This was made possible with the tremendous efforts of past PTA groups who raised funds and helped to improve the academic and after school programs at our school. As most of you already know, this will be my last year at ISK. My family and I will be returning to the United States after having made Kuantan and ISK our home for the past four years. In this time, my wife, children and I have made a great many friends, and we have been able to make a wonderful home here. It is, therefore, a bittersweet occasion to have to say goodbye. This past April on the 22nd to 29th, ISK students in Kindergarten to grade 11 took their second round of MAP assessments in the areas of math, language usage, and reading. It was also the first time that students in grades 3 to 11 took part in science testing. The results of these exams are currently being looked over by our teachers in advance of next year so that we can provide the individualized learning goals needed for each and every student to improve.

The results have also been shared with parents along with some resources that students can use of the summer holiday to stay up-to-date on their studies and continue their learning. As a reminder the MAP in MAP testing stands for The Measure of Academic Progress, and is an assessment that is computer-based and adaptive. ISK has already used the results of our first two rounds of testing to improve the quality of instruction provided to your children, and we look forward to continue using the insight from these exams to help students grow and develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Multicultural Day Friday, the 26th of April, was Multicultural day at ISK. Starting off in the morning, we had middle school and high school dancers perform a beautiful, traditional Malaysian dance called Tarian Inang, which took hours and hours of practice. We followed that by doing last minute preparations for our booth and decorations. After all the groups had set up their own booths and put their sculptures on show, the judges judged each and every one of the booths, taking notes as they went along. The booths involved posters made by middle school and high school students, and also sculptures made by the elementary school students. We then had break, which was followed by a fashion show held on the stage in the hall. Each country participated and contributed two members from their group to participate in the event. It was a great way to show different countries’ national or traditional styles of clothing, and was very interesting to watch.

To conclude the day, all the students met in the hall to hear which booths were announced as winners. Overall, it was a fun experience and we all learnt a lot about different countries and their cultures.

Sports Week During the first week of May, ISK had its Sports days. The first day was devoted primarily to the badminton tournament, a long but exciting affair which lasted for upwards of three hours. It was followed, after a well-deserved lunch, by the tug o’ war preliminaries, and then by team-building games involving flour and water balloons, which were very fun, but neces-sitated a shower afterwards. The second day, which took place after a much-needed day on rest, was the day of the half-court basketball tournament and the tug o’ war finals. The third and final day took place on Friday, with the usual half-day being devoted entirely to track-and-field events.

The badminton tournament benefitted from its length, since it allowed for longer matches which best showcased each play-ers’ ability. The tournament included not just singles, but doubles and mixed doubles. While there were a number of excit-ing matches, my personal favourite was the singles match between Nicholas Loo (Explorers) and Teo He Yang (Voyagers). It was an intense match, with each side valiantly defending themselves from an onslaught of attacks.

Each tug o’ war match was hard-fought, with each team giving it their all. Regrettably, there was egregious cheating during one of the preliminary matches. However, it ended with a rematch in which the team which did not deserve to win lost. The winner of that match went on to defeat their opponents in the finals, which was an admirable struggle on the part of the Navigators, who won second place.

The Elementary school students took part in their very own Swimming Gala, which was a welcome respite from the rather harsh weather.

The half-court basketball tournament was composed of short but intense three-on-three games. Spectators witnessed the Trekkers, the underdog of the tournament, claim victory, battling larger opponents. Also present in the tournament was the teacher-student basketball game, which proved to be interesting.

In my opinion, the track-and-field event was the highlight of the week. Students travelled (not very far) to IIUM Stadium, where they did long-jump, shotput, and the 100m dash. Some students even took part in a 4 x 100m relay, competing against parents and teachers. To my chagrin, there were no middle-distance races.

Taking part in the Sports Days was incredibly fun for me, and provided a much-needed adrenaline rush before Ramadan began. Although I didn’t win much, I still enjoyed participating, and I look forward to next year’s Sports Days.

Students in Grade 8 conducted a mini ecoscience fair as part of a project for their science class. The objective of the ecoscience fair is to provide an understanding of the importance of ecoscience and to develop engineering skills to improve the environment. Student projects were judged by other science teach-ers based on rubrics provided by the grade 8 science teacher Ms. Rachel David.

Elementary, Middle and High School students had fun participating in Bowling Day and at the same time developed their hand-eye coordination and balancing skills.

ISK Elementary students presented their castle sculpture projects.

On May 31st ISK celebrated its 21st annual Graduation and Awards ceremony. In addition to honoring the accomplishments of six graduating seniors, students from kindergarten to grade 12 also received awards for their various achievements throughout the academic year. These awards included honors for Most Outstanding, Most Improved, and Outstanding Effort in individual classes, as well as awards for athletic achievement, leadership within Student council, sports teams, and various clubs. Finally, a few special honors were given to five outstanding students for exemplifying the characteristics espoused in ISK’s Anchor Values. One student each was honored for the traits of Communication, Lifelong Learning, Problem Solving, People Skills, and Responsibility.

In addition to the honoring of all students for their achievements this year, we also held the graduation cer-emony for our seniors and their culmination of studies at ISK. A special acknowledgement was given to two seniors; Arkajit Pal and Nurliya Batrisyia Shamsudin, as they were named the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of their classes. We wish our seniors good fortune and all the best in their future endeavors. Way to go!

Best of luck to the Graduating Class of 2018-2019 for The International School of Kuantan.
