    ISSUE 51, April 22, 2016

ast week I discussed the concept of global citizenship and what it means to belong to the world. I shared thatlobal citizenship is the vehicle of internationalization and international education, and these are the tools toncourage students to consider their responsibilities to their communities, institutions, and society. This week, Iould like to build on this concept by addressing the question of “Why Global Citizenship Matters”.

believe we can agree that the concept of “Global Citizenship” covers a lot of ground. Thus, it is useful toonsider the term global citizenship as shorthand for the habits of mind and complex learning associated withlobal education. Why does this matter?

irst, a focus on global citizenship puts the spotlight on why internationalization is central to a quality educationnd emphasizes that internationalization is a means, not an end. Serious consideration of the goals of nternationalization makes student learning the key concern rather than counting inputs. Is this not why we wantach of our children to have an international education like what is provided at BIFS?

econd, there are significant benefits in encouraging students to consider their responsibilities to theirommunities and to the world redound to them, institutions, and society. Strengthening our commitment toerving society enriches our school and affirms its relevance and contributions to society, and ultimately benefits

ommunities and the lives of their members around the world.

hird, the concept of global citizenship creates conceptual and practical connections rather than cleavages. Theommonalities between what happens at home and "over there" become visible. What is most important is whate share in common, not our differences. The characteristics that human beings share are balanced against theifferences that are so conspicuous. On a practical level, global citizenship provides a concept that can createridges to inspire cultural empathy and intercultural competence.

am thankful that BIFS is so deeply committed to developing “global citizens” as our students will have theapacity and the competence to change the world! Go BIFS! Go Bears!

NWEA MAP Testing for Grades 2 - 10uring April and May, children in grades 2 - 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress ® (MAP®

We give MAP tests as a measure of individual student instructional levels, to measure individual academicrowth from year-to-year, and as a reflective tool on our programs in the areas of mathematics, reading, andnguage usage.

MAP tests are unique in that they are computerized and adapt to be appropriate for each child’s level of arning. When taking a MAP® test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of

he previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answersncorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the itemsorrectly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level. As a result, each

udent has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

ver the next few days, your child will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests. Following thesting period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth. For more information on resources forarents, we encourage you to download the Parent Toolkit here . The toolkit includes information on how the

MAP is run and scored, as well as tips for parents to support their child at home.
