FX-FJ VINTAGE CAR VISIT The 21st Australian Early Holden Federation (AEHF) FX-FJ Nationals are being held in Bathurst for five days from Friday 28 December 2012 to Tuesday 1 January 2013. Day 3 on Sunday sees a contingent of the 200 vehicles expected undertake a 'Mystery Drive'. A reliable local source who has quite a bit of knowledge of Holdens, assures that the drivers will be visiting Canowindra. Reminiscent of the large number of vintage vehicles viewed in Gaskill Street on Easter Sunday this year, there will be some beautifully restored and maintained Holdens to enthral the enthusiasts. Unlike the Easter event, the main street won't be closed off, however the cars will be parked around town so that you can get a good look at them. Held every two years, the nationals are held in different locations and hosted by the relevant car clubs. This year's nationals are being hosted by the good people of the Sydney chapter of the FX-FJ Holden Club of Australia. For a great Sunday out, get to Gaskill Street from around 10am and have a look at the beautiful cars manufactured between the years 1948 and 1956. Charlie McCarron's Holden Museum at Canowindra Motors will be holding tours for the motorists, so if you are interested in having a look yourself, please wait until the cars have left the building. CANOWINDRA CHALLENGE FLAGSHIP Canowindra's iconic balloon festival has received funding through the NSW Government's Regional Flagship Event Program, the Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said today. The Canowindra Balloon Challenge will receive a one year grant of $10,000. "I'm really delighted the NSW Government sought fit to support this wonderful event," said Mr Grant. "Held over seven days in April annually, the winner and first runner up of the Canowindra Balloon Challenge will proceed to the 2014 World Championships in Hot Air Ballooning. "The event has been running for three years, last year 725 visitors attended the event with 1,460 predicted for 2013." The Regional Flagship Event Program was established in 1996 to identify and assist the development of events that reflect and contribute to the unique character of the tourism regions of NSW. Events become the ‘flagship’ events for Regional NSW and are promoted within Destination NSW marketing activity. The program has provided more than $5 million in funding to 224 separate events to date. The level of assistance ranges from a one-year grant of $10,000 to events receiving triennial funding of $20,000 per year for three years. The Canowindra Balloon Challenge will take place from 20 to 27 April 2013, so mark it in your diaries now.

GASKILL STREET CROSSING ‘WIN-WIN’ Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper says the input of Canowindra residents may result in a “win-win” situation in the design of a safe disabled access crossing for the town’s historic main street. Cr Gosper commended the contribution of residents at a well-attended public meeting called this week by the Canowindra Business Chamber to discuss plans to provide safer crossings in the street. The business chamber will now ask the council to consider installing one crossing rather than the three proposed in the latest plans. The crossing designs, which involve minor extensions of the footpath, are part of an upgrade which will include the resurfacing of Gaskill Street. “There have been differing opinions on the design and number of crossings required and these opinions were respectfully and politely debated by community members,” Cr Gosper said. “There have been a number of revised plans and the council will work with the community to try to provide a facility that has the consensus of the community.” The Mayor thanked the business chamber for arranging the meeting which was also attended by Canowindra councillors Kevin Walker and Anthony Durkin, as well as the council’s General Manager Andrew Hopkins and Director of Engineering and Technical Services Rob Staples. “There was a lot of constructive discussion, weighing up safety, access issues and the impact on the heritage streetscape, and hopefully people left with a better understanding of these issues,” Cr Gosper said. “I think that generally everyone agrees Gaskill Street is very difficult to cross for people with disabilities or mobility issues. “I don’t want to pre-empt any decision of council, but I’m sure my fellow councillors will be keen to go back to Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the RTA) with the community’s preference to see if we can come up with a solution that satisfies residents’ desires, the need to provide disabled crossing facilities that comply with Australian standards and a design that is sympathetic to the heritage street-scape.”

