LONG DISTANCE NEWSAshton Duncan leads LCU with 66 three-pointers this season (third in the LSC). Duncan leads the LSC shooting 43.1% from long range (ranks 22nd nationally) and ranks third in the LSC with 2.6 three-pointers per game. She has made at least three three-pointers in 14 games this season and made at least one three-pointer in her last 27 games played.
TOO MUCH MATH INVOLVEDLCU has one individual player in the top-five in the LSC in assist/turn-over ratio and leads the LSC with a team assist/turnover ratio of 1.16, which ranks 21st nationally. LCU’s individual leader is Caitlyn Cunyus, who ranks fourth in the LSC with a 1.67 ratio (ranks 71st nationally).
COURAGEOUS HONORLubbock Christian University women’s basketball forward Whitney Cox had a special moment in the preseason, as she was able to com-pete against her older sister, Lauren, as LCU faced Baylor in Waco on October 30, 2019. Tuesday, the two were individually notified and informed they will see each other at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in New Orleans, as co-recipients of the Pat Summitt Award for Courage by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
Lauren was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of seven and has been a model and an unofficial spokesman towards the aware-ness of T1D. Her younger sister, Whitney, was diagnosed at the age of 17, and now both players have aimed to inspire others with T1D.
Whitney is in her first season with the Lady Chaps and has appeared in 12 games this season. She is coming off a career-high four-re-bound performance against Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday. Whitney is a Humanities major and a member of LCU’s Honor College. WHEN AT HOMELCU went 15-0 last season inside Rip Griffin Center. With LCU’s 71-29 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday (closed out a 13-0 home record this season), LCU extended their active home win streak to 78 games, which ranks third all-time in NCAA Division II women’s basketball (it actively leads all of NCAA). The record is 87 consecutive home victories by Nebraska-Kearney, who completed the task from Jan. 31, 1995 - Nov. 24, 2001. LCU’s last home loss came on Jan. 1, 2015 against Oklahoma City University. LCU, who also has a 7-0 mark in NCAA postseason play in Lubbock in the mix, has also won 66 con-secutive home conference games, with their last conference home loss occurring Jan. 10, 2013 (against Oklahoma City). They com-pleted a 49-0 all-time mark in Heartland Conference home games.
BUT ON THE ROAD…LCU is 7-3 in road play this season. Maddi Chitsey leads LCU averag-ing 15.6 points on the road and joins Allie Schulte (11.4), Ashton Duncan (11.1) and Emma Middleton (10.3) as players averaging double figures in points on the road. LCU is shooting 45.5% on the road this season and they are holding opponents to a 35.3% shoot-ing mark.
NATIONALLY KNOWNBased on the preseason rankings for the 2019-20 season (D2SIDA,
WBCA along with Lone Star Conference), the Lady Chaparrals carry the highest expectations in program history to start a season. D2SI-DA placed the defending national champions No.1 and the WBCA ranked LCU No.2 despite the Lady Chaps receiving 14 of the 23 first place votes. Each ranking marked their highest preseason ranking in program history. The LSC preseason ranked LCU No.1 in their pre-season rankings. LCU held their debut rankings for seven-in-season rankings, until dropping to No.9 (WBCA) and No.21 (D2SIDA) on Jan. 21. They worked their way to No.8 in the WBCA poll until falling at A&M-Commerce, but have bounced back to move to No.6 in this week’s polls. The D2SIDA poll currently has them at No.13.
HOW TOUGH IS IT?LCU’s strength of schedule, of games played, ranks as the 10th toughest schedule of games played in NCAA Division II play. LCU’s opponents have combined for a .571 win percentage. They have the toughest strength of schedule of South Central Region teams. The Lady Chaps have faced four nationally ranked programs and LCU is 2-2 against those foes this season (LCU went 6-1 last season against nationally ranked foes). To put it into comparison with the top team in the conference, Texas A&M – Commerce’s strength of schedule ranks 255th nationally.
