Stevens tied for 39th, falling short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. As a team, UNM did not qualify for NCAA regionals for the first time in program history. The Lobos had advanced every year since regional play began in 1993. DE ROEY WINS 2013 MW CHAMPIONSHIP - UNM junior Manon De Roey birdied the first playoff hole to win the individual title at the Mountain West women’s golf championships in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Playing the par-5, 521-yard 18th hole, De Roey rolled in an uphill 20-footer for the dramatic victory over UNLV’s Demi Mak. Both players finished 54 holes at 7-over 223 at the Mission Hills Country Club’s Dinah Shore Course (par 72, 6,234 yards). In the playoff, De Roey and Mak both found the right rough off the tee. They laid up and had 100 yards to the flag. De Roey left her approach shot under the hole while Mak was long and had a tough downhill putt. Mak missed her birdie attempt. “It feels really good,” said De Roey of the victory. “I was a little down for three tournaments before Fresno (April 15-16), but I played pretty well there and that helped this week.” De Roey is the first Lobo to claim MW medalist honors since Jodi Ewart in 2010, and the fourth overall since 2000. Ewart won it three times. De Roey, Mak and Nevada’s Nikki Prichard all took turns atop the leaderboard in the final round. De Roey held the outright lead at 4 over after a birdie on 9. She shot 34 on the front, but fell to a 39 on the back, dropping two shots behind Mak. Having to wait almost 90 minutes for Mak to complete her round, De Roey and her Lobo teammates left the course to have lunch. Mak took a one-shot advantage after a birdie at the par-3 17th, but she bogeyed 18 to set up the playoff. A native of Schilde, Belgium, De Roey won UNM’s first tourna- ment of the season last September at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Windsor, Colo. She is just the fourth Lobo to win at least two tournaments in an academic year. Caroline Keggi won three times in 1986-87. Kristi Arrington (1984-85) and Jodi Ewart (2008-09) both won twice. As a team, the Lobos posted their best round of the tournament (306) to finish at 85-over 949 (323-320-306) and move ahead of Colorado State for sixth place in the eight-team field. UNLV (904) won the team championship by 12 shots over Boise State. “It was a good way to finish,” said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo of De Roey’s triumph. “I’m proud of the way we finished, especially senior Beth Buchner.” Junior Sammi Stevens posted her best round of the tourna- ment (75) to finish in 12th place at 231 (78-78-75). nament, Stevens was 1 over on the front nine, but 14 over on the rugged back side. Stevens entered the championships second in the MW with a scoring average of 74.62. De Roey and Stevens were both named first team all-Mountain West. Stevens was also chosen to the squad in 2012. Senior Beth Buchner birdied the first two holes leading to a 75, her best round of the spring. She finished 35th at 246 (86-85-75). Junior Sofia Hoglund finished in a tie for 36th at 249 (84-82-83). Freshman Ira Knopf tied for 39th at 266 (88-87-91).
JUNIOR CLINIC TIME - The 2013 Lobo Junior Golf Clinic will be held June 3-6 and June 10-13 at the UNM Championship Course. Both sessions are from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. daily. The clinics are hosted by UNM men’s coaches Glen Millican and Brian Kortan and women’s coaches Jill Trujillo and Kari Zimmerly. For more information or to volunteer, contact Zimmerly at (505) 505-379-7818, Kortan at (505) 414-4452 or by e-mail at unmgolf@yahoo.com. Online registra-tion is available at lobojuniorgolfcamp.com. GREAT SHOWING FOR EWART SHADOFF - Former Lobo Jodi Ewart Shadoff is showing she belongs at the highest level of ladies professional golf. Now in her second full season on the LPGA Tour, Ewart has missed only three cuts in her brief career while earning more than $345,000. A 2010 UNM graduate and three-time All-American, Ewart Shadoff equaled her best finish by placing in a tie for seventh at this year’s first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. She shot a 5-under 283 (68-72-74-69) at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and had a share of the lead after the first round.
THE BRANCH LAW FIRM CLINIC - UNM women’s golf hosted the annual Branch Law Firm Women’s Golf Clinic March 23, at the UNM Championship Golf Course. The free clinic was open to all levels of women’s golfers. The clinic was taught by UNM head coach Jill Trujillo, who is a certified LPGA/PGA Professional, assistant coach Kari Zimmerly and the Lobo women’s golf team.
HEAD COACH JILL TRUJILLO - A 1990 UNM graduate and golf letterwinner from 1987-90, Jill Trujillo has completed six seasons in charge of the women’s golf program. Trujillo has led New Mexico to five team titles, including three consecutive Mountain West Conference championships from 2008-10, and NCAA postseason five times (2008-12). She was named 2007-08 MWC Coach of the Year. Trujillo was head coach when UNM advanced to the 2007 NCAA Champion-ships at Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lobos finished 22nd at the Championships in 2007, 19th in 2009 and tied for 16th in 2010.
