be able to discuss their experiences together,” Cr Ian Gosper said. Road Safety Officer for Orange and Cabonne, Andrea Hamilton-Vaughan, said the road safety sessions will include local information. “The program is tailored made for Orange and Cabonne with emphasis on specific crash risks that occur in our local area. It’s about encouraging low risk driving and it’s based on independent scientific research on young drivers,” Andrea Hamilton-Vaughan said. Bookings are now open for the year’s first ‘Log Book Run’ day on March 24. Sponsorship from Cadia Valley Operations, Orange City Council, Cabonne Shire Council and community fund-raising by Ms Learne Spicer will mean seven Log Book Run events will be held throughout the year. A free booklet of 10 drives is available at the Orange Civic Centre. Bookings for Sunday 24 March ‘Log Book Run’ are now open. Phone 02 6393 8600.

MANILDRA RAIL CROSSING DETOURS Separate detours will remain in place for light vehicles and trucks for another week as roadworks are carried out at a Manildra rail crossing. Cars and other light vehicles will be diverted around local streets, but trucks will be detoured away from the town during the work on Henry Parkes Way until 25 March 2013. Initially the detours were to operate until 18 March 2013 and again on the week-end of 23-24 March 2013, but Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the RTA) have informed Cabonne Council the work will continue into a second week. The roadworks on either side of the Meranburn crossing are part of a major upgrade of the level crossing and will enhance the safety of both locals and visitors using Henry Parkes Way. Light vehicles will be detoured through Manildra via Kiewa Street, Boree Street, Parkes Street, Orange Street, Gumble Road, North Coates Creek Road and Henry Parkes Way. Heavy vehicles will be diverted via Eugowra along the Escort Way at Parkes and at the “Monument” intersection of The Escort Way and Henry Parkes east of Cudal. School buses and Countrylink bus services on the route will continue to operate as scheduled using the light vehicle detour. Detour directional signs will be in place, and variable message boards advising motorists of the changes will be placed in various locations in the Cabonne local government area.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE INTERNET Want to know more about the internet? Like it or not the internet is affecting us all. We’re going through a huge transition where almost everything you want or need is now available online! Many of us are using Skype and Facebook to connect with our friends and family. And we use it more and more for banking and online shopping. However this is just the tip of the iceberg, and more and more businesses are using the Internet and social media for purposes that that we haven’t even begun to imagine. This two hour workshop sets out to demystify many aspects the Internet, and discuss many of the benefits of the web. On the serious side we will also cover social networking, misuse of the web, and how to protect your data and identity. Family and friends also welcome. Government media reforms attack free speech: This week in Parliament we are due to debate the government’s hastily announced media reforms. The Coalition will furiously oppose any attempt to impose additional regulation on the media. These proposed changes are purely an attack on freedom of speech and have already been condemned by major Australian media outlets. After more than two years and two lengthy reviews all we’ve got is a dictatorship-style control of information. These changes are so dangerous, giving the government a power it should never have, the power to determine the content of the press. Essentially, the government must be held to account and this one just doesn’t want to be. This ‘take it or leave it’ attitude is becoming very typical for Labor and the demand by the Communications Minister for this legislation to be passed next week is ludicrous. The reforms are set to increase the policing of the media industry, as well as approve mergers and acquisitions and oversee the existing press councils. We already have laws to do this! It’s just a way for the government to punish media outlets they don’t like. Parkes Star Hotel turns 100! The Star Hotel in Parkes is turning 100 on March 19 and I was on board to help the iconic watering hole celebrate on Saturday evening by unveiling a plaque and tasting a quiet ale. The friendly pub is well known to locals and travellers from all over. The original licence to trade was granted on March 19, 1913 to a Mr J F Nicholas. He would become the first of 44 licensees to run the Star Hotel over the 100 year period, which is quite remarkable. The Star Hotel is truly local – it was built using special blocks made in a mould by the great grandfather of local resident, Bob Cocks. It was a grand old design with big balconies and verandahs. The hotel has undergone many changes over its lifespan – a major fire in 2002 led to it being refurbished to its current state. Seniors have their week: NSW Seniors Week kicked off on Sunday and continues during the week. It was great to join with some of our wonderful seniors in Orange to launch their festivities on Sunday. The event celebrates the valuable contribution seniors make to our community. Here in Calare, it’s our way of saying thank you to seniors and a great opportunity for all the generations to join with older people to celebrate. In fact, it’s the largest celebration for people over 60 in the southern hemisphere. The region is fortunate to have an Ambassador for the NSW Seniors Week in Cudal resident Merle Parrish. Merle is a true champion baker – she has set records and collected awards for her dominant performances as a competitive producer of cakes, biscuits and scones in shows and fairs all over NSW. She has featured on TV’s high-rating MasterChef and her book of recipes Merle’s Kitchen is a bestseller. There’s plenty on offer this week and I encourage all those over 60 to get involved. Contact your local Council for more information on what’s happening during the week.