BLOCK PARTIES ARE BACKLCU ranks 12th nationally in blocks (134) and 11th in blocks per game (5.2). Maddi Chitsey leads the team with 50 blocks (fifth in the conference and 32nd nationally), at a pace of 1.9 per game (fifth in the conference and 34th nationally). LCU has ranked in the top-10 nationally in blocks each season since the 2015-16 sea-son, which was their first season eligible to have statistics included among NCAA leaders. They ranked 10th in total blocks last season (155), second in 2017-18 (202, ranking fourth with a pace of 6.1 per game), fourth in 2016-17 (170, leading the nation with 5.7 per game) and led NCAA Division II in 2015-16 with 235 blocks (6.7 per game).
CHARITY WORKThe Lady Chaps lead the LSC in free-throw percentage (ranking 18th nationally) at 78.1%. In each season LCU has been eligible to have team statistics included among NCAA Division II leaders (2015-15), the Lady Chaps have finished in the top-three in their conference in free-throw shooting. They led the Heartland Confer-ence in 2017-18 with a 76.2% mark from the line, ranking 33rd nationally. Their highest national ranking is 32nd (75.0%) from the 2015-16 season. Maddi Chitsey leads LCU and is fourth in the LSC with a 76.9% shooting mark from the line (Caitlyn Cunyus, 45/51 - 88.2% and Madelyn Turner, 31/35 - 88.6% do not qualify with enough attempts).
BE DEFENSIVEThe Lady Chaps ranks second in the LSC and rank third nationally, holding opponents to a 32.4% shooting mark on the season. Of their 31 contests, LCU has held the opponent to under a 30% shoot-ing mark 10 times and the highest shooting percentage they have allowed in a game was 43.1% by UAFS, which was one of only two times an LCU opponent has shot over 40.0% this season. Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, LCU held the Javelinas scoreless in the third quarter, which marked the second time in program history they have held a team scoreless in a quarter. LCU also ranks 10th nationally in defensive scoring, holding the opposition to an average of 54.0 points a game.
REGIONAL REVIEWThe NCAA released their second South Central Regional Rankings of the season Wednesday and the Lady Chaps are ranked second in the regional standings. The No.1 seed in the final rankings released after the conference tournaments will serve as host (unless refused) of the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament, and only the top eight teams qualify for the tournament.

ACTIVE LEADERS VS. WNMUHere is a look at the top-three active Lady Chaps career leaders against WNMU:Maddi Chitsey / 2 games (16.5 points, 13/20 FG)Caitlyn Cunyus / 2 games (11.0 points, 6/12 3pt-FG)Laynee Burr / 1 game (10 points, 4/6 FG)
PREVIOUS RECAP VS. WNMUJan. 2, 2017 (Lubbock, Texas) - LCU:64 - WNMU:40No.1 Lubbock Christian University used a 13-0 run in the opening quarter and an 18-point performance by Maddi Chitsey fueled a 42-16 scoring advantage in the paint, as LCU cruised to a 64-40 Lone Star Conference divisional win over Western New Mexico inside RipGriffin Center.
LCU’s performance revolved around their defense. They held Western New Mexico to a 28.8% shooting mark (15/52) from the field, marking the third time this sea-son LCU held an opponent to a shooting percentage under 30% at home. The 40 points tallied was the fewest by an LCU opponent this season and the fewest since LCU held Arkansas Fort Smith to 29 points on Feb. 14, 2019.
The defensive tone was set early. WNMU scored the first bucket of the game, but then missed their next eight field goal attempts, while LCU went on a 13-0 run to close the quarter with a 13-2 lead. The Mustangs were 1-of-11 (9.1%) from the field in the opening quarter. LCU had a sluggish quarter, going 6-of-18 (33.3%) from the field, but took advantage of seven forced turnovers and five offensive boards to mount up the scoring chances.
The Lady Chaps built their lead in the second quarter, using a 7-1 scoring advan-tage from the free-throw line in the quarter. LCU also used six points in the quarter from Laynee Burr, including an alley-oop style layup off a feed from Ashton Duncan to cap an 8-0 run to close the first half for a 33-12 LCU halftime lead. The Mustangs committed 11 turnovers in the first half, leading to a 12-5 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers.
