    ISSUE 40, January 22, 2016

Welcome to the end of the first week of our second semester! As we journey into 2016 and the second half ohe school year together, I would like to encourage us all to harness the power of positivity. The research in threa of behavioral psychology is very persuasive as to the power and influence that a positive outlook has oudent development and learning.

ccording to the Mayo Clinic, positive thinking doesn't mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore's less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness and challenges in

more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to happen, not the worst. Is this not the behaviond attitude that we want to cultivate in our students so they can be resilient learners? Positive thinking oftearts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. Thesutomatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other selfalk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information. If the thoughts that ruhrough your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts ar

mostly positive, you're likely an optimist someone who practices positive thinking.

esearchers exploring the effects of positive thinking and optimism on achievement and health have found thahen people are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, they see more possibilities i

heir life and are more open to new experiences, learning and skill development. Positive emotions broadeour sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options. The range of benefits positive thinking anmotions may provide include: Increased cognitive achievement, greater resiliency, stronger problem solvinbility, increased work ethic, increased life span, lower rates of depression and distress, better well-being, andetter coping skills during hardships and times of stress. What tremendous outcomes!

o, what are some practical steps we all can take to be more positive in 2016? Some suggestions includentifying a small area to focus on where you desire to be more positive, monitor yourself during the day, bepen to humor and give yourself permission to laugh at life, surround yourself with positive people, and mos

mportantly practice positive self-talk. These are some of the approaches to positivity that we seek to cultivate i

    ur students at BIFS.

o, as you embark into 2016 and the second half of the school year, we hope that you will choose to embracositive thinking and the world of possibilities that awaits each of us and our students at BIFS as we continue txplore, discover, belong and thrive! I am positively excited about our future! How about you?

Middle School and High SchoolMHS ManageBac Expectations

    1

roviding clear direction and being transparent is critical to student success. As part of our work in the MHS wave identified ManageBac expectations that will assist students with both time management and organizationakills. We continue to reflect on our practices and aim to establish structures that support student learning.

    Manage ac xpectations

All tasks are labeled as formative (yellow) or summative (red), and whether each task is in-class, at-home

or at-home and in-class.All out-of-school assignments (homework - green) are posted on Managebac before 4:00 pm on the daassigned. All in-class formative assessments are posted at least two days in advance. All summative assessments are posted at least one week in advance.Task-specific rubrics for mid-term and long-term assignments are posted at the same time as the summativassessment.

tudents are expected to check ManageBac on a daily basis to assist with developing self-managementrganizational and study skills. ManageBac is an excellent tool to assist students in both short-term and long

erm planning. Students are encouraged to look at daily, weekly and longer range assignments or tasks.

students have difficulty understanding the posted assignment it is the expectation that they communicate withheir teacher to clarify those misunderstandings.

hank you for your on-going feedback and support as we continue to create structures to assist students andmprove our communication practices.

Visit to KMOU and Their 3D Printing Lab

esign Teachers Kent Saunders and Simon Furmston had the good fortune to visit the 3D printing lab at KMOUKorean Maritime & Oceanographic University).

his place is a bit of a secret and shouldnt be!!! Run by Mark Lee, an economics lecturer at the university, thb operates on minimal funding provided mostly by outside business connections, and the Economicepartment of KMOU.

Mark states that currently they are actively working with 5-7 Korean companies, most of which are startups, anhe few that are expanding their present business model to include 3D printing and are also new to thechnology. They (Mark and his team) provide a global understanding of the technology and the market (such

s it is currently) and making predictions as to where it is going. They also provide insight into the Korean andoreign (mostly the North American) markets and customer profiles of those markets. They also provide specifD printing solutions to clients that are interested in adapting the technological benefits to their operationsom procuring 3rd party services to purchasing the most appropriate hardware or software for their operations

Mark has just completed an extensive report & recommendation on 3D printing for BIFS and supplied the schooith connections to local manufacturers of the machines. These companies are all enthusiasticabout beinvolved in BIFS move towards this developing technology.

Many thanks go out to Mark and for an enjoyable educational visit and all the work he has put into informing

    IFS about this technology.
