JULY 19, 2020 W E L C O M E Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Mission of our parish is to serve our neighbors with Jesus, to pray in faith with Jesus, and to teach as His Church with Jesus, so “that all may have more abundant life.” (John 10:10). The Word of God, the Sacraments, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are the instruments and standards of this work of evangelization and faith formation.

Please note that the Czech Mass will resume on Sunday, July 26 at 10:30, but in the Institute, not the lower church.

Dear Friends and Parishioners: So far the re-opening of our church has gone pretty smoothly. Here are some observations including a few answers to questions some have asked. Our Mass attendance was higher than I had expected it would be, and it grew the second week, as you might expect after a holiday weekend. The first two weekends respectively reached 30% & 34% of our normal average. I think that’s a very good start. See the attendance chart elsewhere in the bulletin. People have been very cooperative about wearing masks and maintaining social distance. Likewise, the response of people volunteering to clean has been heartening. We could use more volunteers to be greeters at the doors as people enter and leave. The process of receiving communion is going smoothly. We just have to work on getting that single line coming down the aisle. The first week I had to celebrate a second Spanish Mass in the lower church in Spanish for the “overflow” upstairs. By the second week we had the TV down there working and Mass went smoothly, with both levels practically full. No overflow was needed yet for the other Masses. We have yet to "connect the gym" for Mass, which I think we will need as the summer progresses. Joe Haufe, assisted by Neida, Brendon & Chin, has been tremendously helpful in carrying out the camera and TV installation at all three locations. I hear that some other parishes don’t pre-register. That’s their decision. We are following the strong recommendation from the Diocese and which is in use in most dioceses in the U.S. The purpose is to avoid overcrowding the church and preventing any difficulties at the doors. I want the greatest possible protective measures we can implement until such time as the danger of contagion has subsided. We may adjust the process as the need requires. Some have asked what we do with the registration lists. The answer is: I shred them after the Masses. First sacrament celebrations were put on “hold” because of the pandemic, but we now have diocesan permission to move ahead with them. By the time you read this we should have completed both First Penance and First Communion for our CCD/ religious education youngsters. We also will be celebrating Sacraments of Initiation for adults in two ceremonies at the end of July. Youth Confirmation will take place with Bishop Cisneros in early August. All these liturgies will be conducted in the same way as all parish Masses: with masks, distancing and pre-registration.

Other notes: -- We had two tremendous floods in the lower sacristy last week, each of which required over three hours of bailing water. (Thank you Joe H., Chin, Fr Peter, Martha M. & the Spanish volunteer daily cleaning crew, who happened to be around when they happened.) It seems to be the result of some work Con Ed did. -- Our fourth "final Inspection" with Con Ed will be on Monday July 20, after 20 months of partial electrical service in the church. -- Our custodial staff and volunteers have been busy with a variety of necessary jobs: painting the gym, re-freshing the Institute basement rooms, and more. Likewise the upper sacristy renovation is nearing comple-tion. (All done within NYS limits.) -- We bid Brendon a fond farewell as he leaves us for some well-deserved personal time before reporting to St Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, PA, on August 12.

My dear sisters and brothers, I continue to give thanks to God as I reflect on the incredible blessing my pastoral year was while being assigned to your beautiful parish at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As I prepare to embark on my final two years of priestly formation at the Seminary of St. Vincent in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to all of you who have walked with me , supported and encouraged me, and prayed with and for me over the past twelve months. Your faith, and dedication to the Church is an inspiration to me. Thank you to the many parish groups who welcomed and invited me to participate in their gatherings throughout the year! My thanks also to the staff in the Rectory who made me feel at home and worked with me on the various projects including the Ministry Fair, First Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and the many smaller projects throughout the year. I'd also like to thank the priests (and Seminarian Chin!) who I had the joy of living with. It is very rare to live in a Rectory of eight! I am grateful to them for their example of priestly service and their love for Christ and the Church. Finally I'd like to thank our pastor, Msgr. Sean Ogle. Although I've known Monsignor since I was a young boy serving the German Mass at St. Matthias, you really don't get to know a priest until you are assigned with him. His willingness to give me the freedom to interact with and partici-pate in the various meetings and parish groups was a gift, his encouragement while working on various projects, and his pastoral advice when encountering any given situation is something I will take with me - and Monsignor’s knowledge of the history of the parish, the Diocese of Brooklyn, and life in general was of great interest! Although I wish to be with each and everyone of you as often as possible, both time and dis-tance makes that very difficult over the next two years. As I now focus all of my efforts on aca-demics and the program of priestly formation at St. Vincent Seminary, I invite you to remain in touch with me as you are able by reaching out to me at: [email protected]. I pray that the Lord may bless each and everyone of you, and that our Blessed Mother may place her mantle of protection over us all during this time of pandemic. Thank you so much, and please pray for me!

Sincerely, Brendon Harfmann