LCU was quiet with their outside shooting, but in the third quarter, three-pointers by Caitlyn Cunyus and Duncan capped an 11-4 LCU run for a 43-16 lead. WNMU’s Alicia Mardis, who entered the game leading the Mustangs offense, was held with-out a point until a field goal four minutes into the third quarter. She ended up with five points and all five were tallied in the third quarter. Mardis helped WNMU go on an 8-0 run in the quarter, cutting LCU’s lead to 43-24. The run ended prior to the end-of-the-quarter horn, as Cunyus hit a runner prior to time expiring.
Chitsey and Madelyn Turner each had five points in the fourth quarter and the two poured all 10 points during a 10-3 LCU run for a 55-29 advantage with 5:20 remaining. The 10-3 run was part of 17-7 scoring stretch by LCU, which witnessed LCU taking their largest lead of the game (62-33) with 2:19 left. WNMU responded with a late 7-0 scoring run.
LCU finished the game with a 36-29 rebound advantage. Emma Middleton matched a career high for a second straight game with seven rebounds. Chitsey also had seven boards to go along with four assists. She was 8-of-12 from the field for her 18 points, which marked the fourth consecutive game in which she scored at least 16 points. Burr was LCU’s only other player with at least 10 points.
Paulina Rodriguez led WNMU with 10 points and all 10 were scored in the second half. The Mustangs fell to 4-6 overall, 1-5 in conference and 0-2 in division play.
GAME-BY-GAME RESULTS AND HIGHS
Lubbock Christian University BasketballLubbock Christian Game-by-Game Highs (as of Feb 27, 2020)
In 10 seasons at the helm while an NAIA institution, the Lady Chaps made 10 consecutive trips to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament. Coach Gomez’s arrival to the LCU women’s basketball program certainly changed the foundation of the program. In those 10 seasons at the helm, LCU posted a 234-96 record under Gomez in the NAIA.
LCU jumped into NCAA Division II transition in 2013 (membership in 2015) and the results have not changed since transitioning. LCU went a remarkable 25-1 overall in 2013-2014 and they completed the Heartland Conference with a perfect 20-0 mark for their first perfect
conference record in program history. They followed in 2014-2015 claiming Co-Heartland Conference Regular Season title honors after a 15-3 stretch in conference and a 21-7 overall season. That led to a remarkable 2015-2016 season. A season that started off with an exhibition game loss at NCAA Div. I No.1 Connecticut and ended with a perfect 35-0 season in LCU’s first season eligible for NCAA postseason. They went 18-0 in Heartland Conference play to capture a regular season title and then a Heartland Conference Tournament title (first season eligible for the tournament). The Lady Chaps went on to capture a South Central Regional Tournament title and eventually a NCAA Div. II National Title. Gomez claimed WBCA NCAA Div. II National Coach of the Year honors and also spent a portion of the offseason as a court coach at the 2016 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.
2015-16 served as a rebuilding year for the Lady Chaps, who returned one starter off the champion-ship squad. Despite the rebuilding, LCU still went 19-11 overall and 12-4 in conference, en route to the Heartland Conference Tournament championship game, which they lost to St. Edward’s. They bounced back in 2017-18, claiming another Heartland Conference regular season and tournament title, leading to Gomez receiving Heartland Conference Coach of the Year honors. The Lady Chaps hosted the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament for a second time and won the tourna-ment to stamp their second berth towards an NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament loss. They lost to eventual national champion Central Missouri at the tournament held in Sioux Falls, S.D, ending their season with a 31-2 record.
The Lady Chaps returned to the Elite Eight Tournament for the third year in a four-year span in the 2018-19 season after claiming a Heartland Conference regular season and tournament title, along with a NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament championship after wins at Colorado Mesa and at home over Angelo State. LCU made an outstanding run towards their second NCAA Division II National Title, defeating Southwestern Oklahoma State in double overtime to claim the trophy. Gomez, who picked up his third Heartland Coach of the Year honor, became the seventh head coach in NCAA Division II women’s basketball history to claim multiple titles. He also was named Female Team Coach of the Year at the West Texas Sports Persons of the Year Banquet following the season.
