The inaugural NASAA (National Associa- tion for Sustainable Agriculture Australia) Certified Organic Wine of the Year Awards attracted around 100 entries, and were open to Australian wines that have organic certifi- cation. The Award was overseen by some of Aus- tralia’s most respected organic winemak- ers; Troy Kalleske from the Barossa Valley’s Kalleske Wines and Michael Paxton from Pax- ton Wines in McLaren Vale. The top scoring wines were then re-judged by the panel with the 2012 Pig in the House Cabernet Sauvignon awarded top honours. “The wines are made at the Windowrie winery by Anthony D’Onise. Anthony has a natural respect for the organic winemaking process. This tasting exemplifies that the organic fruit coming from our vineyards and also the Cowra region as a whole is some of the highest quality in the country – that’s amazing!” said owner and viticulturalist Ja- son O’Dea. “To hear the Pig had won this award was a fantastic honour,” commented Jason. “This year we are celebrating ten years of organic certification and an award recognising the commitment and hard work involved in growing and crafting organic wine is both humbling and very welcome.” The Pig in the House offers a full range of award winning organic wines compris- ing, Pig in the House Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. LettersGood Progress with Canowindra’s Community Bank ProjectThe past fortnight has seen a dramatic im-provement in the prospects for the estab-lishment of a community bank in Canowin-dra. 169 people have now pledged a total of more than $420,000, well over half way towards the $750,000 target set by Bendigo Bank. Each dollar pledged will become a tradeable share in the company which will be registered and commence banking opera-tions once a thorough feasibility study and business plan have been completed. The Community Bank in Boorowa which was established in the same way 15 years ago, is now returning over $100,000 per year from profits into local projects nomi-nated by Boorowa residents via the local bank board of directors. Other significant amounts are directed to sponsorships and regional promotions. The Boorowa bank which is open 5 1/2 days per week, em-ploys 3 local staff full-time and has several part-timers as well. Once the Canowindra Community Bank has been established and operating for a few years, shareholders can expect to receive a reasonable dividend on their investment. Boorowa shareholders re-ceived a healthy 15% yield last year. But the biggest winner will be the Canowindra dis-trict community which will be justly proud of having its own bank. Boorowa Pharmacist Sue Corcoran, who was a member of the Boorowa Community Bank’s steering committee 15 years ago will be addressing an informal meeting at Finn’s Store in Gaskill Street, Canowindra on Thursday 26th July to tell the great success

story about the Boorowa Community Bank. Anyone interested to hear Sue Corcoran and to ask questions, whether they have currently pledged financial support or not, will be most welcome to come for a glass of wine and nib-bles at 7 for 7.30 pm. Our community needs this bank…and the bank needs your support! Come and join us on Thursday 26th July to show your support and learn more about the project.

Yours sincerely, Richard Statham

Snippets... Initially, the disabled parking sign was placed at the front of the bus bay for a specialised bus. However, when the bus no longer came to the school, that spot became available to anyone with a disabled sticker. The disabled parking at the front of the school is still usea-ble, but only to one vehicle at a time, as there is simply not enough space for more disabled parking. Council has placed another disabled park at the back of the school.

Crime In Canowindra - There was a break, enter and steal on Friday morning at about 3.22am, at Kinsela Farm Supplies in Canow-indra. The unknown offenders entered the property by forcing open the rear door. The Police are currently investigating the break and enter and stated that the offenders ran-sacked the property, and stole an amount of cash. Once the alarm triggered, the offenders fled the property and the owners were alert-ed immediately. Owner of Kinsela’s Richard Kinsela stated “We are currently upgrading our security system by implementing cam-eras and security lights so this won’t happen again. And I recommend all businesses in Canowindra to do the same”. If you have any information about this incident please con-tact Cowra Police Station on 6341 5099 or Crime Stoppers. Please help stop the crime in Canowindra.

No Stopping - There have been some changes to the parking around the Canow-indra Primary School. The Tilga Street Level 1 entrance where the section in front of the bus bay has gone back to ‘No Stopping’. There had been several reports of dangerous incidents with drivers turning across the un-broken lines on the crest of the hill and then backing across the footpath while children were walking to the front gates. It’s danger-ous with cars coming south on Tilga and pull-ing in with children unsighted behind a bus until the last second. Principal of the Canowindra Public School Eric Toole said “We looked at alternatives to make it safe, but because the path is such an odd configuration at that spot, going back to ‘No Stopping’ was the best option. I realise this may be a little inconvenient for those who use this spot regularly, but we decided to trade off convenience for safety”. The best pick up and drop off spot is at the back of the school in Belmore Street. There is also an area behind the bus bay, below the crossing that is good for parking. Although it involves a little walk it does not involve crossing the road.