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 18 March 2013 The NSW Government has announced changes to the logbook requirements for learner drivers participating in the new Safer Driving Course that will be rolled out from July. This is a great initiative that demonstrates our commitment to improving road safety for young drivers and their families in the Dubbo electorate. Drivers who enrol in the course will be offered the chance to reduce their logbook driving hours from 120 to 80. Young drivers and their parents can often struggle with the requirement to log 120 hours behind the wheel on their L-plates. Taking part in the Safer Drivers Course and having professional lessons will allow learner drivers up to 40 hours credit towards their driver training. Learners will also be allowed to travel up to 90km/h instead of the current 80km/h limit from 1 July when travelling around the Dubbo electorate. This will give them more supervised driving experience on higher speed roads in preparation for their graduation to P-Plates. With statistics showing that during the first few months of driving alone on P-plates, young drivers are nine times more likely to be injured in a crash than drivers on L-plates, it is important that beginner drivers are in a better position to graduate to driving without supervision. The Safer Drivers Course will be rolled out based on community uptake and the availability of service providers and adopts a different approach to conven-tional driver training courses which tend to focus on the mechanics of driving and road rules. This course will include dealing with different road conditions, under-standing factors beyond a driver's control and indentifying risks on the road. Learner drivers should look to enrol in the course when they have achieved 50 hours driving in their logbooks. The cost of the course will be capped at an affordable price for each participant with any additional cost of delivering the course covered by the Community Road Safety Fund. Options have also been identified to help young drivers meet the requirements to qualify for their P-plates from remote, lower socio-economic and Aboriginal communities. Drivers under 25 years of age in remote areas will be able to obtain a provisional licence for the purpose of driving to work, education and medical appointments. The restricted licence can only be granted if they have passed the driving test and completed 50 supervised driving hours. A pilot program in three remote communities west of the Newell Highway will begin in July. I recently presented NSW Business Sustainability awards to businesses in the Dubbo electorate at a ceremony held at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on behalf of Environment Minister Robyn Parker. The Dubbo RSL Memorial Club achieved Silver Partner status with the NSW Government's Sustainability Advantage Program with its saving of large amounts of water and energy by using ten 14,500 rainwater tanks and 140 solar panels. Dubbo City Council has cut its energy use by 12 per cent over the last two years with its staff placing high importance upon improved sustainability, while Taronga Western Plains Zoo has added sustainability into its strategic plans in line with NSW Government policy. After auditing their energy use, Dubbo RSL and Dubbo City Council are saving $73,500 a year in energy costs. Both of these organisations were awarded Bronze Partner status for their efforts. The Forbes Sport and Recreation Club is benefiting from the installation of improved lighting, saving 18.4 megawatt hours of electricity per year and representing a saving of $3,849 on their power bill. In Parkes, Central West Agricentre is saving 10.7 megawatts hours of electricity and $2,513 in charges from more efficient air conditioning and lighting of the premises. I wish to acknowledge the important contribution made by senior citizens in the Dubbo electorate as we celebrate Seniors Week. A number of events have been planned for the week right across the electorate geared towards the theme 'Live Life' which focuses on sport and recreation, the arts and technology. I hope Dubbo electorate seniors enjoy the week's festivities as they most certainly deserve our gratitude for all they have done for the community.

FINAL 33M SWIMMING CLUB NEXT WEEK Swimming Club swam their last laps for the season and the swimmers still had enough energy for some personal best times. The 400m freestyle championships was first, and after 12 laps there were some tired swimmers. Not Sammy Austin or Finlay Rowston who both dropped a second from their best times. There was disappointment in the Final as Josie Mitchell aquaplaned down the pool to touch over a second ahead of second place. Unfor-tunately she swam a 3 second PB and over the allowable 2 second margin to win the Spoon. The Spoon, when they come, went to Ellie Giger who lowered her time by one second and hers and Josie’s time is now 29 seconds for the 33m freestyle. Brayden Fliedner won the Belly Flop over some stiff competition. Lane 4 won the relay with Finlay Rowston, Wade Kinsela, Joanna Balcombe, Angus Fisher, Ellie Dicton, Laura Flannery, Jackson Reeves, Rianna Reeves and Lydia Coady taking home the pennants. This week is Presentation Night which begins at 6pm with a small AGM followed by Presentations and a barbecue. So come along and celebrate the ‘final’ swimming club at the 33m pool length.

