The UAB women’s golf team looks to raise the bar for the 2009-10 season with a blend of veterans and talented new-comers. Head coach Kim Wilcox returns for her eighth season at the helm and is optimistic about the upcoming season.

Although the Blazers do not return any seniors this season, five juniors will pro-vide a plethora of experience for the Green and Gold. Carolyn Cochran head-lines the class, returning to action after receiving a medical redshirt last season. Jaime Brabb and Lindsay Taylor each played in all 10 tournaments during the 2008-09 season, while Emi Boozer and Ashley Looney combined for eight ap-pearances.

“The juniors we have returning will give us a lot of experience and leadership,” Wilcox said. “Between Carolyn, Jaime and Lindsay, we have three solid starts.

Our last two spots will rotate through the whole team.”Despite a one-year hiatus from the links, Cochran’s successful freshman and sopho-more campaigns are reasons to antici-pate another strong year for the Daphne, Ala., native. She has garnered 10 top-20 finishes and already left her mark on the school’s record book. Cochran shot a 71 in the first round of the 2007 Lady Eagle Classic, tying the seventh-best round in UAB history, and her 146 total tied the school’s fifth-best 36-hole score.

“I feel like Carolyn is going to come back strong,” Wilcox said. “I don’t think the year she missed affected her, and I have no doubt that she will exceed what she has done previously. She is a determined individual and missing a year has only made her will even stronger.”

Brabb was one of UAB’s best golfers last season, finishing as the Blazers’ top per-former in three tournaments. She also carded UAB’s second-best finish in three tournaments, making her one of the most consistent golfers on the team.

“It just seems like we can always count on Jaime,” Wilcox said. “She is consis-tent and has the potential to get even better during her junior year.”

Taylor posted the Blazers’ top score in two tournaments during her sophomore campaign. She place ninth at the Towson Invitational, her best career finish, then followed that performance by shooting a

74 in the first round of the USF-Water-lefe Invitational to match her career-best. Her 81.04 average last season is the best of the Blazers returning this year.

“Between Jaime and Lindsay, they’re going to be really competitive,” Wilcox said. “They will push each other and that will help both of them strive to be the best.”

Although Boozer only appeared in three tournaments last year, the experience she gained will help her earn even more play-ing time during her junior campaign.

Looney saw action in five tournaments in the 2008-09 season. She carded a ca-reer-best round at the USF-Waterlefe In-vitational with a score of 80 en route to a career-best 36-hole total of 170. At the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate, Looney shot a 54-hole career-best of 265.

“Emi and Ashley always offer stability to the team because they’re even-keeled and level-headed,” Wilcox said. “Both of them work very hard and will be impor-tant assets to the team this year.”

Junior Carolyn Cochran returns to the links after receiving a medical redshirt last season.

Junior Jaime Brabb finished as the Blazers’ top performer in three tournaments last year.

In addition to the junior class, Kristin Lottman, the lone sophomore on the squad, also gained valuable experience during her freshman campaign. Lottman appeared in three tournaments last year.

“Kristin has really high expectations for golf and school,” Wilcox said. “She’s very similar to Carolyn in my mind. Kristin is an extremely hard worker, and she’s get-ting better and better because she has a desire to play and be competitive.”

UAB also adds a trio of freshmen to this year’s squad. Sloan Davis, Lindsey Gip-son and Ana Martin will don the Green and Gold for the 2009-10 season.

Davis joins the Blazers from Decatur, Ala., and brings along three years of state championship experience. She finished eighth at the 2009 Alabama State Cham-

pionship and won back-to-back Section 4 titles while at Aus-tin High School.

Gipson, a native of Woodstock, Ga., led Sequoyah High School to four straight county champion-ships. She also won the region tourna-ment as a junior.

“Sloan and Lindsey have a lot of regional experience, which is good when moving on to play at the col-legiate level,” Wilcox said. “If they keep working hard and practicing, they have the potential to really contribute at some of the tournaments this year.”

Martin hales from Canary Islands, Spain. Although she did not play in high school, Martin brings untapped poten-tial to the links.

“Ana’s got a really good short game,” Wilcox said. “She’s a long way from home, but the longer she is here, the more comfortable she’ll be with these surroundings and the better her game will become.”

The Blazers will compete in eight regular season events in addition to this year’s Conference USA Championship. UAB will make the rounds throughout the south, competing in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida for four fall and four spring events.

The Blazers begin the season Sept. 19-20 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C. Less than a month later, they will travel to Bradenton, Fla.

to compete in the Waterlefe Invitational Oct. 5-6.

UAB will then have thirteen days to prepare for the Wendy’s Invitational in Charleston, S.C., Oct. 19-20. Before ending their fall 2009 season, the Blazers will host their fourth annual UAB Fall Beach Blast in Gulf Shores, Ala., Nov. 2-3.The Blazers’ 2010 spring season will con-sist of four different events throughout the month of March. For the fourth con-secutive year, UAB will compete in the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational located in Azalea City, Ala., March 1-2 to kick off the spring season.