To the editor... I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the wonderful community of Canowindra for the love and support granted to me and my family since our car accident on 1st October. Thank you for the cards, flowers, gifts, meals, calls, visits, prayers and wishes that have helped sustain us over such a difficult time. We are honoured to be part of such a fantastic community! The boys are doing well and I hope to be back on track in the not too distant future. Merry Christmas to you all and may 2013 bless you with good health and happiness. Warmest wishes from Carolyn, Steve, Liam and Caleb Kohler VISIT OUR LOCAL MUSEUMS

The high quality of Cabonne’s museums and galleries has been showcased at one of the State’s major awards ceremonies. Canowindra Historical Society and Museum, the Age of Fishes Museum at Canowindra and the Orange Blayney Cabonne Sustainable Collections Project all received highly commended awards at the prestigious 2012 IMAGinE Awards in Sydney. The awards celebrate the achievements and diversity of the museum and gallery industry, comprising more than 650 organisations. A delighted Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper congratulated all three museums. “With more than 70 nominations, the finalists represented the best of regional and metropolitan NSW visual arts and cultural heritage experiences,” he said. “With Cabonne’s three finalists being highly commended, the awards emphasised the wonderful attractions and collections we have in our area.” Cr Gosper’s words were echoed by Museums and Galleries NSW chief executive officer Michael Rolfe. “These highly commended recipients represent extraordinary achievements made throughout the year, with some strong examples of how innovative strategies are helping to create more accessible and meaningful collections,” he said. Chairman of the Age Of Fishes board, Mr Darryl Fliedner said, “The audio tour project resulted in a successful $85,000 grant through the Community Partnerships Program (Industry and Investment). "The project was driven primarily by volunteers and our Manager, Fiona Ferguson”. The Community Partnerships grant enabled the Age Of Fishes Museum to purchase the audio machines, the tour itself and train the volunteers to use the machines which deliver a consistent, accurate and timely product to visitors. “Many thanks go to Dr Robin Williams, Karina Kelly, Maryanne Leigh, Dr Alex Ritchie, Monica Yeung, Mim Loomes and Bruce Loomes who assisted with the tour development and the development of exhibitions”. said Mr Fliedner. Visit our museums during these Christmas holidays, we have international quality right on our doorstep!

ROAM INTO TROJAN & CO. In August this year Ben Webb decided to utilise his love of interior design to create a business where he could share his skills and experiences with others. Trojan & Co. has now been open for four weeks, and Ben is happy to say that it is a great success. With extensive knowledge gained from working as an international freelance fashion stylist and make-up artist, Ben has created a welcoming, elegant and eclectic feel for Trojan & Co., with many unique items displayed. Named after Ben's beloved 19 year old chestnut quarter horse, pictured above, there is definitely a equine theme present. And although he is now retired, there are rumours that Trojan might be making an appearance at the bushranger celebrations later next year! Having travelled widely with his work, Ben has found that different cultures have influenced his choices and variety of product and the layout in the shop. Stocking a range of quality, well made products such as Palm Beach Collection candles which use environmentally friendly soy wax that burns slower with less heat than usual candles. Other favourites include Australian company Bits and Bugs mounted, framed butterfly specimens. The specimens are farmed specifically for display, so no protected nor endangered species are used. In keeping with Ben's ambition to offer different make-up workshops next year, the range of O•P•I nail polish has already proven popular, with new stock arriving this week. This also introduces one of Ben's good friends, Alice from Deliciously Bronzed, who is now taking appoint-ments for mini & deluxe manicures, mini pedicures and shellac nails. Alice will be in store on a weekly basis and is taking bookings now on 0481 238 231. A new installation is the coffee espresso machine with Ben serving Art of Espresso beans. Blackboard selections which changes daily includes such treats as cakes, tarts or home made pavlova. Ben is humbled by our community, "I can't believe how lovely and supportive everyone has been who have entered the store, and the well wishes I've received from locals is mind blowing!" With the unique talent and friendliness that comes naturally to Ben, along with our supportive and embracing community, Trojan & Co. is assured to be around for quite a long, successful time.

