What another great week of learning and activities at BIFS! This weekend, BIFS is taking a historic step ixpanding co-curricular activities by hosting a weekend math and student leadership workshop for students iorea and Japan with the Asia International Schools Association (AISA). Additionally, BIFS has two teamompeting in Korea Robot Championship in Seoul and we just enjoyed the elementary schools dramroduction of Flakes! Students at BIFS have a rich array of wonderful activity opportunities as part of theducational experience! Have you ever wondered why does BIFS put so much effort into providing such omprehensive program of activities for our students?

rst and foremost, by examining our guiding statements we can see why activities are valued as an importanart of our mission. Our vision is for our students to develop and pursue their passions, be successful anontribute to a positive global future. Students experiences through our co-curricular programs are a vitarategy for each of them to develop and to pursue their passions.

ur commitment is also supported by research that points to the benefits students derive from participation io-curricular activities at school. For example, students who are involved in co-curricular pursuits tend to havronger levels of achievement and learning due to increased self-esteem, stronger sense of belongingcreased motivation and a better organization and time management. Additionally, students learn new persona

nd social skills such as critical thinking, teamwork and leadership. Co-curricular activities also foster a sense oommitment to a cause or purpose and they help cultivate a focus on service to others. These are all outcomeFS desires for each of our students!

opefully, our community can see the importance of co-curricular activities and assist us by supporting tharious activities and encouraging your students to diversify and deepen their experiences as they successfullursue their passions! Go BIFS! Go Bears!

    SA ACER Testing

ne of the questions parents always ask is, How is my child doing?. A related question is Compared tohat?. This is a particularly critical question for families away from home, where it is hard to know how systemnd standards compare. At BIFS, one way we make such comparisons with other like schools is through theternational Schools Assessment (ISA).

    at is ISA?

ternational Schools Assessment (ISA) is an annual assessment programme that has been developed tomeasure skills in mathematical literacy, reading and writing of students in international schools. ISA is based onhe internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the Programme for Internationatudent Assessment (PISA) developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. A

rowing number of international schools now use ISA, here in the Asia Pacific and around the world.

ater in the year, you will receive ISA reports that provide descriptive information about what students know andan do. The results are equated from year to year so they can be used to track changes over time at individuand school level.

    at is ISA NOT?

A is not a competitive test. It is not a test that students pass. It will not be used for purposes other thanroviding data to us, you, and your child, about his/her learning. While we give opportunities for practiceudents do not prepare for the tests, since they are consistent with what students learn on a regular basis.

    do the assessments work?

tudents complete a reading literacy test, a mathematical literacy test and two writing tests, each of which takeetween 45 minutes and one hour to administer. The tests include both multiple-choice and open-ended tasks.

en is the ISA testing at BIFS?

he tests will be taken by students in Grades 3-10 on February 17th and 18th. They will be taken in normachool conditions e.g. in homeroom groups, in conditions that are familiar to our students.

you have questions, please contact:enny Montague, MYP Coordinator ([email protected])eda Cedo, PYP Coordinator ([email protected])

he first thing that they will look at when we come to the championship will be how well our teams have workend learnt together. They also look at how team members listen to each other and support each other. Mos

mportantly they want to see that our team has fun working together.

terms of the Robot Games we have to design and program our robots to try and complete 12 separatmissions within 2 minutes and 30 seconds. These missions are all based around the environment and details ohe missions are shown on the First Lego League Website:ttp://www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge/2015trashtrek

LC Parent Coffee Reading Aloud to Your Child

ack by popular demand, we will host an ELC parent coffee on reading aloud to your child. Sure, we all read tur kids and understand how important this is to developing pre-literacy skills. However, there are certaiuestioning and reflection techniques you can use when reading with your child that will help to build a deepe

nderstanding of stories and language. You can also practice pre-literacy reading with your child by teachingome critical reading skills, such as book orientation, finger pointing, and initial letter-sound recognition. Theskills and concepts can lead to stronger reading skills in your child as he/she becomes an independent reader.

ease join our ELC Parent Coffee at the ELC Hall on February 17th, Wednesday, from 2:15-3:15.

The purpose of the guidelines and procedures are to ensure transparenommunication and clarity of expectations. Our goal is to develop structures and frameworks to help students toecome successful and independent learners.

    Homework Guidelines and Procedures

usan International Foreign School (BIFS) is committed to providing students with a balanced education. We areoncerned with the academic growth of students as well as their social and physical development.

omework is typically defined as any tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are meant to be carriedut during non-school hours (Cooper, 1989a, p. 7).

    purpose of homework is to:

practice skills and reinforce content, preview material for class discussion (in the flipped classroom), and

study for quizzes and formative and summative assessments.

    fits of homework:

urposeful homework can help students develop the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills essential for a 21sentury learner.

Self Management skills: organization, planning, time management, prioritizing and persistence andperseverance,Thinking: independent problem solving, critical thinking, creative thinking and retrieving, applying antransferring knowledge, skills and understandings.

    ing or Incomplete Work:

Missing or incomplete homework is considered a behavior issue and not an academic issue and will baddressed accordingly.Students may be asked to complete missing work during breaks or after school under teacher supervision. If a pattern of missing or incomplete work exists, teachers will send a Progress Report home and students wiwork with the teacher, principal and/or counselor to resolve the issue.