The March frenzy will continue March 11-12 in Ocala, Fla., for the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate. Three days later, the Blazers will compete in the Samford Intercollegiate March 15-16 in Oneonta, Ala.

UAB is scheduled to travel to Crystal River, Fla., to compete in the UC Spring Invitational March 26-27 to wrap up the spring season before traveling to the Conference USA Championships April 18-20 in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Junior Lindsay Taylor led UAB in two tournaments during 2008-09 and finished the season with an 81.04 average, the best of the Blazers returning this year.

Junior Ashley Looney appeared in five tournaments for UAB last season and carded a career-best 36-hole score of 170 at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational.

Head coach Kim Wilcox is in her eighth season at the forefront of the UAB wom-en’s golf program. Since her arrival in 2002, Wilcox has overseen a turnaround with the Blazers, guiding them from being ranked in the lower portion of the 100-200 best NCAA Division I programs at the end of the 2002-03 season, to breaking the top-100 after an outstanding fall in 2004. The Blazers entered the fall of 2004 as the 98th-best team in America, according to GolfStat. After the team’s outstand-ing fall season, the Blazers entered the spring of 2005 ranked 62nd overall.

In addition, Wilcox helped guide 2004-05 senior Brooke Mangan to become UAB’s first-ever NCAA Regional Tournament participant, marking the first time UAB women’s golf was invited to the postseason.

Wilcox, who is also the executive director of the Birmingham Golf Association, has compiled a 342-550-10 record in seven seasons as UAB’s head coach. She has coached UAB to three of its five all-time team tournament victories in her short tenure, including a team title at the Lady Eagle Classic in the spring of 2007. She

has also guided individual Blazer golfers to titles on five ocassions.

More impressive is the continued improvement of the team and individual stroke averages of her golf-ers. Individually, every player on Wilcox’s rosters has chipped away at her respective stroke average, proving she is not only a promising team coach, but also an excellent individual instructor.

The team’s success has grown with the individual accomplishments. After a 65-70 season in year one (2002-03), which was highlighted by a South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational Tournament victory for UAB, Wilcox improved the Blazers in year two. The 2003-04 campaign saw the Blazers notch a 76-67-1 overall head-to-head record and finish in the top three at two different tournaments. The Blazers were runners-up at the Miss Louis Season Opener and came in third at the Samford Women’s Intercollegiate. In 2005-06, Wilcox led UAB to unprecedented success as the Blazers won the Miss Louis Season Opener and two different individuals took home tournament titles. UAB added another team title to its collection in 2006-07 by winning the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Classic.

Wilcox began her collegiate golf career by playing on scholarship at Auburn. From there, she became an office manager at Micro National, Inc. from 1983-91, where she was responsible for the accounting and bookkeeping functions.

In 1991, the Birmingham, Ala. native became the club manager and golf pro at the Pine Harbor Golf and Racquet Club in Pell City, Ala. While at Pine Harbor from 1991-99, Wilcox was responsible for the operation of the country club, writing and publishing the monthly newsletter and day-to-day operations. Under her direction, membership grew from 270 to 400.

In 1999, Wilcox left Pine Harbor to become the Executive Director at the Birmingham Golf Association. Her responsibilities include tournament opera-tions, media relations and an extensive junior golf tour each summer with 200 children. While with the Birmingham Golf Association, Wilcox also worked as the media relations and junior golf coordinator for the Dixie Section of the PGA, where she was responsible for running the junior golf program for over 300 children annually. Wilcox also completed an internship at the Alabama Golf Association.

A four-year letterwinner at Auburn, Wilcox was the runner-up in the Alabama State Women’s Amateur Championship in 1988 and won over 50 tournaments as a junior golfer. She has also earned Achievement Certificates in Rules and Tournament Administration from the USGA/PGA in 1993, taught at Gillette LPGA Clinics in Atlanta from 1996-98 and currently conducts annual local junior clinics.

Wilcox and her husband, Bill, have two children, Will and Sarah.

Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Danez Marrable oversees a staff

of seven full-time advisors, a learning specialist and five assistants in the Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center. Their mission is to provide the highest quality of academic support, counseling and guidance to UAB student-athletes by promoting aca-demic excellence, self-responsibility, personal and professional growth.

Marrable and her staff act as a liaison between the student-athlete, coaches and UAB’s academic communities and ensures that student-athletes comply with academic rules established by the university, the NCAA and Conference USA. The staff also coordinates academic programs designed to assist the student-athletes in acquiring a qual-ity education as well as programs to promote personal and career development.

UAB’s Student Services program wants to make certain that student-athletes succeed to

their highest academic ability. Inherent in the program is the philosophy that student-athletes take responsibility for their own growth and development while receiving maximum support. The academic unit’s goals are to prepare student-athletes for viable careers, to assist them in secur-ing degrees and to produce responsible citizens.

