THUMBS DOWN To the people breaching the law within town limits and operating heavy machinery at the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning, disturbing residential neighbours and spraying dirt and rubble over everyone’s washing, surely that reconstruc-tion of your dam wasn’t so important you felt the need to be this inconsiderate.

LettersDear Editor,As the owner of the shed crashed into by a passing truck on the 2nd February I would like to make some observations in regard to last week’s article. I have lived on this intersection for almost 39 years. In the early years there were fre-quent car accidents because giving right of way was tricky. Since then the Council has done extensive work and that intersection has been accident free for years. The island narrowing the road and the pe-destrian crossing were finished just before Xmas 2014. Many people observing the traf-fic, stated, “Well that’s an accident waiting to happen”. And it did, right in my backyard. So fortunate there was no damage to a per-son. I do not wish to comment on the cause, but I do know, not enough research was put into ‘the island’ decision. This is a rural farming community but ap-parently no one observed the variety of farming implements that need to negotiate this tricky intersection. They are very need-ful to the survival of our town, farming is what happens here. I am not so sure about the trucks how-ever and would like some clarification on why these huge trucks are coming through our rural town, passing 2 schools. The truck

in question was doing a Bathurst-Orange-Cowra-Parkes delivery. Nothing to do with Canowindra! They have their own beds, their own food so they do not contribute anything to this town. Why are they not doing a Ba-thurst-Orange-Parkes-Cowra delivery and staying on the highway? Even if they do go through Eugowra and Canowindra they would only be doing it once instead of twice on this route. But should they be doing it at all? I would particularly like to know, who moni-tors the size of these trucks (B-Doubles) on our road, are they in fact monitored at all? Also the routes that they use, are they ever investigated? Maybe it is time to find some new solutions so that our little town is kept safe. We need tourists (who spend money) not trucks.

Regards, Lois McCaffery

IMAGE: Troy Grant Andrew Gee and Kevin Humphries were among those who approved of the dam site

Could Cranky Rock Be New Dam Site? The Chairman of the Belubula Landhold-ers Association, Michael Payten, welcomed the announcement from the Minister Kevin Humphries that further investigations are to be carried out on the proposed Cranky Rock dam site on the Belubula River. The Association has favoured this site for the dam as it has a much greater catchment area than the Needles site due to it being be-low the entry of Canomodine Creek into the river; this creek is a major contributor to the flow into the Belubula River. A dam at Cranky Rock would also have a major flood mitiga-tion benefit for the Canowindra district. While the association is sympathetic to land holders whose places may be acquired, the advantages to the region will be extensive. Michael Payten says that the dam would provide much greater water security for ir-

rigators on the Belubula River, which would lead to further development of enterprises along the river such as dairies and inten-sive vegetable production. The provision of assured water supply to the region would undoubtedly enhance the prospects of de-velopment in the region. These benefits would extend to irrigators down the Lachlan River system. However irrigators will not be the only beneficiaries as a new dam would be part of a major water infrastructure up-grade that would benefit towns and villages throughout the central west. Tourism in Canowindra and the region would benefit greatly from a dam 20 times the size of Carcoar Dam if the proposed dam is built to its 700gL potential. Please ring if you have any further interest or enquiries, Michael Payten 6344 3237 or 0428 443 209.

Canowindra High Student Awarded Scholarship

It was a great day for local women last Satur-day as over 100 people attended the Austral-ian Federation of Graduate Women- Central West Branch Dinner in Cowra. The dinner in-cluded the presentation of the $2000 Cowra- Canowindra Scholarship, which was awarded to Emily Price by Sue Brown, the co-ordinator of the scholarship program. Emily is the daughter of Lisa and Matthew Price who moved with their family to Cowra five years ago. Emily studied at St Raphael’s and Canowindra High School and has applied herself in all disciplines at school, showing ambition and motivation. She has also in-volved herself in the community, represent-ing her school as Vice-Captain and excelling at local activities such as athletics and swim-ming. Emily achieved a Diamond level in the NSW’s Premiers Sporting Challenge and ref-erees junior school sports. Her involvement in agriculture saw her attend the Generation 2050 – Project Feed the World conference in Armidale in 2013 and she has helped at the local show in the cattle section. Emily will go to Charles Sturt University to study a Bach-

