    ISSUE 25, September 11 2015

Last week I began a series of articles that focuses on our belief statements at BIFS. The topic of my first article, discussed our central belief that our students are to be at the center of all that we do at BIFS. This week, I wouldlike to ask the important question, Whose responsibility is it to educate our students? Parents? Teachers? Orwhom?

    Whole SchoolEducation a Shared Responsibility

    2

Research says all of the above! It actually is acommunitys responsibility. Students learn in manydifferent locations from a wide variety of people. Parentsand community members contribute to the attitudes, expectations and aspirations of their children. Theexpertise of teachers in the classroom and formaleducation settings not only contributes to thedevelopment of knowledge but also to important criticalthinking and transdisciplinary skills important for thefuture. Additionally, these experiences also support thedevelopment of our students capacities such as self-regulation, self-confidence, resilience, determination, passion and future aspirations. The bottom line is thateducation is a shared responsibility and teachers, coaches, community members, parents, friends and studentsall play unique but complimentary roles in assisting each student to thrive!

If you look in our guiding statements at what we believe, you will see that our second declaration is, Educationis the shared responsibility of our entire community. What do you notice about this statement? Two importantpoints come to the forefront for me. The first is that the education of our students is a shared responsibility. It isnot just up to the teachers or the school but rather we all have a stake and a duty in contributing to theeducation of each of our students. Secondly, this responsibility is shared by the entire community. To me, thismeans that our non-teaching staff, our contractors, our parents, and the broader Busan community all have animportant and critical role to play as members of our community in the shaping of our students. Thanks for yourvaluable contributions to this important endeavor!

Head Lice AlertThere has been a case of head lice in the Elementary School. Please check your childs hair and scalp carefully.

Find a comfortable well-lit area. Wash hair. Apply conditioner and leave in (do not rinse). Use a fine toothed lice comb to check the hair.

Check the hair from the scalp to the end of the hair strand. First look at the hair at the back of the neck, behind the ears and above the forehead. Then, check the rest of the head.

You are looking for live lice. They are the size of a sesame seed and are tan, brown or gray. If you find a louse, check all household members. Treat only those who have lice (Head Lice Shampoo or Wet

    combing)

If you do not find lice, it does not mean that your child does not have lice or that he/she will not get it.Check again in a few days. Let the school know if your child has head lice.

Head lice are not major public health concern because they do not spread illness or disease. Head lice can beitchy and uncomfortable. When head lice are found treatment should begin immediately. After one medicaltreatment (special head lice shampoo) has been given, student will be allowed to return to school. For furtherinformation, please contact the school nurse ([email protected]).

    11

In schools it is common for illness and head lice to occur. The sooner the nurse is notified of a communicable illness or a case of headlice, the more quickly she can move to help stop the spread. Below is the section excerpted from the Parent Handbook.

When to Keep Your Child at HomeTo prevent spread of contagious disease and to enable a student to receive the rest needed for recovery, please keep your child home until he/she has been free of any of the following symptoms for at least 24 hours.

Fever : 37.8C (100F) or higher Cold : green or yellow drainage from nose, nasal or chest congestion and cough. Severe cough : persistent or uncontrolled Diarrhea/Vomiting : vomiting twice within 24 hours, persistent diarrhea. Rashes : present of a skin rash especially with other symptoms (fever, itching, bumps); known rash should be identified by a physician before child can return to school.

Communicable DiseasesIf your child has been given a medical order to stay home and rest because of a contagious disease they must not attend school until they bring a physicians statement indicating they are able to return without risk to their own or others health.

The following are the most common illnesses that need to be reported to the school:Flu Chicken Pox Conjunctivitis (Pink eye) Impetigo Stomach flu (Gastroenteritis) MeaslesMumps Hepatitis A MeningitisHand Foot & Mouth Disease

Head LiceIf a case of head lice is identified, the parent will be informed and the student will be sent home. This allows for treatment to take place as quickly as possible. The student can return to school once treatment has been given (usually the next day) but is required to be checked in nurses office that day.

    and everyone had fun.

