2018-19 MICHIGAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL JANUARY 27 -- #23 MICHIGAN STATE 2018-19 MICHIGAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL JANUARY 27 -- #23 MICHIGAN STATE
Last Time OutAfter trailing by as many as nine in the contest, the Uni-versity of Michigan women’s basketball team closed within two points with 3:16 remaining, but could get no closer in a 70-60 loss to Indiana on Thursday eve-ning (Jan. 24) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
After a pair of free throws from senior Nicole Mung-er, freshman Naz Hillmon pulled the Maize and Blue within two, 60-58, with 3:16 left on a putback. Indiana countered with five straight points, including a corner triple to beat the shot clock after a loose-ball scramble, to take control of the game down the stretch.
Munger went for 16 points, including an 8-for-8 show-ing from the free throw line. Hillmon joined her in dou-ble figures with 16 points, with senior Hallie Thome and freshman Amy Dilk each chipping in eight points. Michigan was outrebounded for just the second time this season as IU held a 44-34 advantage on the glass. The Hoosiers also shot 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from three-point range.
Indiana opened a 47-38 lead with seven minutes left in the third, but Michigan slowly chipped away, eventual-ly getting back within three points on a Hillmon layup. After an Indiana timeout to save possession at 3:46, Michigan got a stop and putback from Hillmon to get within one, 49-48.
Indiana closed the quarter on an 8-2 run for a 57-50 lead after 30 minutes.
Munger scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws with 7:58 left, trimming Indiana’s lead to five, 57-52. Thome followed with a turnaround hook in the lane at the 6:53 mark, but the Hoosiers hit a corner triple on their next trip to regain a 60-54 lead.
Home Sweet HomeMichigan is back at home for its fourth third conference game of the season, hosting Michigan State in the first of two games between the rivals. U-M is 8-0 at Crisler Center this season, most recently rallying for a 62-58 win over Ohio State last Sunday (Jan. 20). U-M is aver-aging 78.6 points per game at Crisler, while allowing 52.2 points per contest. Michigan’s eight home games is the lowest mark in the Big Ten.
Rival TimeMichigan and Michigan State are playing a home-and-home series for the second straight season. Last year, the teams split the season series as both teams won at home. The Wolverines came away with a 74-48 win over the Spartans at Crisler Center before MSU countered with a 66-61 victory at the Breslin Center. Michigan’s 26-point victory in Ann Arbor was the larg-est margin of victory for the Wolverines in the series. Michigan and Michigan State have faced off against each other 13 times since 2012-13, the most frequent opponent for U-M during that stretch. The teams have met at least twice in all but one of the last six seasons, including two seasons (2012-13, 2014-15) with three games between the rivals.
Schedule GauntletMichigan has had quite the schedule to open Big Ten play, with five of U-M’s first eight games away from Cris-ler. The Wolverines are also in a tough stretch to end January, as U-M is in the midst of playing No. 11 Mary-land (A), No. 17 Iowa (A), Ohio State (H), RV Indiana (A), No. 23 Michigan State (H) and No. 17 Iowa (H) again. The Big Ten features four teams ranked in the top 25 this week.
Facing Another Ranked TeamMichigan is squaring off against its eighth top-25 op-ponent of the season when it takes on No. 23 Michi-gan State. Michigan is 2-5 against ranked teams this season, picking up wins over No. 12 Minnesota and No. 21 Missouri. This marks just the second game against a ranked opponent to be held at Crisler Center.
Thome Says No!Senior Hallie Thome tied a career high with five blocks at Indiana on Thursday (Jan. 24), pushing her career to-tal to 187. She is second all-time at Michigan and with 13 more rejections, will become just the second player in school history to total 200 career blocks. She previ-ously rejected five shots against Maryland during her freshman year (Jan. 14, 2016).
MSU ConnectionJunior Kayla Robbins has a connection to Michigan State as her dad, Kevin, played football at MSU from 1987-88. He was a third round pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, going No. 75 to the Los Angeles Rams.
Expecting a Big CrowdA large crowd is expected for the game against Mich-igan State in the annual “Crash Crisler” contest. It is U-M’s third “Crash Crisler” game, with the first in 2017 against MSU resulting in the first sellout in program history (12,707). Last season against Ohio State in the “Crash Crisler” game, U-M welcomed 8,313 fans for the second-largest crowd in program history.
