Our Patronal Feast

This weekend in the Church we celebrate our parish namesake, The Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. Each year, this solemnity provides our parish to come together and celebrate what makes us one and united as Catholics, the Body and Blood of Christ of which we all belong. This year the celebration has a special meaning for this weekend as we were joined by Bishop McElroy as he ordained two young men to the transitional diaconate, a step before they are ordained the priesthood next summer. Making it even more special is the fact that one of our parishioners, now Deacon Michael O’Connor was ordained.

As part of our celebration this weekend, Deacon O’Connor will be the Deacon of the Mass for the first time at the Sunday 9 am Mass, where he will also be preaching for the first time as a Deacon. Following the Mass, we will be having a small reception in the hall to congratulate him and assure him of our prayers for him as he continues in preparation for his priestly ordination next year.

In addition to welcoming Deacon O’Connor, I wanted to share with you some history on this great celebration of the Church. In 1246, Bishop Robert de Thorete of the Belgina diocese of Liège, at the suggestion of St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon (also in Belgium), convened a synod and instituted the celebration of the feast. From Liège, the celebration began to spread, and, on September 8, 1264, Pope Urban IV issued the papal bull "Transiturus," which established the Feast of Corpus Christi as a universal feast of the Church, to be celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday.

At the request of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas Aquinas composed the office (the official prayers of the Church) for the feast. His office is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the traditional Roman Breviary (the official prayer book of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours), and it is the source of the famous Eucharistic hymns Pange Lingua Gloriosi and Tantum Ergo Sacramentum.

For centuries after the celebration was extended to the universal Church, the feast was also celebrated with a eucharistic procession, in which the Sacred Host was carried throughout the town, accompanied by hymns and litanies. The faithful would venerate the Body of Christ as the procession passed by. In recent years, this practice has almost disappeared, though some parishes still hold a brief procession around the outside of the parish church. Here at Corpus Christi we will be having a procession inside the church at the end of all of our Masses.

Happy Feast Day!!!

Why Should I Register in the Parish?

Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. Membership requires signing up and formally enrolling yourself in the parish. But it is also more than just filling out some forms. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of a parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a parish, what benefits and obligations the community has to the archdiocese, and how many Masses and programs are planned and scheduled.

If you are not yet registered, we invite you to take the first step. You can obtain a Registration Form from our website (www.corpuschristicatholic.org) or the Parish Office, then you can bring it back and deposit in the basket with your Sunday donation or to the Parish Office. Can’t wait to meet you!

Body and Blood of Christ - The focus of today’s feast is the total self -giving of Jesus. The bishops’ stewardship pastoral reminds us that “the glory and the boast of Christian stewards lie in mirroring, however poorly, the stewardship of Jesus Christ, who gave and still gives all He has and is, in order to be faithful to God’s will and carry through to completion His redemptive stewardship of human beings and their world.”

GOSPEL MEDITATION -June 3, 2018 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

In our modern times, symbol can seem to have lost its value. The most recognizable "signs" are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don't do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don't deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier.

On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God's providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. "This is my blood of the covenant." At the time of the first Passover -- the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians -- the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross.

Christ's Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It's a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes -- throughout the centuries and until the end of time -- the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always.

Sharing the Gospel with the

Kids

Jesus broke the bread and said, "This is

my body." Then he held up the cup of wine

and said, "This is my blood." During Mass the priest

says the same words: "This is my body. This is my

blood." Through the prayer, the bread and wine are

changed into the body and blood of Christ. When you

eat the body and blood of Christ, it gives you the

power to say "No," to evil.

Prayer

Jesus, please bless everything I eat and drink.

Something to Draw

Draw Jesus and his apostles at a table sharing bread

and wine.

Daily Prayer for Priest

I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priest laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests; For your lonely and desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me; All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way (especially……………….....) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity.