elor of Agricultural Science at Wagga. In her acceptance speech Emily paid tribute to her teachers and her family and noted that she is the first member of her immediate family to study beyond year 10 and attend university. The guest speaker for the evening was for-mer Canowindra girl, Jennie Beard, who is the founder and director of Polaris Coaching. Her address entitled “Leading a Purposeful Life – how to design the life you love” high-lighted the importance of making the most of your innate gifts and talents. Jennie has helped many people through career transi-tions as well as women seeking to balance work and family life, a thing which still is sub-ject to bias in some workplaces. At the conclusion of the evening, the Presi-dent Marianne Payten thanked everyone for attending and noted that it was wonderful to see so many current High School and Uni-versity students in attendance. The money raised from the night will be invested for next year’s scholarship. New members are always welcome to join the AFGW-Central West by contacting Marianne on 6342 6716.

My House My Home

How to make your home look hot on the property market...If you’re looking to move to pastures new in 2015, preparing your home for viewers is very important. Similar to dating, looks make a strong first impression…you wouldn’t go on a date looking your worst so why would you allow potential buyers into your house when it’s not picture perfect? A little effort can ensure your property is sold faster and can even add value to the home

De-clutter – but don’t depersonalizeThose kitsch ornaments your great aunt got you from Spain that you’ve hated for twen-

ty years but felt obliged to cram onto your overflowing mantle? The time has come to let them go, any excess stuff you have ac-cumulated can be put in storage or even bet-ter, given to a friend as a cheap Christmas present! (perhaps not a close friend though) Don’t get rid of so much that it looks like a hotel however, there is fine line between tidy yet homely and generic and sterile.

A fresh lick of paint goes a long wayYour walls will have new life breathed into them with a quick brush of a new colour. Go for neutrals to make your home seem lighter and bigger. Neutrals are also a crowd pleaser, it’s easy for buyers to move in im-mediately to a cream room than a bright lime green room. If you’re a colour lover, one wall painted in a bright colour paired with 3 walls

of soft colours can work well, especially in liv-ing rooms. Don’t forget to give the front door a fresh coat of lacquer, this is one of the first things buyers will see.

Fix and cleanHoles in walls, broken fly screens and cracked tiles can all create an unsavoury taste in buy-ers mouths. They want to be able to move straight in without making changes so try and fix any minor repairs before viewing day. Clean everything until it sparkles! Imagine you’re in an advert for Mr Muscle, no more limescale! While you’re focusing on the house don’t ne-glect the garden, trim back any overgrown bushes, clean the patio furniture and give the lawn a mow. While this wont add value to your home it definitely improves the aesthetic.

Light and airyWall mirrors are a good trick for making a room look bigger and lighter. For dark hall-ways of small rooms the addition of a mirror creates an illusion of the space being larger. Light is important, keep blinds and curtains open and windows shiny. If you don’t have windows in some rooms make up for lack of natural light with lamps and ceiling lights, eliminating dark corners.

ShowtimeFinally, let the estate agent you’ve chosen show the property, they’ve got the gift of the gab after all. It’s their job to know the right things to say, highlight the pros and downplay any cons. With a bit of luck, you’ll have the house sold in no time and can’t start looking for your new dream home!

How to make your house go from smelling funky to fab...How many times have you headed home af-ter a hard day’s work, opened the kitchen door and spent the next five minutes walk-ing round with your nose stuck out trying to locate the culprit of the funky smell like some sort of smelling detective? You sniff, you search and you’re stumped. Your house can be full of all sorts of things that can make it smell anywhere from funky to downright rank, especially in the summer when the heat can help things fester that much quicker. When an area of your house smells bad it’s tempting to Oust until the can is empty or light a scented candle but these merely cover up the smell temporarily with-out getting rid of the underlying stink. So if something smells fishy around here and it may not be a fish, try these easy, natu-ral and homemade remedies to help deodor-ize and freshen your home for good!