Hillmon Named B1G Freshman of the WeekFreshman Naz Hillmon was named the Big Ten Fresh-man of the Week and to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll after a pair of double-figure scoring games. In Michigan’s come-from-behind win against Ohio State (Jan. 20), Hillmon scored a game-high 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting with eight rebounds. Hillmon scored the game-winning bucket, corralling an of-fensive rebound and scoring with seven seconds on the clock. At No. 22 Iowa (Jan. 17), Hillmon scored 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting and grabbed six boards. It is Hillmon’s third Freshman of the Week honor this season and the first time she has made the Honor Roll.
Helping HandFreshman Amy Dilk handed out 10 assists against Ohio State (Jan. 17), marking the first time in her career to reach double figures. She is the first Wolverine to tal-ly at least 10 assists in a game since Siera Thompson dished out 10 on Jan. 7, 2017, against Ohio State. Dilk is currently 10th in the conference and second among freshmen with 4.4 assists per game.
Hillmon Heating UpFreshman Naz Hillmon has found consistency over the last three games, reaching double figures in each game en route to averaging 17.3 points per game on 71.4 per-cent shooting. Hillmon scored 16 points at Iowa (Jan. 17) before putting up 20 points and nine rebounds in U-M’s come-from-behind win against Ohio State (Jan. 20). Hillmon followed that up with 20 points with nine rebounds at Indiana (Jan. 24). On the season, Hillmon is second both nationally and in the Big Ten to Megan Gustafson in field goal percentage at .704. Hillmon and Gustafson are the only two players in the country to be shooting at least 70 percent from the floor.
Munger ManiaSenior Nicole Munger is making the most of her final season in the Maize and Blue, averaging a ca-reer-best 11.0 points per contest. Munger leads U-M in three-pointers with 41 on the season, pushing her

career total to 158 (7th all-time at Michigan). Mung-er is up to 882 career points after recording two straight double-digit scoring games. With 11 reg-ular season games remaining and postseason ac-tion, Munger can become the 28th member of the 1,000-point club with 118 more points.
Coming Back to WinMichigan was down by 12 points with eight min-utes to go against Ohio State before closing on a 21-5 run to take the win on Sunday (Jan. 17). It was the first time U-M came back from a double-digit deficit since the last time the Wolverines and Buck-eyes met (Jan. 17, 2018). U-M faced a 10-point defi-cit late in the second quarter before rallying for the win. It was the first time since rallying for a 72-70 win over Iowa on Feb. 5, 2017, that Michigan came back from a double-digit deficit in the second half. U-M was down by 12 points with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter of that game before rallying for the win.
Winning a Low-Scoring AffairMichigan found a new way to win when it came away with a 62-58 win over Ohio State. It was Mich-igan’s lowest point total in a win since knocking off Nebraska, 69-64, in overtime last season (Jan. 13, 2018). It was only the third win over the last two seasons that Michigan scored fewer than 70 points.
Cutting Down on the TurnoversMichigan has cut down on its turnovers recently, committing just 17 total against No. 9 Maryland (Jan. 12) and No. 22 Iowa (Jan. 17). U-M had just sev-en against the Hawkeyes, the first time with fewer than 10 miscues in a game since totaling just nine against Fort Wayne (now Purdue-Fort Wayne) on Dec. 16, 2017. The last time Michigan tallied single digits in turnovers during a Big Ten game was at Illi-nois on Feb. 1, 2017.
Brown Hits Her StrideSophomore Hailey Brown has upped her game since Big Ten play began, averaging 9.1 points per game on 48.2 percent shooting in Michigan’s eight Big Ten games. Brown has scored in double figures three times and is grabbing 4.6 boards in 27.3 min-utes per game.
Freshmen Making an ImpactMichigan has gotten some major contributions from the freshman duo of Amy Dilk and Naz Hillm-on. Dilk has started all 20 games for the Maize and Blue, ranking 11th in the Big Ten among freshmen in scoring (7.5 ppg) and second in assists (4.4 apg). Dilk has scored in double figures six times this sea-son after turning in 12 points at Maryland (Jan. 12). Hillmon is second among B1G freshmen in scoring (12.4 ppg), fourth in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and first in field goal percentage (.704). Hillmon has three double-doubles and has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this season.