The Hon John Cobb MP

Federal Member for Calare FEDERAL ROUNDS Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security

Monday 17th December 2012

Final Federal Rounds for 2012: As I write my final Federal Rounds for 2012 I reflect on what has been a year of highs and lows for the people of Calare. We’ve achieved some great things, like the opening of the Northern Distributor Road in Orange, assistance for Forbes residents following severe flooding earlier in 2012, and the renovation of the Lithgow Aquatic Centre just to name a few. However, the Gillard Government has let the Calare electorate down in many ways – introduction of the Carbon Tax, scrapping of the Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Scheme, and failing to allocate funding to any of the Business Enterprise Centres, among many others. On the Federal front, the Government continues to crabwalk away from its “come hell or high water” promise of a surplus. On no fewer than 150 separate occasions Wayne Swan has committed the Government to delivering a budget surplus in the current financial year. However, residents of Calare understand that the Labor Government does not honour its promises. Last year they claimed a $23b deficit – which turned out to be $43b deficit. They promised a 2012-13 surplus but have in fact delivered $172b of cumulative deficits and over a quarter of a trillion dollars of gross debt. It’s enough. The Coalition has a plan for a strong and prosperous economy that would get the budget back under control. Our plan will deliver new jobs, higher wages, cut red tape and get rid of Labor’s confidence-sapping carbon and mining taxes. Australian Year of the Farmer campaign: As 2012 draws to a close, so too does the Australian Year of the Farmer campaign. This campaign celebrated the hard work of everyone involved in producing, processing, handling and selling products from 136,000 farms across the country. As the Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, and as a farmer myself, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those involved in the campaign, particularly the numerous volunteers who worked tirelessly to raise the profile of Australian farmers. Agriculture generates more than $405 billion each year, which is 27% of our gross domestic product. Despite this, the Labor Government continues to neglect this critical sector of the economy – which is also an important foundation of the Calare electorate. But while this campaign officially ends soon, the Coalition will continue to advocate for an environment where agriculture is sustainable and can prosper – helping farmers, help themselves. Congratulations to school and university students: With the rising of Parliament for the year I’ve been able to get out and about in the electorate much more and over the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to attend numerous school presentations ceremonies, both big and small. It’s wonderful to see the incredible achievements of our local students this year and congratulations to everyone who has received an award. I was particularly pleased to hand out several awards that I sponsored for special achievements. I also congratulate all those students who graduated from Charles Sturt University last week. This is a fantastic achievement and I wish you all the very best taking the next step into the workforce.

I would like to thank everybody for their support this year and as your Federal Member I look forward to ‘Caring for Calare’ in 2013 and delivering for regional Australia. I wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