The athletic advisors, in conjunction with specific major advisors, work with student-athletes on a regular basis on necessary requirements for their chosen degree. The advisors also help plan class schedules, keeping in mind academic stand-ing, practice, travel and competition schedules. In addition, athletic advisors regularly review the performance and class attendance of all student-athletes to help them keep on pace toward gradu-ation.

In addition, the CHAMPS/Life Skills pro-gram is run through this office. This NCAA program centers around the five commitments (academics, athletics, personal development,

career development and community service) was created to support the student-athlete develop-ment initiatives and enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education.

Finally, the Student-Athlete Advisory Commit-tee (SAAC) is advised through the student services offices. This group, the ‘voice’ of the student-ath-letes, is composed of representatives from each team. At UAB, this group works to promote UAB athletics, organizes community service efforts, pro-vides administration with the voice of the student-athletes and works to ensure student-athlete welfare and success in the Birmingham community.

UAB’s commitment to academic excellence got a boost in the summer of 2008 with the completion of the Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center. Under the direction of athletics director Brian Mackin, and with a generous donation from Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire, UAB was able to completely renovate the academic center and provide first-class facilities to the Blazers’ student-athletes.

Sitting in the middle of UAB’s athletic com-plexes, including Bartow Arena and the foot-ball practice facilities, the Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center serves as the home for overseeing the education-al development and prog-ress toward graduation for all student-athletes.

Academics UAB’s Strength and Conditioning program, the Blazers’ staff and student-athletes can

now boast of having one of the finest facilities around.

The new center opened in January of 2008 and houses a 10,000 square-foot weight room that fea-tures more than 40,000 pounds of free weights.

Strength and conditioning coach Stacey Tor-man and her staff work with members of the Blazer women’s golf team to develop training pro-grams and enhance each athlete’s performance.

Torman has more than 20 years experience in the area of strength and conditioning at UAB and has produced three NSCA All-Americans.

Torman’s work is instrumental in the team’s fitness level and preparation for the season.

Torman and the Blazers moved into their new strength and conditioning area in Bell Gymna-sium, more than tripling the size of the area they had utilized previously in Bartow Arena. The bright and spacious weight room area includes state-of-the-art equipment for weight training, stretching and conditioning workouts.

Torman and the staff use a variety of tech-niques to assist the Blazers in achieving maximum performance and potential. With a heavy empha-sis on Olympic style weightlifting, the program concentrates on speed, power, and strength.

Marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season,

Conference USA is still going strong. From the begin-

ning, dedication to excellence has been the league’s guiding

principle and remains today a common thread for a promis-

ing future. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent,

tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall,

Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB,

UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and

women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and

academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence,

integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our

communities.

All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I-A football, along with several other men’s and

women’s athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships.

C-USA sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country,

football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (bas-

ketball, cross country, golf, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor

track and field and volleyball).

The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner’s Honor Roll

and the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the class-

room. C-USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic

Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award.

Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing student-athletes three

times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-

ing and participation in their elected sport.

SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELD

Conference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league

among the top conferences in the nation.

In addition, 32 volleyball teams, 46 men’s and women’s soccer teams and 22 softball teams

have earned NCAA Tournament bids. C-USA has sent three men’s soccer teams to the NCAA

College Cup, five softball teams to the Women’s College World Series and three volleyball

teams to the Sweet 16.

The league has also had six national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one

national champion in diving and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross

country, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field. Overall, Conference USA teams and

individuals have made more than 500 NCAA appearances.

SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD

C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance among student-

athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation

rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are

champions off the playing field as well. In 14 years, 130 student-athletes earned national ESPN

The Magazine Academic All-America honors, while 461 were named All-District. In addition,

more than 17,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or

received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the

classroom.

C-USA IN THE COMMUNITY

The conference’s footprint is concentrated with 12 members in nine states and a combined

area population of nearly 17 million. More than 1.1 million living alumni represent C-USA

schools across the nation.

With a renewed commitment to community involvement, the conference has begun

development of several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans

and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their

communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations.

GOVERNANCE

Along with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC, Conference USA is one

of the seven conferences having significant representation in the NCAA governance structure.

The Presidents of the member institutions serve as the league’s Board of Directors. R. Gerald

Turner of SMU currently serves as chair of the Board.

A PROUD HISTORY; A PROMISING FUTURE

Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top

conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995 in

Chicago. The league’s charter members included Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston,

Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven

of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in

the fall of 1996.

The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and after nine years, relocated to the

current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002,

succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first commissioner.

C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy

(March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998

and UAB began football play in 1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports

and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003.

Since its formation, C-USA has established a strong foundation, an identity and a history

that reflects the league’s national presence. Fourteen years of remarkable history has reinforced

the league’s position in collegiate athletics, setting the course for the next decade and beyond.