CANOWINDRA WOMEN'S BOWLS Results of No. 4 Pennants played on Tuesday 12 March: Cowra defeated Canowindra (1) with an aggregate of 39-27, each team winning one rink, Cowra scoring four points and Canowindra one point. Thanks to Umpire Johnno Preston, Controlling Body Moyna Rue, Greenkeeper Richard Waugh and Bar Staff Eryn Traves. Congratulations to Canowindra (2) on winning their first match, defeating Forbes with an aggregate of 42-32 winning both rinks and scoring the maximum five points. There was one game of social triples played. Moyna Rue, Jean Roth and Betty Hodge defeated Moyna Rue, Mona Hamer and Daph Bryant 10-5. Moyna played double lead. Results of No. 4 Pennants played on Thursday 14 March: Canowindra (1) defeated Parkes with an aggregate of 47-41, winning one rink each, Canowindra scoring four points and Parkes one point. Canowindra (2) were defeated by Cowra with an aggregate of 37-35, winning one rink each, Cowra scoring four points and Canowindra one point. A close result with only two shots difference. My apologies to the readers of our bowls news, I made a mistake last week, Nancy Morrow did not have surgery, she had special treatment on her foot, an ultrasound followed by a cortisone injection, which worked extremely well. Congratulations to Cowra No. 2 Pennant team on winning the Pennant for 2013. Only two teams played in this event Cowra and Parkes. Until next week good bowling all. SSSShhhhiiiirrrrlllleeeeyyyy

Western Challenge League Tag Day Andrew Pull, president of Woodbridge Cup Rugby League is unsure who will win, but certain it is going to be a great competition in the upcoming League Tag Carnival. "The two previous winners Bathurst St Pats and Canowindra must start favourites for the knockout after being Premiers in their respective competitions, but I’m not so sure. "Condobolin are a good side that have improved every year in the Woodbridge Cup and have a couple of girls that can win it by themselves, they were runners up in the Woodbridge Cup last year. "Orange Cyms were beaten by Canowindra in a trial a couple of weeks back, but all reports say Cyms are skilful, fast and athletic, they struggled in defence pulling the tags off in the trial, but if they have trained well and picked up the knack of getting the tags off, they could win. Then you have Hawks that finished third in Group 10 last season, and the other cup sides Molong, Cargo and Grenfell that are into their fourth season of League Tag. Young and Cowra are both sports towns so will be strong. The only team I don’t know anything about is Blackheath." Free admission for the Ladies League Tag ‘Western Challenge’ at Tom Clyburn Oval Canowindra on 23 March should see a large crowd witness the finest female athletes across the Western Region showcasing their League Tag skills. There will be three pools: Pool A Bathurst St Pats, Grenfell Goannas, Molong Bulls Pool B Orange Hawks, Condobolin Rams, Cargo Blue Heelers, Young Cherry Pickers, Orange Cyms Pool C Canowindra Tigers, Cowra Magpies, Blackheath Blackcats The highest ranked team from Pool A and Pool C will progress into the Semi Finals. The two highest ranked teams from Pool B will progress through to the Semi Finals. 11.30am Orange Hawks v Cargo - Field 1. 11.30am Grenfell v Molong - Field 2. 12pm Orange Cyms v Condobolin - Field 1. 12pm Cowra v Blackheath - Field 2. 12.30pm Bathurst v Molong - Field 1. 12.30pm Orange Hawks v Young - Field 2. 1pm Canowindra v Blackheath - Field 1. 1pm Cargo v Orange Cyms - Field 2. 1.30pm Young v Condobolin - Field 1. 1.30pm Bathurst v Grenfell - Field 2. 2pm Canowindra v Cowra - Field 1. 2.30pm Semi Final 1 - Field 1. 3pm Semi Final 2 - Field 1. 3.45-4pm Western Challenge Final - Field 1.
