Overview
Today’s studio has to maintain compatibilitywith a multiplicity of standards, ready for quicktransfers between the analogue and digitaldomains and easy interfacing betweennumerous digital audio formats.
The I/O 896 provides a neat, simple answer tomany of these interconnection dilemmas, andguarantees top-class AD and DA conversion.
Designed for Soundscape by Apogee, one ofthe world’s most prestigious AD/DA conversionspecialists, the I/O 896 packs a wealth ofuseful options in a stylish, 2-U high
rackmountable unit that perfectly integrateswith the design of the latest generationSoundcape products: Soundscape 32,Soundscape 16, iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox64MADI and iBox 48-TA.
It connects to a Soundscape Digital AudioWorkstation (Soundscape 32, Soundscape 16)or PCI card (Mixtreme 192, Mixpander PowerPak) via TDIF, providing eight analogue inputsand outputs via Apogee converters, eightADAT inputs and outputs and eight AES/EBUinputs and outputs. 24bit audio is handled atup to 96kHz and front panel metering isprovided for the analogue inputs, along withsignal indicators for the analogue outputs. Thesignal routing between the inputs and outputscan be configured easily from the front panel.
An exclusive Apogee Soft Limit analoguecircuit allows you to maximize the analogueinput levels without overloading.
The I/O 896 can generate WordClock at up to96kHz or operate as WordClock slave.
Product details
The back panel of the I/O 896 features:
The front panel features:The power switch.A TDIF Thru mode button with LEDindicator:- If TDIF Thru mode is off, signalsreceived via the analogue, AES/EBU orADAT inputs (according to the “InputSelect” setting) reach only thecorresponding TDIF outputs. Signalsreceived via the TDIF inputs reach allthe outputs except TDIF. This is thenormal setting for recording andmonitoring.- If TDIF Thru mode is on, signalsreceived via the analogue, AES/EBU orADAT inputs (according to the “InputSelect” setting) reach all the outputs(including TDIF). This setting can beused for format conversion. The Soft Limit button and indicator LED.The Apogee Soft Limit function controlsthe transient peaks at the analogueinputs so that a higher signal level canbe recorded without overloading.Wide/Narrow Lock mode indicator LEDs(active when the I/O 896 operates asMaster Clock slave).A Master Clock source selection buttonwith four indicator LEDs. The clocksource can be set to:- Internal: The I/O 896 operates asWordClock master.- External: The I/O 896 locks to aWordClock/SuperClock signal receivedvia its WordClock/Superclock connector.- Input: The Master Clock source is thecurrently selected digital input. Thisoption is not available when using theanalogue input.- TDIF: The I/O 896 locks to the MasterClock signal provided by theSoundscape Digital Audio Workstation
or PCI card.An Input Select button with four indicatorLEDs. The input selection determineswhich eight input signals are receivedand transmitted to the outputs. Theavailable settings are AES/EBU, Optical(ADAT), and Analog. The chosen inputsignals are transmitted to the TDIFoutputs only (typically for recording), orto all the outputs, depending on the“TDIF Thru” setting.A Sample Rate selection button with fourindicator LEDs. Four internal samplerates are available: 44.1kHz, 48kHz,88.2kHz and 96kHz. If the I/O 896operates as Master Clock slave, thebutton is inactive and the LEDs reflectthe Sample Rate provided by the masterdevice. The metering section: eight “Signal”LEDs for the analogue outputs, eight“Signal” LEDs and eight “Overload”LEDs for the analogue inputs. Thebrightness of the “Signal” LEDs variesaccording to the level of the audio signal. The “Overload” LEDs have infinite peakhold with a “Clear Overs” button to theleft of the metering LEDs.