In 16 seasons at LCU (the 2019-20 season marks his 17th), Gomez enters the 2019-2020 season with a 397-122 collegiate coaching record. He also enters his squad into Lone Star Conference play for the first time. He completed Heartland Conference play with a 118-17 (.874) overall record.
In their final two seasons in the NAIA (2011-2012, 2012-2013), LCU set program single-season win records in each of the seasons. The Lady Chaps went 31-4 in 2013-2014, setting a program single-season wins mark (31). The Lady Chaps won their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title en route to their final trip to the NAIA National Championship tournament. In 2011-2012, LCU went 28-6 and made their second ever appearance in the Semifinals of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. They lost out to eventual national champions Oklahoma City to mark the second consecutive season in which they lost out to the team who would claim the title. LCU claimed their second Sooner Athletic Conference crown in program history, as they joined Oklahoma City as conference co-champions with a 21-1 record. They handed OCU their only loss of the season. LCU went 25-10 in 2010-2011 and marched into the Elite Eight for a third time in program history. The Lady Chaps, who finished third in the Sooner Athletic Conference, lost in the NAIA National Championship to eventual national champion Azusa Pacific. LCU went 19-12 in the 2009-2010 season, which included a 13-9 finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and had their season come to an end in the National Tournament. The highlight of the season was an exhibition victory inside the United Spirit Arena against Texas Tech University. In 2009-2010, the Lady Chaps finished with a solid 27-7 record and made a trip to the Sweet Sixteen of the National Tournament following a second-place Sooner Athletic Conference season. Gomez chalked up a milestone during the season, becoming the all-time women’s basketball wins leader at LCU. LCU had a memorable 2007-2008 campaign, as the Lady Chaps made another voyage to the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady Chaps completed a 25-10 season, which included a trip to the Elite Eight in the tournament for their second best finish in program history. In 2006-2007, Gomez led the Lady Chaps to a myriad of firsts in their near thirty year history. Lubbock Christian never left the top-10 in the NAIA National Poll, and set a school mark for wins in a season with 26, eclipsing the school mark of 23 they set the prior season. In addition, LCU made its fourth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament, finishing in the Sweet Sixteen and most impressively, the Lady Chaps captured a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season championship, becoming the first school from outside of the State of Oklahoma to do so in the thirty-one years since the conference was founded. In 2005-2006, Gomez’s Lady Chaps enjoyed what was arguably at the time the best season in school history, as they finished with an overall record of 23-12, and made an unparalleled run at the NAIA National Tournament. Seeded sixth in their eight team bracket in the tournament, Gomez’s girls proceeded to oust four of the top six teams in the nation and become the lowest seed ever to reach either the Fab Four or National Championship; appropriately enough, he was named the SAC’s Coach of the Year. In his first season, Gomez’s Lady Chaps went 16-14 and finished fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. While this might appear to be an average year, big wins for the Lady Chaps and entry into the NAIA National Poll for the first time proved good enough for an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament: LCU women’s first trip to the big dance. In his second season, the Lady Chaps were able to maintain that level of success. After getting off to the best conference start since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference at 6-2, LCU finished SAC play at 10-8, good enough for another fifth place finish, and for the second season in a row, Coach Gomez guided the Lady Chaps to the NAIA National Tournament. An LCU graduate, Gomez was a standout perimeter player for Coach John Copeland in the late 1980s, and to this day, he still holds the school record for career free throw percentage at .855. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mathematics and consistently used his degree to teach in the classroom while pursuing coaching on the sidelines. Gomez’s career began at Lubbock Mon-terey High School where he served as an assistant coach in the men’s basketball program from 1988 to 1995. In 1996, Gomez accepted the men’s basketball head coaching position at Lubbock Cooper High School, where he remained until returning to Lubbock Christian University to take over the reigns of the Lady Chaps in 2003. During his seven seasons at Cooper, the basketball program broke new ground making the playoffs four times, managing the school’s first state ranking, and capturing the Pirates only district championship in Gomez’s final season. One of the main reasons Coach Gomez is so successful on the court is the support he receives off of it. Steve has been married to his wife Shawna for 29 years, and the couple has two children: Hayden and Landon.