Balanced OffenseMichigan has been balanced offensively this sea-son, with six different players leading Michigan in scoring through 20 games. Scouting Michigan StateMichigan State (14-5, 4-4 B1G) is coming off a 77-60 win over Illinois on Thursday (Jan. 24) at home. Thome Named B1G Player of the WeekSenior Hallie Thome was named the Big Ten Play-er of the Week on Jan. 14 after recording a pair of double-doubles. In Michigan’s 79-78 overtime win against Northwestern (Jan. 8), Thome scored 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor and a 3-for-4 performance at the free throw line. She also grabbed 11 boards with two assists and three blocks in the contest. At No. 9 Maryland (Jan. 12), the lefty scored a game-high 25 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the floor to go with 10 boards. It was the second weekly honor of Thome’s career.
Nailbiters!Michigan has been involved in some late game dra-ma recently, with back-to-back contests decided by just one point. Michigan fell by one point, 71-70, at Purdue (Jan. 5), before bouncing back for a 79-78 overtime win against Northwestern (Jan. 8). It was Michigan’s first one-point win since a 77-76 win over Temple on March 28, 2016. The last time U-M won a one-point contest in Big Ten action was a 70-69 win over Michigan State on Feb. 16, 2013. It was also the first time in school history that the Maize and Blue has played in back-to-back one-point games.
Church Does It AllSophomore Deja Church continues to make strides during her sophomore season, tallying the first double-double of her career in Michigan’s win over Southern (Dec. 21). Church set new career marks in points (19), rebounds (10) and steals (4) in the contest, making her the third Wolverine to record a double-double. That came on the heels of an all-around performance at Oakland (Dec. 9), as she went for nine points, a career-high nine assists and five rebounds in 26 minutes. Through 19 games this season, Church has already set new career highs in points (19), assists (9), rebounds (10), steals (4), blocks (2), field goals made (6), three-pointers made (3) and free throws made (7).
Thome Moves Into Third All-Time in ScoringSenior Hallie Thome has moved into third place on Michigan’s all-time scoring list, pushing her total to 1,940 points. Thome is behind all-time leader Kate-lynn Flaherty (2,776) and Diane Dietz (2,076) on Michigan’s all-time scoring list. In addition, Thome

is up to 809 career boards (7th). Thome is the only Wolverine in school history to have at least 1,900 points and 800 rebounds in a career. She was also named a Senior CLASS nominee earlier this season, one of 30 women’s basketball players recognized.
On the GlassMichigan has hit the glass hard this season, averaging 41.2 rebounds per game and a +8.8 rebounding margin. U-M has grabbed at least 40 boards in 11 games this season, highlighted by accumulating 60 rebounds twice this season, coming at Western Michigan (Nov. 15) and against LIU Brooklyn (Dec. 6). U-M has out-rebounded its opponent 15 times this season, going 12-3 in those games. U-M has only been outrebounded three times, while tying with its opponent twice.
Back to 18 GamesAfter playing a 16-game Big Ten schedule the last two seasons, the Big Ten season is back to an 18-game schedule for the first time since the 2015-16 sea-son. Michigan will face Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin in home-and-home series this season. U-M will host Rutgers, Northwestern, Minnesota and Ohio State, while playing at Maryland, Illinois, Penn State and Purdue during the conference season.
Smooth as DilkFreshman Amy Dilk had quite the performance against Washington (Nov. 25), setting new career highs in points (19) and rebounds (9). She also handed out seven assists, flirting with a triple-double in the U-M win. Dilk was 7-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line en route to her 19 points. Michigan has never had a player record a triple-double in program history.
Ranked Non-Conference OpponentsMichigan faced its fourth ranked opponent of the season in No. 22 Marquette on Dec. 2. U-M has a win over then-No. 21 Missouri before falling to No. 10 Texas, No. 13 NC State and No. 22 Marquette, with all four games away from Crisler Center. It was the first time since the 2010-11 season that Michigan has faced four ranked opponents during the non-conference portion of its season. U-M squared off against No. 5 Xavier, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 19 Iowa State and No. 24 Boston College during that campaign.
Smeenge Turns in Career BestSophomore Priscilla Smeenge turned in the best game of her career in Mich-igan’s contest at Marquette (Dec. 2), scoring in double figures for the first time. Smeenge scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while also recording two assists and a rebound. She led Michigan’s effort in the fourth quarter, helping U-M out-score the Golden Eagles, 26-11. Smeenge turned in 10 straight points, hitting a pair of layups followed by a pair of triples. She tied for the team lead in scoring, marking the first time in her career she has led the team in that category.
