ISSUE 30, October 16, 2015

We would like to invite you to a Parent-Student-Teacher (3-Way) Conference on Tuesday, October 20, from 8:30-5:00.

Why will we involve students in these conferences? As an IB school, our charge is to develop students who areintegrally involved in their own learning. Involving students in reflecting on their own strengths and areas forgrowth is one way we support the development of the learner profile in each of our students. As stated by the IBEducation for a Better World brochure:

Because all students and teachers will be involved in conferences, October 20 will be set aside for these meetingsonly -- no regular school sessions will be held on this day. Please adjust your family’s schedule accordingly.

For our Ulsan and Goeje families, we will run buses to and from school at predetermined times. An email hasbeen sent to you which explained the routes, times, and how to reserve space on the bus.

For Middle and High School families, all teachers will be located in the gym from 8:30-4:40 so you can stop byto visit with teachers at any time during the day. Due to the number of students each teacher has, MS and HSwill not be scheduling individual conferences, but rather allowing for families to be flexible with theirconferences.

For Elementary families, including ELC, we ask you to schedule a 20 minute conference slot per teacher visited(Homeroom, EAL, SEN, and Specialists). Click SchoolBookings.net to access the Conference Booking system andenter event Code: BJTSK

Registrations will close at 8:30 on Monday, Oct 19 to allow teachers to prepare for the meetings

If you have several children in the elementary, please note that while there is no childcare on this day, siblingsare welcome to sit just outside the door with a book or game, or inside the sibling’s classroom during theconference, if you prefer.

The Learner Profile is the IB mission statement in action and provides a set oflearning behaviours which aims to inspire, motivate and focus students, teachers and the entire IBSchool community, uniting them in a common purpose.”

We are very sad to hear about the situation with Mr. Baker and extend our love and concernto him and his family. We hope and pray for a complete and speedy recovery.

Every morning and afternoon, he is out welcoming students as they get on and off the bus, rain or shine, he is cheering at sporting events and spends countless hours after school attending meetings withthe Board of Governors and the City of Busan. Elementary SchoolFun, Respectful, Safe? The elementary teaching team spent time talking about continuing to build a proactive and positive elementaryschool culture. A huge component of that is instilling a sense of responsibility between students for one another, and for the school itself. To simplify this concept so it is accessible even to our youngest students in ELC, wedeveloped the key words fun, respectful, and safe. In any given situation, we and our students can ask ourselves:Is it fun for everyone involved? Is it respectful? Is it safe? Classes spent time thinking about what the school lookslike, how it feels, and how it sounds when we are having fun and being respectful and safe. How does it look, sound, and feel to you, our parents? Here are some of the things the kids came up with.

Parents, when your child comes home and shares about the school day, please feel free to use these phrasesand ideas to help them reflect on their day.

Halloween Celebrations in ElementaryGrades KG-5:On October the 30th from lunch time onward, the Student Council will be running a Halloween celebration forKindergarten to Grade 5. Students will have the opportunity to dress up, play games, and participate in aHalloween parade.

In order for the day to be a success, it would be fantastic if all students could find or create a costume to wear. They may choose to wear a Halloween costume, or another costume that isn’t related, for example a Spidermanor Fairy costume. Please do not choose costumes that contain fake weapons, such as guns, swords etc, as theseitems will not be allowed at school.

As part of the festivities, the Student Council would like to hold a Halloween-themed bake sale during lunchtime. All money raised will go towards running the event, and future Student Council events. ISSUE 30, October 16, 2015

Next week, on Tuesday, October 20th we will be having Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences during the schoolday. Students will not attend classes, but are expected to come to school and attend conferences with theirparents. Attending the conferences, with your child gives you the opportunity to meet with each of your child’steachers and discuss “next steps” for their improvement. By involving students we are inviting them to play anactive role in their learning. Students should be actively discussing their progress and developing a plan forimprovement.

To ensure that you get the most out of the experience it is important to speak with your child, review theirreport card comments and identify any areas that you would like to explore in more depth with the teacherduring the conferences. Parents and students can select any time throughout the day to attend.

What will reports look like? For students in MYP, report cards will include comments, but no grades at this time. Middle Years’Programme (MYP) assessment requires each of the four criterion to be assessed for an overall grade tobe assigned. Grade 11 and 12 students will receive both comments and an overall grade on their mid-semester report cards. Comments will focus on strengths, areas for growth/next steps and Approachesto Learning Skills (ATLs).

Focusing on Approaches to LearningOver time, students should develop clear and sophisticated understandings of how they learn best andhow they can evaluate the effectiveness of their learning. This kind of self-regulated (independent andautonomous) learning helps students:

• reflect purposefully on their learning (metacognition)• understand the diversity of human learning needs• evaluate and provide evidence of their learning• share responsibility for creating productive, cooperative and safe learning environments