Simmer Pot Air Freshener For a long lasting aroma that permeates the entire home, use this simmer pot recipe. Per-fect for winter to create a warm atmosphere or in the summer to control the sweaty smells that seem to emanate from everywhere. Mix and match your ingredients to suit you:•1 orange, sliced•1 lemon, sliced•2 cinnamon sticks

•4 whole cloves•1 bay leaf, fresh if possiblePut these ingredients into a slow cooker with around 3 or 4 cups of water, set on low and let it simmer all day. Leave the lid off to let the vapours into the air.

Homemade Gel Air FreshenerThis one is good for clumsy husbands, row-dy kids and crazy pets as this air freshener is in gel form so it can’t spill! You will need:•20 drops of your favorite essential oils•4 packets of plain gelatin•2 Tablespoons salt•Water•Empty glass food jars with screw-on lidsBring 1 cup of water to a boil, remove it from heat, and gently stir in the essential oils and the salt. Continue stirring while carefully sprinkling in the gelatin. Once dissolved, slowly stir in 1 cup of cold water. Do not stir this vigorously or it will foam up and create a cloudy gel. Carefully pour gelatin mixture into each jar and sit for around 2 days or until set. These will smell strong at first but will mellow with time. When you want to use one of your gel air fresheners poke some holes in the lid and decorate to give a more personal touch. To make things colourful, add some food dye to the boiling water!

Easy to make and natural home deodorisers are the way forward. Better for your family by breathing in fewer nasty chemicals and you can keep your house smelling sweet without spending a fortune! We’re off home to give these a try!

MY LIFE’S JOURNEY – MEMORIES MOMENTS

Robert Bruce Stone has compiled a journal for you to record all your personal data. This is by far the most comprehensive journal that we have seen. A superbly crafted genealogy book which allows you to enter and record every as-pect of your life’s history and family tree. As an ex-policeman Robert recognized the need for a book that could record a person’s personal details but be easily found when required such as after a fire, flood, break-in or a health cri-sis. This journal has space to record important information such as financial details, medical history, your will information, contacts if sick or pass away, power of attorney, or even fu-neral arrangements. These details are all vital information that is often not mentioned within families or may be forgotten in times of stress. To have it all recorded in one book can make it easier for your relatives and friends to help you when needed. It is a beautifully presented book in a green hardback cover, or you can get it in a slipcase which would make an excellent present to en-courage others to record all of their life’s de-tails. Available at Collins Booksellers Orange as a single copies are $24.95, single slipcase $29.95 or double slipcase $50.

IMAGE: A match payed last year

Over the past quarter of a century the com-munity polo club of Millamolong has been able to showcase top quality polo from its ground along the Belubula Way. The club has a proud heritage, raising over $230,000 for local and international charities and be-ing the first polo club in the Southern Hemi-sphere to host an official all ladies interna-tional. Join in and celebrate 25 years of the sport in our community at the Millamolong Polo John Davis VOLVO Carnival on March 14th and 15th. There will be the usual heart stopping polo all weekend, with plenty of country glamour, fun and frivolity plus by go-ing along you will be supporting and raising money for 3 charities – Riding for Disabled

Orange (RDA), Camp Quality and the Faraja Orphanage in Tanzania. There will be bike polo, a car vs horse race, a NSW v Victoria match and the ever popular kid’s tent. For more info visit: www.millamolong.com.au If you still need convincing, here’s an extract from a polo inspired poem in honour of Banjo Paterson week by L A Ashton…It was somewhere west of Sydney, in the Central West dry scrubThat they formed an institution called the Millamolong Polo ClubThey were tough and hardy horseman, who as boys had learned to ride,And they’d turned their hand to playing polo, down by the Belubula river side...