Munger Hits Seven TreysSenior Nicole Munger put her name in the record book with seven triples in Michigan’s win over Washington (Nov. 25). Munger poured in a career-best 27 points on the strength of seven triples, also a career high. It was the sixth time a Wolverine has made at least seven three-pointers in a game as she joins Kate-lynn Flaherty and Kate Thompson in that club. Munger was the only player in the Big Ten to hit seven triples in a game during the non-conference season.
New FacesMichigan added several new faces to its bench during the offseason. Yvonne Sanchez joined the program as an assistant coach, giving Michigan a former head coach (New Mexico) on the sidelines. In addition, former Wolverine great Jenny Ryan (2010-13) was added as a graduate manager. Alice De Fazio (Direc-tor of Player Personnel) and Dan Dardarian (Video Coordinator) also joined the staff. De Fazio was KBA’s head coach at Montclair State.
Hillmon Wins Gold with USA BasketballFreshman forward Naz Hillmon helped the USA Basketball U18 team to its ninth straight gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Americas Championship. For the tourna-ment, Hillmon was third on the team in scoring after going for 10.3 points per game on 67 percent shooting from the floor. She also averaged 5.7 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game. Her scoring average put her 15th in the tournament and her rebounding average was good for 13th.
Hillmon joins current head coach Kim Barnes Arico as members of the team to possess a gold medal from the FIBA Americas Championship. Barnes Arico was
an assistant coach for the team that won in 2014.
Simple Enough...Just ScoreU-M is 57-6 under head coach Kim Barnes Arico when scoring at least 80 points. Michigan has reached that mark five times this season.
KBA Keeps WinningHead coach Kim Barnes Arico picked her up 400th career win last season, becoming the seventh active Big Ten head coach to reach 400. KBA is Michigan’s all-time wins leader with 146 and is still the winningest coach at St. John’s with 176 victories. Her .651 winning percentage is tops in program history.

Head Coach Kim Barnes AricoSeventh YearMontclair State, ‘93Career W-L: 416-287Michigan W-L: 146-81
Kim Barnes Arico enters her seventh season as the head coach in 2018-19, guiding the Wolverines
to at least 20 wins in each of her six seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2017 WNIT Championship. She was announced as the ninth head coach in the history of the program on April 20, 2012. Barnes Arico is already the winningest coach in program history, amassing 134 wins in just six seasons. The only coach in program history to have six 20-win seasons, KBA is first all-time in winning percentage (.647) with a 134-73 record in Ann Arbor. Barnes Arico holds an 84-26 (.763) record at Crisler Center during her tenure after a 14-3 mark during the 2017-18 season. U-M has won at least 13 games at Crisler in six of her seven seasons, including a record-setting 19 wins in 2016-17. Barnes Arico also eclipsed 400 wins for her career during the 2017-18 season, making her the seventh active Big Ten coach to reach the mark. KBA has coached 10 players to 16 All-Big Ten citations, highlighted by U-M’s all-time leading scorer and three-time All-Big Ten first teamer Katelynn Fla-herty. Flaherty, the 2017-18 Michigan Female Athlete of the Year, also earned three consecutive WBCA All-America honorable mentions (2016, 2017, 2018) as the only player in school history with multiple honors. Barnes Arico was named the 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches and media, becom-ing the first consensus winner in school history. Nicole Elmblad also earned back-to-back Academic All-America honors (2014, 2015) and was the recipi-ent of the Medal of Honor in 2015. Barnes Arico also completed a two-year stint with USA Basketball (2014-15), serving as an assistant coach alongside Dawn Staley (South Carolina) and Jeff Walz (Louisville) for the U18 (2014) and U19 (2015) teams. She won a pair of gold medals at the FIBA U19 World Championships in 2015 and at the FIBA U18 America’s Championship in 2014.