To the editor... As the individual who compiled a letter to Cabonne Council on behalf of several concerned citizens of the Canowindra Community I wish to provide the reasons for the complaint which has been upheld by Council, to the point where the Canowindra Sports Trust have suspended use of recycled water on the Clyburn Oval. It is not just about smell. In my role as a health care practitioner, I have had many approaches by individuals with chronic, debilitating gastro-intestinal conditions. When I further investigated issues of water purification I became more concerned by some current practices, so on 25 October 2011 I wrote to the several Shire Councils and the Minister for Health, expressing concern about water quality, and was reassured that due to current practices of treatment and end-stage chlorination there were no contaminants in the water (parasites, bacteria etc), that would be harmful to health. This is at odds with reports from both Cornell University and Yale in the USA. Yale University studies show that most of us are being exposed to cancer-causing compounds created by household chemicals washed down the drain. Their researchers found evidence that common household items such as cleaners, shampoos and detergents are creating a chemical cocktail which when combined with chlorine compounds results in a new cancer causing agent called nitrosamine (NDMA), in water supplies that come from sewage treatment plants. Nitrosamines are known to be highly carcinogenic and have been especially linked to bladder cancers. A broad range of chemicals have been identified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Excreted pharmaceutical chemicals and their metabolite by-products found in recycled water raise similar issues. The Cornell University study confirmed the risk of diseases from inhalation of spray drift from sewerage includes the mycobacterium tuberculosis and enteric (ie gut) viruses via aerosol spread.. It wrote the Manual for Waste Water Workers in the USA in which it further states that salmonella, mycobacterium, ascaris (round worms) and enteric viruses are resistant to most treatment methods recommending high level personal respiratory protection and regular health screening for exposed workers, What about the exposed public? In its own fact sheet on recycled water (which can be viewed on the internet) the NSW Department of Health confirms concern about the role of chlorination in the development of colon and bladder cancer and agrees there is some evidence that people who are allergic to chlorine in general are likely to sustain some type of damage over the long term, possibly with some type of organ failure. The fact sheet also raises some concerns about the impact that water chlorination has on pregnancy, both in terms of causing stillbirths or birth defects. Cowra Council who also serve an area of Canowindra, uses chlorine as an end-stage water purifier, while swimming pools are another source of exposure. Chemical and pathogenic contaminants can remain in soil or on the ground for extended periods. Casual contact may not be harmful, but regular repeated exposures by sports people and school children increases the risks significantly, and how many people have obscure sickness which remains undiagnosed or is not responsive to conventional treatment, or have skin conditions from such contact? Why build a health walk in a contaminated area? Recycled sewerage waste cannot be considered as ‘purified’ or ‘safe’, and has no place in public access areas. I would be interested to see Council publish the results of detailed soil analysis from sites where recycled sewerage has been used. With over 80% of cancers now recognised to be linked to environmental and lifestyle factors, what studies have been done in the light of these new reports to ensure Councils prove they meet public safety standards, what chemicals are used in our local treatment, and how will long term risks now being identified be addressed? MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 17 December 2012

Forbes played host to a quick visit from NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli on Thursday. Mr Piccoli met with a range of interested stakeholders including representatives from Local Government and the teaching profession to discuss the NSW Government's reforms to education delivery and funding. Since assuming the education portfolio Adrian Piccoli has demonstrated a clear interest in furthering the education opportunities presented to regional communities like Forbes and was determined to visit the town to gauge a firsthand account of how the Government's education reforms have been re-ceived on the ground. I took the opportunity whilst in Forbes to visit the intersection of the Newell Highway and Oxford Street in Forbes to inspect the completion of a recent road work project. The NSW Government pro-vided $400,000 under the Principal Transport Routes Network Efficiency program for the project which was a key election commitment for the Dubbo electorate. Work included building turning lanes for both directions of Newell Highway traffic to turn into Oxford Street on the southern side of Forbes making it safer for all vehicles. Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance's visit to Dubbo last week came on the back of landmark disability reforms secured for the Dubbo electorate under an historic Heads of Agreement signed by the NSW and Australian Governments, through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Mr Constance was in town to open the new location of Challenge Disability Services at the Lourdes Hospital Building. Challenge Disability Services have a proud history in providing support to people with disability and their new facility will ensure that work can continue as they gear towards the NDIS. The organisation’s Day Program and Transition to Work services will be relocated to the new site along with the commencement of three new services including Challenge Children’s Service, Challenge Education Training Services and Challenge Respite. The NDIS Agreement will see the Com-monwealth invest $3.32 billion in 2018 for the scheme’s roll out in NSW with the State to contribute $3.13 billion. I was pleased to tour Parkes Court House last week to see where the long anticipated Audio Visual Link system (AVL) to be installed at the Parkes Court House early next year. The installation of AVL has long been recognised as a vital tool in streamlining court appearances and will undoubtedly assist in reducing the number of prisoner escorts in the future. AVL will allow more police to be deployed dealing with the apprehension of criminals rather than spending time with them in court. It's exciting to see work progressing on the town's new Police Station, the first floor of the state of the art facility is currently being constructed. The NSW Government allocated over $5 million in the 2012-2013 budget towards the completion of this $14 million project. The NSW Government is axing another nine green schemes as part of our efforts to do everything we can to drive down electricity prices. Our efforts are being overwhelmed by Federal Labor’s carbon tax and green schemes which add $270 to the average NSW household power bill. Since coming to office we have increased and introduced new rebates, capped dividends at or below Labor's fore-cast levels, scrapped Labor's solar bonus scheme, and we're working to remove unnecessary gold plating that pushes up power prices. In further good news for electricity customers, TransGrid will freeze its transmission revenue in 2013.