No.8 Lubbock Christian University used a 21-0 run in the opening quarter to re-lieve any “Senior Day” pressure, and LCU’s defense held Texas A&M – Kingsville to a 17.2% shooting percentage in a 71-29 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday af-ternoon inside Rip Griffin Center. The game was LCU’s final regular season home game, and their 13-0 home mark has their home win streak active at 78 games and their streak of consecutive home conference wins at 66. Runs were aplenty for the Lady Chaps, who was coming off a run-filled victory Thursday against Texas A&M International. Saturday, LCU had a 21-0 run in the first quarter, a 10-0 run in the second quarter and 24-0 run, which started in the second quarter and ended in the fourth quarter. The 21-0 run followed a trio of early lead changes and it consisted of a pair of three-pointers from Allie Schulte, six points from Maddi Chitsey and seven points from Emma Middleton, who fin-ished the first quarter with nine points. TAMUK ended the run with a Treazure Mouton layup as time expired in the quarter to cut LCU’s lead at 25-9. LCU was 58.6% from the field (17/29) in the opening half, while holding TAMUK to 18.5% (5/27) from the field in the span. Five different Lady Chaps connected from long range in the half, and they were 6-of-12 as a team from the distance. Chitsey (11 points) and Schulte (10 points) were each in double figures in the half, and a Lady Chaps 20-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter provided LCU a 45-17 halftime lead. TAMUK went a span of nearly 17 minutes (16:58) without a field goal and missed 25 consecutive attempts. The 25-straight misses were part of a stretch in which they were 1-of-29 (3.4%) and 3-of-40 (7.5%) from the field. LCU’s 24-0 run was during the Javelinas offensive silence, and it included a third quarter scoring advantage of 15-0 to take a 60-17 lead into the final quarter. LCU’s largest lead was 67-20 following a Brylee Winfrey old fashioned three-point play with six minutes remaining in regulation. Despite the sluggish shooting, TAMUK finished the game making four of their final nine shot attempts. The Javelinas finished the game 17.2% (10-of-58) from the field. The mark was the lowest shooting mark by an LCU opponent this season and the lowest since LCU held TAMIU to 12.5% on Feb. 9, 2019 (TAMIU was held to 19 points in that game). The Lady Chaps shot a mark 32.8% better, shooting 50% (28/56) from the field. LCU shot at least 50% for the sixth time in the last seven games. Look-ing in-depth, LCU had a 34-14 scoring advantage in paint-scoring, 18-4 in points-off-turnovers (despite committing two more turnovers than TAMUK), and 16-4 in second-chance scoring. LCU played all 14 players on their roster. No player played more than 17:15 and every player played at least 7:23. Chitsey led all scorers with 15 points (off 7-of-10 shooting). Schulte was LCU’s only other player to finish in double-figures (10 points). The meeting was the first ever between the two programs. With Michael Madrid coaching TAMUK, the game also marked the first time LCU head coach Steve Gomez had ever coached against one of his former assistants. Madrid coached at LCU under Gomez from 2005 to 2010. His TAMUK squad falls to 4-18 overall and 3-17 in LSC play this season.
TURNING POINTAllie Schulte hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening quarter. Her second trey be-gan a sequence in which LCU was 8-of-9 from the field. Four of the eight field goals were from three-point range. TAMUK had two made field goals over the same span. INSIDE THE NUMBERSLCU outscored TAMUK 15-0 in the third quarter. It is first time this season LCU has shutout a team in a single quarter and the second time they have done it since quar-ters were brought into the rules in 2015-16. The last time they had shutout an op-ponent in scoring during a period was Feb. 9, 2019 in Laredo, Texas.