Michigan has made the postseason in each of Barnes Arico’s six seasons, ad-vancing to the NCAA Tournament second round twice (2013, 2018). U-M has found itself back in the national spotlight as well during KBA’s tenure, return-ing to the Associated Press poll in January 2013 for the first time in 10 years. Michigan has been ranked 21 times in the AP poll and 19 times in the coaches’ poll over the last six years. The 2017-18 season saw U-M return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season, where the Wolverines picked up a win in the first round. Michigan compiled a 23-10 record during the season, the sec-ond-most wins in a season in school history. Flaherty set a new Michigan re-cord by hitting 118 three-pointers on the season en route to earning her third straight consensus Big Ten honor. Hallie Thome was a first-teamer for the sec-ond straight season and Jillian Dunston was named to the Big Ten All-Defen-sive Team. U-M spent the majority of the season ranked in both polls, peaking at No. 13 in the Associated Press poll at the beginning of February. Michigan’s 15-week run in the AP poll was the longest in program history. Barnes Arico led Michigan to its first postseason championship in 2016-2017, as the Wolverines captured the WNIT Championship after being left out of the NCAA Tournament despite a third place finish in the Big Ten. Michigan went 11-5 in conference play to finish alone in third place, its highest finish since 2011 and the second-most Big Ten wins in program history. Flaherty and Thome each earned All-Big Ten first-team honors to mark the first time U-M had multiple first teamers. The Wolverines regrouped during the WNIT, reeling off six straight wins for the title. U-M held off Georgia Tech in three overtimes in the championship game to hang its first banner in Crisler.
During KBA’s first five seasons in the Maize and Blue, the Wolverines racked up at least 20 wins in each year and advanced to the postseason each time.
In 2013-14, U-M weathered losing 88 percent of its scoring from the season before to still reach 20 wins and the third round of the WNIT with four new starters. Prior to joining the Maize and Blue, she spent 10 seasons at the helm of the St. John’s women’s hoops program, building the Red Storm into a national power. She guided St. John’s to four NCAA Tournament appearances, with the Red Storm advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2012. Barnes Arico compiled a 176-133 overall record and five 20-win campaigns at St. John’s. She was twice named Big East Coach of the Year (2006, 2012) and had 11 of her players earn All-Big East honors and six receive all-rookie team selection. In 2011-12, St. John’s posted a 24-10 overall record and finished second (13-3) in the Big East standings. Barnes Arico was named the 2012 Big East Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the USBWA National Coach of the Year award. St. John’s finished No. 15 in the final USA Today Coaches poll and reached its highest-ever ranking of No. 13 by the Associated Press. The highlight of the 2011-12 season was when Barnes Arico and her Red Storm ended Connecticut’s 99-game home winning streak with a 57-56 win on Feb. 19, 2012, at Gampel Pavilion. It was also the UConn’s first home loss to an unranked opponent in nearly 19 years. Prior to accepting her position at St. John’s, Barnes Arico was extremely suc-cessful at NCAA Division II Adelphi (1999-2002). She led the Panthers to three consecutive postseason appearances, posting a 65-24 overall record and a 51-13 league mark. In 2001-02, Adelphi won its first New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tourna-ment. The Panthers finished with a 28-3 record and earned the school’s first national ranking in school history, finishing No. 12. Barnes Arico was named the NYCAC, NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Division II and Nassau Coun-ty Sports Commission Outstanding Female Coach of the Year. Barnes Arico started her head coaching career at Fairleigh Dickinson-Madi-son, a Division III university in New Jersey. She led the Devils to a 13-11 re-cord during the 1996-97 season before accepting the head coaching post at New Jersey Institute of Technology for two seasons (1997-99). Helping the program transition from Division III to Division II, Barnes Arico was named the New Jersey Coach of the Year after taking the program from the five-win total in her first season to 11 victories in year two. A native of Mastic Beach, N.Y., Barnes Arico helped lead Stony Brook Univer-sity to the 1989 NCAA Division III Tournament as a freshman. She spent her final three seasons at Montclair State University, serving as captain during her junior and senior seasons. Barnes Arico led the team to back-to-back ECAC Tournament appearances in 1991 and 1992 and was the team’s leading scorer both seasons. A scholar-athlete award recipient, Barnes Arico graduated from Montclair State in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health. Barnes Arico went into teaching after graduation, accepting a position as a physical education and health teacher at the Academy of Saint Aloysius in Jersey City, N.J., during the 1993-94 academic year. She left Saint Aloysius and moved into an identical position at Chatham High School from 1994-96 in Chatham, N.J. Barnes Arico and her husband, Larry Arico, are the parents of a son, Trevor, and daughters Emma and Cecelia.