STEVENS MW GOLFER OF THE WEEK...TWICE - For her spring performanc-es at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational and the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Stevens was selected Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week. She placed
third at both events, equaling her best finishes as a Lobo. The Hereford, Texas, native recorded five birdies in each of the final two rounds of the Thompson Invitational on her way to a career-best 54-hole total of 217 (71-73-73). At the Fresno Classic, Stevens finished at 4-over 218 (73-69-76). The 69 in the second round tied a career low.
DE ROEY HAS GREAT FALL SEMESTER - Junior Manon De Roey had a tremendous start to her junior season. She won her first collegiate tournament and set a school record in the process. De Roey opened the season by winning the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Windsor, Colo. She carded a 207 (69-68-70), the lowest 54-hole total by a UNM women’s golfer. The previous record was 208 held by former All-American Jodi Ewart at the 2009 Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course. De Roey finished 9 under, the third best score in relation to par by a Lobo. Ewart was 11 under at the 2009 McGuire while Caroline Keggi finished 10 under at the 1986 Roadrun-ner Invitational at the New Mexico State University course in Las Cruces. While winning the title comfortably by four shots over Texas Tech’s Kimberly Kaufman, De Roey posted the three lowest rounds of her UNM career. She previously shot 71 on three occasions. De Roey was named Mountain West Golfer of the Month for her stellar performances in September. After winning in Colorado, the junior collected her second top 10 finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Sept. 17-18. She posted a 54-hole total of 1-over 220 (75-72-73) to tie for ninth at the UNM Championship Course. In six rounds, De Roey recorded four rounds under par. It’s the first career MW Golfer of the Month award for De Roey.
PROGRAM RECORD FOR GPA - The UNM women’s golf team established a program semester record for highest grade point average last fall with a 3.79 (on a 4.0 scale). It was the highest GPA among the 16 Lobo sports programs during the 2012 fall semester. The previous high for the golf program was 3.78 in the spring of 2005.
MOLLE, SAULNIER, JAEGER SIGN WITH UNM - On Dec. 7, University of New Mexico women’s golf coach Jill Trujillo announced Manon Molle and Eva Saulnier signed national letters of intent to attend UNM as freshmen in the fall of 2013. On April 21, Trujillo announced Katerina Jaeger (ya-gur) had also signed a national letter of intent. Molle is from Bains-sur-Oust, France, in the northwest part of the country. She has been a member of the French Junior National team since she was 14. Molle currently holds an amateur ranking of No. 14 among French women and a handicap of -1.4. She won the 2010 French Junior stroke play championship at 218 (71-75-72), tied for first at the 2011 French Junior Championship at 301 (77-79-72-73) and finished second at the 2012 Irish Girls Junior Championship at 223 (76-72-75). Molle has considerable international experience, com-peting for France in the European Girls Championship and in
matches against Italy, Norway and Spain. She was a member of the European team at the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup in Scot-land, and has played in tournaments in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Scotland and Spain, and two professional events as an amateur. Saulnier, a native of Savonnieres, France, is a top-10 ju-nior player. The left-hander is currently ranked 41st in France with a handicap of -0.4. Saulnier had 10 top-10 finishes in 20 tournaments in 2012, including a 14th place finish at the British Girls Amateur. Her low round was a 67 at the AGF Conseils Trophy tournament at Chiberta Golf Club near Biarritz. Saulnier’s low 54-hole total was 210 (69-73-68) when she won the Grand Prix de Vichy tournament in a four-hole playoff. “We have a real French connection going with Manon and Eva becoming Lobos next season,” said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo. “We’re really excited about them joining us next fall.” A native of Stavanger, Norway - which is located in the far southwestern corner of the country - Jaeger will graduate from St. Svithun VGS in June. She has a 4.0 grade-point-average in high school and was elected to student council four years at St. Svithun. Jaeger played in 17 individual and/or team competitions in 2011-12. In 2011, she won the Titleist Region Tour (70-69=139) and the Titleist Tour No. 3 (73-73-75=221), which is the highest level of competition in Norway for girls under 19. Jaeger was also a member of the winning team at the 2012 Norwegian girl’s team championship. She has competed in tournaments in Germany and Wales as well. In 2010, Jaeger was the top point scorer for her country in the Tinius Cup, a competition between Norway and Sweden played in a Ryder Cup format. For her effort, Jaeger earned a trip to the 2011 Solheim Cup in Ireland. “We’re excited to add Katerina to our class for 2013,” said Trujillo. “She has performed at a high level for several years.” In addition to her golfing skills, Jaeger has competed in tennis and track and field. She has also been part of the Stavanger Theater since 2006. Jaeger has acted in four plays - close to 100 total performances - including “Snow White,”
“Journey to the Christmas Heart,” “The Thousand Hearts,” where she played the lead role, and “The Tempest.”