KARATE GOLD MEDAL Local martial arts student Brad Thompson competed in a karate tournament in Cowra on Sunday taking out gold. The tournament, based on an elimination format, saw Brad who is a second kyu brown belt, take on fighters in two rounds. One opponent was in his own height and weight range; the other a sub-stantially taller opponent, 20kgs heavier and a black belt, to take out top honours. Brad also took home a bronze medal in karate kata which is a pattern of detailed controlled moves. Congratulations Brad!

SWIMMING CLUB For the second last swimming club of 2012 there were 66 swimmers in the spoon heats and Dominic Smyth smashed his PB by 7 seconds. Also out of the spoon finals were Sammy Austin 5 seconds, and Jackson Stacey 3 seconds. In another close spoon final Michael Co-ady got his wish; his PB only lowered by 2 seconds in the heats and semi so in the final he took out the spoon in a time of 37 seconds. In his return to swimming club Michael Watt out flopped Regan Hughes and took home the belly flop certificate. Michael slotted in the older boys relay team who were again pipped at the post by lane 2. Collecting their pennants next week will be Curtis Bennett, Mila Gower, Joe Coady, Hannah Etty, Joe Besedic, Laura Flannery, Gabby Clements, Michael Coady, Sammy Austin and Bill Harrison. Swimming Club Swims this Friday and then has a week off before starting back again on Friday 4th January 2013. So all swimmers, parents and carers have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year.

CABONNE RECYCLES HEAPS Cabonne residents are on track to save enough energy through recycling to power almost 70 three-bedroom homes for a year. Mayor Ian Gosper said recycling continued to grow in the Shire, with more than 880 tonnes of materials expected to be recycled in 2012. “I really want to congratulate our residents for their efforts and encourage them to keep helping our environment,” he said. “The energy this saves would be the equivalent of providing electricity for 12 months to about 68 average three-bedroom houses. “It is also the equivalent of taking 105 cars permanently off the road.” Cr Gosper said that at the end of September, waste contractors JR Richards had processed more than 480 tonnes of materials from Cabonne into the Orange Materials Recycling Facility. In addition, Cabonne Council transported 178 tonnes from its six waste disposal depots, including 113 tonnes of paper and cardboard and 50 tonnes of glass. The Mayor said the recycling effort also significantly extended the lifespan of Cabonne’s tips. “This year we will save about 2300 cubic metres of material going into our landfills and over time this adds years to the lives of our tips,” he said.

So thanks to all the athletes, and their mums and dads or carers who make the effort to participate or spectate each week. Thank you to Johnny Lawrence for supplying and cooking the sausage sizzle, and Maree who helped cook the delicious barbecue, Nick Carne from Comprinting for his support over the year, and to the Canowindra Golf Club for providing the venue.

The Canowindra Phoenix

Would like to thank all the wonderful businesses in town for supporting us for another successful year.

Also, to our valued, wonderful readers who keep the spelling and grammar in check, thank you...you make this job so rewarding and worthwhile.

To all the contributors, those who write in, provide articles and photographs, your worth is immeasurable. Being a small team of two people, we don't have the resources to be everywhere for everyone. The Phoenix truly is a community effort, for the community.

Blessings and joy to you all this Christmas and for the next year.

We will be back 7 January 2013.

Ciao...Jo and Nick.
