SECURITY
Natural Stone FenceThis wall is composed of natural stone that blends well in to the landscape. Layers of vegetation around the wall help create a more inviting atmosphere.
Tall trees with thorns and large leaves provide pro-tection from outsiders, while restricting sightlines to the exterior. In conjunction with barbed fencing the ornamental trees create unique and aesthetically pleasing security.

SPIRITUAL SPACES
Convent Statue HallAlthough the statue hall of the Convent is open to the environment, painted white panels are used to re-strict sightlines to the neighboring city; which works to focus attention on the relic statues.
Outdoor furniture composed of heavy stone and concrete requires low maintenance and provides a place for contemplation that will never be moved.

PASSIVE SYSTEMS
Glass Louvers at OIOperable louvers are useful for controlling wind flows as well as direct light. Utilizing louvers in a clerestory will allow the user to prevent driving rain from entering the building.
Water channels on site will allow for the collection and retention of rain water as well as provide erosion control around the foundation of the building.

LIGHTING + SHADE
Impermeable TrellisThis trellis assembly utilizes corrguated plastic sheets to provide ample shelter from rain. Fabric andvegetation are both used to hide the plastic as well has baffle noise caused by rain.
The trellis structure at Xalteva park is composed of brick columns and reinforced concrete beams. The openess of the structure allows the veranera tree to grow and integrate itself in to the design.

LOCAL TYPOLOGY
Veranda ConditionThe porch condition is a common feature of both ru-ral and urban typologies. The depth of this space will vary its use as a large gathering space or a quieter space that can accomodate a few people.
Similar to the organization of Granada, the roof line of the adjacent class modules with convey a sense of community when viewed from the surrounding neighborhoods.

PROGRAMMATIC RELATIONS
Household Courtyard and Water ChannelThe threshold between indoor and outdoor could be mediated by a landscaping feature that controls water around the perimeter of building, establishing a clear boundary between the two spaces.
Although tropical wood is expensive and hard to come by, this basic composition creates an effective screen wall that still allows airflow through the space. With proper maintenance, a less expensive wood could be used.

Cecropia AngustifoliaPlacing smaller trees and plants between class-rooms provide a buffer for sound transmission while distinguishing the different classroom spaces and entrances.
Larger trees provide a visual buffer in addition to sound buffer. Decorative trees with large canopys also create a cooler atmoshphere.

Flor de avispa/ HibiscusFast-growing, ornamental flowers growing over trellises provide shading for outdoor classrooms and corridors. Creating permeable or impermeable spaces depending on the layering of the trellises.
Trees with large canopies and height provide shading and natural comfort zones. Arranged in central or outlying areas create either gathering spaces or areas for personal reflection.

Volcanic Rock Wall with VegetationUsed as a retaining wall near arroyos and areas of erosion volcanic rock with vegetation creates an aesthetically pleasing way to hold soil in place form-ing manageable terraced areas for agriculture and circulation.
Growing plants that help with erosion-control and soil stability on sloping topography creates natural erosion controlled areas without the need of terrac-ing.

ORNAMENTAL
Bougainvillea/VeraneraDecorative ornamental flowers planted around circu-lation paths frame entrances and corridors. Designed in conjunction with brick, chiltepe, or stone walkways create more formal pathways.
Using ornamental trees to form entrances and circulation paths from the community of El Pantanal into and around the site creates visual boundaries to control flows of people.