Hi guys & welcome back. Last time we touched on the fact that people with chron-ic back pain tend to re-injure themselves through basic activities. These basic move-ments are things we do every single day without any issues; like picking up a pen off the floor, sneezing, lifting and twisting just to name a few. So WHY does this happen? Why can you do the same thing 1000 times with no problem and then all of a sudden you’re in pain? One reason is because of poor func-tional control. But what controls your func-tion? The same thing that controls almost all function in your body; your nervous system. When your brain doesn’t receive the proper messages or the messages from your brain aren’t received to the muscles correctly, we get dysfunction. Movement then becomes poor and not executed with precision lead-ing to injury from basic, trivial movements. A properly functioning nervous system is a fun-damental requirement to function properly. Chiropractic enhances the same neurologi-cal function required to perform movement efficiently & effectively. That’s why most people feel amazing while under chiropractic care. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call for a chat.

When visiting other surrounding towns it can sometimes be difficult to know where to go for a freshly ground coffee and an appetizing meal. With an array of choices it can be over-whelming and sometimes disappointing if you don’t choose wisely. With many locals visit-ing Orange and Cowra for shopping, seeing medical practitioners or just visiting friends and family it’s important to know where to look for an enjoyable meal and coffee. Often the best cafés are hidden in a quaint street, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. If you don’t know the surroundings you could sadly miss out on what might become your favourite destination. Simply Nile Café is one of those hidden destinations that provide their customers with an escape from their busy lifestyles. Located at 49 Nile Street Orange, they have easy accessible parking and disabled access. When Frank was asked why he chose to have a café off the main street he said ”It allows the customers to have some peace and quiet in our spacious courtyard as well as provid-ing them with easy parking”. With a focus on fresh local produce they serve quality home-made meals. This month’s specials are pan-cakes with banana and butterscotch sauce, rustic vegetable frittata (which is gluten free), creamy mushroom soup and pasta provencal served with chili and chorizo. If you are looking for a chef quality meal then Café Latte is for you. Located in Orange’s

CBD, at173 Summer St. The cosy and con-temporary café has 2 qualified chefs in the kitchen that will be sure to satisfy your taste buds with their restaurant quality meals, at a reasonable price. Over the past few weeks Café Latte has been hosting themed nights. Their upcoming theme is a Western night on the 2nd of August. Experience an old saloon bar and be taken back in time. Bookings are essential as Aaron said, “The themed nights have been very well attended with the last themed night being booked out!’ So be sure to get in quick. This week’s special at Café Latte are: hot and spicy chicken burger and pepper beef potpie. They also have a soup and quiche of the day specials. If you’re out and about in Cowra and unde-cided where to go for a morning tea why not try Breakout Brasserie for some delightful homemade cakes and slices. Sit out under the vines in their alfresco dining area while enjoying some fresh local produce. With their relaxed courtyard feel and freshly roasted coffee it makes for the perfect haven. Open for breakfast and morning tea Monday to Saturday and lunches throughout the week. When you’re travelling to Orange or Cowra next don’t be disappointed or overwhelmed by the many venues. Instead stop on into Café Latte, Simply Nile Café and Breakout Brasserie to satisfy all your needs.

Balloon Challenge Wins Selection For Inland Tourism Awards

The Canowindra Balloon Challenge is on its way to more possible state-wide glory and marketing publicity with a place in the finals of this year’s Inland Tourism Awards. And we’ll know in just under three weeks’ time whether the annual balloon spectacular has beaten tourism attractions and projects from five NSW inland regions to go through again to the state finals. The balloon challenge won the silver medal in the NSW awards last year, and committee stalwart Jan Kerr reckons this could well be the year it takes out the top prize. “The inland awards are open to tourism at-tractions literally anywhere west of the Blue Mountains,” Jan says. “To reach the finals against these five re-gions alone is a triumph for the balloon chal-lenge and Canowindra. “But once in the state finals we’re up against the huge tourism structure of Sydney and major coastal venues.”

The winner of the Inland Tourism Awards will be announced at a dinner in Griffith on Saturday July 26. Win or lose, the occasion will coincide with other efforts by the Balloon Challenge Com-mittee to boost its profile as a spectacular tourism event throughout the inland region. According to Chairman Arthur Falconer the committee is planning to work with the Canowindra Business Chamber to come up with “what we can do better for the region and what we can get out of it in terms of lo-cal business. “The idea will be to not just attract more regional visitors to the balloon event but also get them into the Canowindra main street and shop while they’re here. “We’ll be persuading them to make the Balloon Glow, for example, a Fun Day, rath-er than simply a fun couple of hours in the evening.”

Canowindra Gives The Thumbs Up to New Dam Proposal

The MP for Calare sat down to air news, views and concerns with about 10 Canow-indra people, including Michael Payten and David Cullane of the Belubula Landholders Group, which is on the committee of Lachlan Valley Water. “We made it clear we’re certainly in favour of the Needles Dam project,” Michael said. “But we’d also like a feasibility study of the Cranky Rock area, which has more catchment. “However we’re not taking a strong posi-tion. These were not formal or official talks,

just a chat.” As Michael Payten points out: “The Car-coar Dam is catching only about 10 percent of the water that’s available in the region.” On the other hand, the Needles site has a 532-square-kilometre catchment available, a lot more creeks flowing into it, and a pro-jected capacity of 90,000 mega litres. “It was great to catch up with people in Canowindra,” John said, “and I thank them for making the effort.”