UNM REMEMBERS PATTY OLLIGES - A great friend and benefactor to the University of New Mexico and the UNM Athletics Department, Patty Olliges (ALL-uh-gus) passed away Oct. 12 at her home in Las Vegas, Nev. She was 74. Most prominently, Olliges provided funding for construc-tion of the Lobo men’s and women’s golf offices at the UNM Championship Golf Course. The Patty Howard Golf Complex was dedicated in September of 2000. “I just want to give back to the University that gave me so much,” Olliges said at the dedication. “UNM gave me an education and a lot of good memories.” An Albuquerque native who attended Highland High School and was a 1961 graduate of UNM, Patty Howard Olliges attended the University when there was no women’s golf team. So, she practiced with the men’s team, coached by Dick McGuire. She played in the 1957 William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, a co-ed tournament at the time, which McGuire started in 1955. Olliges credited McGuire with her becoming such an avid golfer. “I feel fortunate to have gotten to know Patty,” said Paul Krebs, UNM Vice-President for Athletics. “She was a pas-sionate person who had a strong affinity for Albuquerque and Lobo athletics, specifically our golf programs. She made a difference for our student-athletes. Her unfiltered opinions about Lobo athletics made us better.” “Patty was a great friend to the Lobo golf program and the University of New Mexico as a whole,” said UNM head women’s golf coach Jill Trujillo. “She cheered us on even when her health was in decline and was always happy to see us. It is a loss we will feel for a long time.” “You couldn’t find a stronger, more generous supporter of Lobo athletics and our golf programs than Patty Olliges,” said UNM head men’s golf coach Glen Millican. “Patty was
a great alum and she meant a great deal to the University of New Mexico. We will be forever grateful to her and her family for the support they shared with our programs.”
LOBOS AGAIN LAUDED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT - For the fourth time in the past five seasons, the University of New Mexico women’s golf team has been recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) for its academic performance. The Lobos combined to post a 3.735 grade-point-average for the 2011-12 academic year, easily the highest GPA among Mountain West institutions and No. 5 nationally. “I know all of our ladies would like to play professional golf, however, they also know that goal is extremely ambitious,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “They recognize the tremendous value of receiving an education and a degree from The Uni-versity of New Mexico.”
FIVE LOBOS RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMICS - The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) recognized five Lobos as All-American Scholars for 2011-12. Beth Buchner, Rebecca Hellbom, Sofia Hoglund, Sarah Salvo and Sammi Stevens all met the criteria requiring a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.50. UNM women’s golf has had at least two NGCA All-American scholars every year since 2005. Hellbom received the accolade for the fourth straight year. Buchner was recognized for the third straight season, Salvo her second in a row while Hoglund and Stevens are first-time honorees. The same quintet received the 2011-12 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is one of the highest ac-ademic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

Since its membership in a conference, be it the High Country Athletic, the Western Athletic or now the Mountain West, New Mexico has set the standard for attaining postseason hardware. Since 1982, UNM has won a conference championship an unprecedented 16 times and it has taken second on six occasions. UNM claimed two InterMountain-AIAW Re-gional titles (1980, 1981) before joining the High Country Athletic Conference in 1982. New Mexico’s first conference championship arrived in 1982 as a member of the HCAC. The Lobos went on to win four more HCAC titles in 1983, ‘84, ‘87 and ‘88 before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 1991. The Lobos won four straight WAC champi-onships from 1993-96. The domination has continued in the Moun-tain West Conference with UNM taking seven
championships in 13 seasons, including three straight from 2008-10. UNM participants have claimed medalist honors 16 times, Player of the Year honors nine times and Freshman of the Year recognition on nine occasions. Lobo coaches have won seven coach of the year awards, including Jill Trujillo in the Mountain West in 2008. A Lobo has been awarded the MWC Player of the Year trophy on seven occasions, including four straight seasons by Jodi Ewart from 2007-10. Ryley Webb won the inaugural honor in 2000, while Kailin Downs garnered the award in 2002 and 2003. Five players earned Freshman of the Year honors (Kristi Larsen, Kailin Downs, Ashley Rol-lins, Mikaela Backstedt and Jodi Ewart). Ewart won the MWC individual title in 2007, ‘08 and ‘10, becoming the first player to claim the
crown three times. As a freshman in 2006-07, Ewart capped one of the greatest seasons in school history after setting a new scoring record (73.35). She was also named Freshman of the Year. Prior to 2007 when it came to the awards, UNM had two student-athletes named all-confer-ence, making it six straight years the Lobos placed at least two student-athletes on the all-conference squad. In 2005, Downs made her fourth appearance on the all-conference team, becoming the first player in Mountain West history to be named four times. Ashley Rollins, the 2004 MWC Freshman of the Year, returned to the all-conference team for the second consecutive year, and Christine Fernandez made her first showing on the team for her outstanding junior season.
Jodi Ewart won an unprecedented three MWC titles and was name Player of the Year four times.
