Government of Thailand Advises RiceFarmers to Grow Taro Instead of Rice toCope with Water ShortagesNov 10, 2015

The government of Thailand is advising the rice farmers in the Central provinces to grow taroinstead of rice in this season due to water shortages in the Chao Phraya River basin, according toXinhua.

An official from the Rice Department told local sources that farmers are being encouraged togrow taro, which will yield more income than rice. "Taro can bring up more income than rice. For instance, one ton of taro currently sells for an average of 25,000 baht (about 694 U.S.dollars), compared to the average price of only 6,500 baht (about 180 U.S. dollars) for a ton ofrice," he said.

Farmers are essentially advised to grow less water-consuming plants. The Rice Department isalso discouraging farmers from growing second and third crops to contain severe drought

problems. The Prime Minister recently noted that the current water problem has arisen due tofarmers growing more rice crops in a year, which are said to have demanded large volumes ofwater from major dams in the north. He reportedly instructed officials to restrict irrigation water

for extra crops in the central region since last year.

The extending drought conditions are likely to lower the Thai paddy rice production to around22.98 million tons in 2015-16, down about 30% from around 32.62 million tons last year

The U.S. cash market was weaker again today after the USDA World Agriculture Supply andDemand Estimate report showed that 2015/2016 global ending stocks increased 3% from the lastreport as consumption falls in China and India.

The USDA left their 2015/2016 long grain ending stocks figure unchanged from last month at21.8 million cwt (0.99 million tons) however there were a few changes made to the US longgrain balance sheet.

They increased their domestic use and export figures both by 1.0 million cwt (45,360 tons),which some in the industry had expected, however this was completely offset by a 2.0 million

cwt (90,719 tons) increase in production on account of greater yields, which almost no one hadexpected.

The USDA also decreased their average on farm price for long grain paddy from $12.80-$13.80 per cwt ($282-$304 per ton) back to $11.50-12.50 per cwt ($254-$276 per ton) which was whatthey had forecasted in their September report.
