Background ( excerpt from signals and systems by Bernd Girod, the first two paragraphs of preface ) Analysing and designing systems with the help

of suitable mathematical tools is extraordinarily important for engineers. Accordingly, systems theory is a part of the core curriculum of modern electrical engineering and serves as the foundation of a large number of subdisciplines. Indeed, access to specialised areas of electrical engineering demands a mastery of systems theory.

Unit 4 Signals, Linear Systems, and Convolution Background Words and expressions Text and notes Grammar Exercises Reading material.

Background An introduction to systems theory logically

begins with the simplest abstraction: linear, time-invariant systems. We find applications of such systems everywhere, and their theory has attained advanced maturity and elegance. For students who are confronted with the theory of linear, time-invariant systems for the first time, the subject unfortunately can prove difficult, and if the required and deserved academic progress does not materialise( 实现 ), the subject might be downright unpopular.

Unit 4 Signals, Linear Systems, and Convolution Background Words and expressions Text and notes Grammar Exercises Reading material.

Background This could be due to the abstract nature of the

subject area coupled with the deductive( 演绎 ) and unclear presentation in some lectures. However, since failure to learn the fundamentals of systems theory would have catastrophic repercussions( 影响 ) for many subsequent subjects, the student must persevere ( 坚持 ).

Properties of systems (additional) Invertibility: a system is said to be invertible if distinct inputs

result in distinct outputs.

Memory: a system has memory if its output at time t0,y(t0), depends on input values other than x(t0). Otherwise, the system is memoryless.

Causality: a system is causal if the output at any time t0 is dependent on the input only for t<=t0.

Stability: a system is stable if the output remains bounded for any bounded input.

Time invariance: a system is said to be time invariant if a time shift in the input signal results only in the same time shift in the output signal.

Instead, we must find some ways of making a finite number of measurements that allow us to infer how the system will respond to other inputs that we have not yet measured.

Text and notes

The type of signal which depends on one independent variable, namely, time is called the one-dimensional signal. It can be represented by x(t).

Text and notes

When the responses to the identical stimulus presented shifted in time are the same, except for the corresponding shift in time, then we have a special kind of linear system called a shift-invariant linear system.

While this conclusion is not a rigorous mathematical proof, the level of confidence is justifiably high.

Text and notes

For any shift-invariant linear system T, once we know its impulse response h(t) (that is, its response to a unit impulse), we can forget about T entirely, and just add up scaled and shifted copies of h(t) to calculate the response of T to any input whatsoever.

Text and notes

While superposition and convolution may sound a little abstract, there is an equivalent statement that will make it concrete :a system is a shift-invariant, linear system if and only if the responses are a weighted sum of the inputs.