The students were so well behaved that I didn't have to have any conversations about discipline or deal with anyissues. If you are the parent of any of these 38 children, I want to tell you that you did an incredible job ofraising them the right way. Thanks for allowing me to spend time with your wonderful children. If you ever getsick of them and need to send them away for a weekend, they are welcome in my home!

    Nate SwensonMiddle School Principal

I like to travel with students. I get a chance to knowthem in a different light, I can build relationships that willhelp with difficult conversations in the future, and wecan build a trust that will allow them to come to me withany concerns they have. These things make me better atmy job.

This past weekend I went with the 8th grade students toNamhae Island. I have never traveled with a bettergroup of children in my 20 year career. The studentswere kind, respectful, generous, and friendly toeveryone on the trip. I saw students talking to othersand including everyone in activities. Nobody was left out

Academic HonestyAcademic Honesty - Supporting our Students

This week, high school faculty and students got together to review our Academic Honesty Policy. To assiststudents and support them in their learning, we are implementing Turnitin.com differently this year. Students arenow able to submit their work multiple times to check it before submitting it to their teachers. Students will workin their Homeroom classes to gain a better understanding of how to use the Turnitin.com program to supportthem in their academic journey. We are encouraging students to take responsibility and ownership of their ownwork.

    Our goals are to:

Develop responsible and ethical citizens Reinforce self-respect and respect for peers Protect the integrity of the academic achievement level of all students

These are important terms that frame our understanding of Academic Honesty at BIFS:

Approved Citation and Referencing Formats: styles of formatting pages and acknowledging sources Authentic Work: individual and original ideas expressed in ones own words Collusion: sharing work when the project is not collaborative in nature Duplication of work: submitting the same work for different subjects Plagiarism: copying anothers work and claiming it as ones own Malpractice: collusion, duplication and plagiarism

This week your son/daughter brought home an Academic Honesty Contract. We ask that you review thecontract with your child, and together, sign it with your child to promote a unified understanding. We continueto work to develop a strong connection between students, parents and the school.

Teachers will also be signing an Academic Honesty Contract and displaying it in their classrooms to modelexpectations for students.

If you have any questions regarding the Academic Honesty Policy please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Experiential Learning on MS/HS CampsMS/HS students were off on camps last week from Wednesday to Friday. The camps focused on: encouragingkids to be open minded, how to collaborate and communicate with team members, and gaining an appreciationof the Korean culture. The three days also provided an opportunity for students to create bonds that can be socritical to our daily school routine.

Year levels found themselves in Gyeoungju, Namhae, Gangwon-do, Daegu and Taean. Activities ranged fromzip-lining and caving to rafting and paint-balling. Feedback has been incredibly positive from students andteachers alike. While everyone returned to Busan tired out, the experience was enriching and beneficial to all.Watch for more pictures around campus in the weeks to come.

Counselor's CornerThe new school began in a furious rush, and I am just now slowing down enough to write an article for the BIFSNewsletter. Summer break was uneventful, which was nice, but I did fly to Oregon to attend the annualOverseas Association of College Admission Counselors conference held on the University of Oregon campus. My focus this year was to attend information sessions on university application processes in other countries sinceBIFS students matriculate at universities worldwide. Sessions attended included O Canada! Beaches, Skiing, Golf, and Great Education Options; Independent Scotland? Scotlands Universities Have Always Been Different andProudly Among the Best in the World; Deutschland for Dummies; and Australia 101. In addition, I participated inthe 5K Charity Run which began and ended at the historic Hayward Field, the track and field mecca in theUnited States. I had put in zero preparation for any kind of running event, so it was literally a from couch potatoto 5K event for me. I am proud to say that I finished the 5K and ran the whole way. I did not finish last. As amatter of fact, I finished 15th in my age category. I was too scared to ask if there were only 15 old geezers whohad entered, however. Anyway, the experience motivated me to get back on a regular exercise routine when Ireturned to South Korea which started me thinking. One of the IB Learner Profiles is balance of which we knowregular exercise is a part. Yet many of us in education are not practicing what we preach. Maybe if we adultsmade the commitment to regular exercise, we would be able to manage our stress better as well. Just a thought.
