Ed Sheeran – A Team

In the music video for “A Team” by Ed Sheeran, it is an unusual video because it is a narrativeand tells a story about a homeless girl who is in prostitution who is selling to get her fix .

At the beginning of the video there is a close up of a woman standing over a girls body and crying. As a audience we immediately think the girl laying on the ground is dead. We are then shown a close up of the body then the close up then turns into a medium shot. The girl is staring blankly into the camera and in the background the sound of a bird chirping can be heard. This effective is used because it gives the audience a cold feeling towards the video, and they are drawn in to find out who she is and what happened.

The video is in black and white, which shows howbasic it is. Also the fact it is in black and whiteshows that there are no distractions away from the meaning to the lyrics and the video. The blackand white could also be a reflection of the main Characters life, hard and colourless.

We are then shown a medium close up, from thisscene the audience learn more about the character andRealise she is homeless as we are shown in this shot hersleeping on a bench with a blanket wrapped around her,not fully dressed suggesting she cant afford clothes. In the background of this scene we can see a large amountof dead trees, the meaning behind this may be to show that trees are dying and it shows her dead at the beginning.

During the whole of the video low key lightingis used maybe again to convey her hard and colourless life.

In the video we see the effect “stop motion” used several times. Here it is used to show how she is standing still and all the cars are moving fast, like life is passing her by and noone cares about her.

This clip has been fast forward to show all thepeople walking past her without even looking at herwhile she sits still. This effect is used to show a lot oftime has passed.

In this scene a “two shot” is used, to show theMain character, and this is the first time we see theartist of the song in the video, Ed Sheeran. This effectis simply used to show a shot of two people.

Here a extreme close up is used to show the charactergetting ready, as we are now aware for a night of prostitution.This effect is used to show facial expression.

There is a close up of her taking money from a mans pocket, which then becomes clear to the audience for definite it is prostitution she is involved in.

A mid shot of her and the man is then used, which turns into a focused close up of her to show her facial expressions of horror, disgust, and guilt. This is used to make the viewers feel sympathy for the character, and what conditions this young girl has been led to live.

In these two shots, extreme close up of hands are used, this is used because it shows the money being exchanged for drugs and it again highlights the storyline to the viewers and that the character takes drugs.

Three close up, quick shots are used when the drugs are being taken by the character. This is to give tension and suspense to the viewers and makes them feel sympathy.

Here a low angle shot is used to convey an impressionthat the character is in heaven, and has died due totaking the drugs. Also showing that it is the end of a narrativevideo and this is the end.