Luigi’s Freedom Ride is a wholly charming, sweetly funny story of one young good-hearted Italian man. It’s about life, bicycles, the joy of the journey and the simple beauty of a life well-lived. Luigi is a young Italian boy growing up in Tuscany in the 1920s, dreaming of cowboys and adventure, when a young Englishman gives him his first bicycle, thus sparking a lifelong passion. When World War II begins, Luigi enlists with the Bersaglieri, the Italian Army Cycling Corps (naturally), before unex-pectedly finding himself fighting alongside the Partisans. Despite encountering great sorrow and tragedy, Luigi’s zest for life re-mains undiminished, and his next adventure sees him cycling through the Holy Land, Turkey and Sri Lanka before finding an unex-pected home - and an extraordinary surprise - in Australia. Highly recommended, especially for a holi-day read. Buy a copy of this book from Col-lins Booksellers Orange for a chance to win the bicycle on display in the window.

IMAGE: Mick Watt First Grade Players Player

First GradeCanowindra vs. CargoThe Canowindra Tigers were extremely proud after their very close game with the Cargo Heelers as they defeated them 13 - 12. The stakes were high as both teams went head to head to fight it out for a win. Canowindra applied fantastic pressure to Cargo as the Heelers fumbled to the Tigers defence line twice which enabled Matt Mclean and Aaron Earsman to both score run away tries as they grabbed the ball off Cargo’s mistakes and ran

the field to score. Once again Canowindra’s extremely strong defence line was in action as Cargo gave away a penalty to the Tigers just out from the posts which gave Matt Mclean the perfect opportunity to kick a 2 point penalty. Cargo came back in the second half scor-ing another two tries to even the score board to 12 all. This is when Canowindra new what they had to do in order to make a win. With only a few minutes left, Rob Burn took the initiative to attempt for a field goal which

Trades and Services

was successful. Another nail biting game as the Tigers were able to push through for their fourth consecutive win over a team in a higher position on the ladder. Cargo are a very experienced team with players that have played together over a long number of years, whereas the Tigers have the youngest First Grade side that haven’t had as much experience playing together. A few returned players in the last few weeks has also made a great impact on the team as the older players have the experience behind them to help push the rest of the team to victory. This week’s Players Player went to a Youth League Player Mick Watt on the wing as he caught every ball that was kicked his way and ran it up to make ground for the Tigers. Out-standing to work to Mick as he really fought with his team for a win over the Heelers. The Youth League players that back up for First Grade always seem to push it up a notch as they want to do their First Grade team proud. Notable mention to Matt Mclean for scoring a runaway try and for kicking a perfect 40 - 20, also to Aaron Earsman for his second consecutive runaway try.

This Week’s GameThis weekend on Sunday the 13th of July all three grades for Canowindra will travel out to Grenfell to verse them on their home grounds.

League TagCanowindra vs. Cargo, Sunday 6th JulyThe Canowindra Tigresses were short players which made an impact on their game with the Cargo Sheelers as they split points to 12 all. This is the tightest game that has ever been played between the Tigresses and Sheelers, as Canowindra were able to hold themselves to not let Cargo defeat them. Great work to all of the girls who played on Sunday as they had an outstanding game under the given circumstances. Their coach Michael French said “An under strength team cost us against

a team we would normally easily beat, al-though we will take one point and move on to preparing for Grenfell”. The Tigresses will regain a full team next week and are looking forward to preparing for a win. This week’s Player’s Player went to Krystal Coker for her outstanding game, she really stepped up to the mark and helped control the team. Great work to Jess Coker for scoring the first try for Canowindra and to Kath Davis for scoring the second try.

Rugby UnionCanowindra vs. Codobolin, Saturday 5th July The opening half hour of footy saw both teams go from one end of the field to the other without either threating the try lines to much. From the sideline you could see who-ever was to score first was going to get their sails up and make it a lot easier to take the points. With Ed Price taking an intercept, it was a sure thing he would open the account for the men in blue, however he was called back for being off side. Condo took the op-portunity and turned it into a 5 pointer of their own in the next few phases of play. The teams went into half time with Condo leading 7-0.

The second half was one-way traffic for Condo in the first ten minutes. Even the re-turn of “The King” Pete Middleton could not spur the boys onto a victory. Though Pete was unlucky not to get a 5 pointer in his first game of the year. Stu Gavin seemed as though he got his first meat pie of the year but was short of the line. Soon after the Py-thons leading try scorer showed how it was done with Toddy Wyburn crashing over for a consolation try towards the end of the game. A lot of the boys dug in well with the front rowers of Dude Williams, Stu Gavin and Jacob Baker all having great games against a huge pack from Condo. In the backs the experi-ence of Craig McKenzie and Ed Price helped the young talent of Tim Middleton and Jamie Grant get around the paddock. McClintock’s best and fairest points for the day went to 3 points and player’s player to Jack Beath, 2 points went to Jack Knight and 1 point each went to Dan Bowd and Luke Watt. This weekend Canowindra play host to Blayney at 315pm at the oval.

Canowindra Men’s Golf NewsOn Sunday 6th July a 2 Person Ambrose Med-ley was played. Winners on the day were Paul Jeffress and Malcom Millar with 71 off the stick nett 63.75.
