NEW
GRANDPARENTS!!
Congratulations to Annette & Brian
Mansfield on the arrival of baby Ellis on February
8.
He couldn’t wait for hospital and was
born in the bathroom with the help of his father,
midwife and of course his mother!
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
'Rotary serving humanity’
Congratulations to the Paddlefest
Committee and all in the club who helped
make Paddlefest 2017 such a success.
I was surprised and disappointed that
Hunter Life Education did not consult our
club on the use of the name “Jazz on the Line”
for their fund raiser on Sunday 2 April. Some
members believe that they should use another
name.
In pitching their event to our club for
support after publication of the flyer HLE
have misjudged their line and length.
We wish HLE all the best with their
event as we are all too aware of how fragile
event management success can be.
When I was approached to become
President, I was reluctant to take on the role
given the internal politics that all clubs have.
The reality is that whilst there will be
consensus, not everyone will agree. I would
encourage anyone who has not taken on a
Rotary leadership role to consider taking the
role of incoming President on the basis that it
will be one of many interests, and time
resources will be allocated accordingly. In conclusion, we wish Malcolm and
Michelle all the best renting at Gloucester whilst
their new home at Chichester is built. With a local
contact, we may be able to organise to rent some
cottages at Chichester for a weekend retreat.

PADDLEFEST 2017
Getting the site prepared in Speers Point
Park on 27th February was a good indication of
trouble ahead! Erecting power cables, siting &
loading the catering & cold van in the pouring rain
was challenging – made more so when an errant
mobile home driver knocked down a cable (& lost
his antenna). When a storm cell settled over
Toronto & Lake Macquarie at 4.30am we thought
it was the finishing touch to 12mths preparation!
At 6am we all felt for the responsibility of
our leader Pam and Safety Officer Paul who
studied the radar and the patches of blue sky + no
rain and made the call to go ahead.
A good decision as all events were able to proceed
with Kayak races+ several Outrigger & Dragon
boat heats.
A highlight once again was the
involvement of the Cub Scouts building and
subsequently sailing their Dragon boats. These 8 -
11 yr. olds built their boats from milk crates, bread
crates, lengths of bamboo, cable ties, garden
plastic, stretch wrap and tape.
A separate Paddlefest edition will follow
once photos are sorted (sorry publisher Sue!).
Many congratulations to Pam Dean-Jones
for her quiet, gentle guidance and to the Paddlefest
committee, the club and the participants – not
forgetting our Master of Ceremonies Bill Grundy.
There will be a final reckoning but it looks
like a profit of $14,000 was made which will
benefit the John Hunter Youth Mental Health Unit
and also the Cancer Council Enrich Program.
Well done everyone! Here are a few
photos to whet your appetite!!

14/02/2017 - VISIT FROM DGE
HELEN RYAN
We had the pleasure of the company of
Helen and husband Mike at our meeting on this
day. Helen is the incoming DG for 2017/18. The
District Changeover is on 1 July 2017.
Helen & Mike spoke warmly of their
weeks DG training in San Diego. The Intern
Assembly was very well run, simple, efficient
with excellent speakers, facilitators and great
camaraderie. The lack of ‘razzamatazz’ was
notable.
The knowledge of the great and well
respected global work of Rotary was reinforced
and Helen wants to share her enthusiasm with the
clubs in District 5670 and promote Australian R I
President Riseley’s theme ‘Rotarians making a
Difference’.
One downside to their visit to USA was a
severe case of ‘Trumpitis’!!

24/02/2017 - NEW GENERATIONS
PROGRAM
New Generations participant Bree Jacobs
attended the meeting to introduce herself to our
club as her sponsor in the program.
British Colombia, possibly Vancouver is
to be her destination in April with the aim to
further her experience in Human Rights
Advocacy.
Bree has three degrees – Law,
Criminology and Arts and also has experience in
working in IT at the university.
In her career, as well as working in IT,
Bree had worked at Northern Settlement Services
assisting migrants with resettlement into the
community and providing social outreach.
Tutoring international students, student advocacy
and volunteering at Bravehearts Orphanage in
Cambodia are all part of her impressive CV, but
Bree’s main passion is in Human Rights
Advocacy and she is looking to forge a career path
in that direction.
Good luck Bree, we look forward to the
presentation on her return.
Postscript: A question was put to Bree about the need
for social activities for the International students.
This question reflected an event the club organised
years ago, when we provided a BBQ/picnic for
international students from the university.
Bree said there is a 6 mth. program of
intensive English for International students to
transition into a regular university course.
The feeling was that the social interaction
would be appreciated and be a benefit for their
English. It would also provide an outlet that many
do not get as most are not wealthy and able to
access leisure activities easily.
Maybe an opportunity for a club project??
The university Friendship Society maybe the point
of contact.

ONGOING PROJECTS
Westlakes Youth Driver Program
Since Bernadette left we
have only one driving
instructor, Barry Doherty, to
provide the qualified
instruction our young
learner drivers need. When
completing their required
log of hours, one hour from Barry is equal to 10
hours in the log book. Barry is very busy in his
business at present and can’t contribute as much
time as he would like.
Rhonda is doing an excellent job at Toronto
High School and currently is taking 8 students out
on a regular basis to build up their driving skills,
but she does not want to take the Instructor course.
We will have the chance to meet Rhonda and show
our appreciation of her good work when she
comes to our meeting on April 4.
So please take note of the Positions
Vacant and consider getting the Certificate IV in
Transport & Logistics. It will help some young
people have easier access to jobs, study and
training opportunities.
Bravehearts Orphanage in Cambodia
Please take the time to
read the Bravehearts newsletter
when you get them online. It is
full of updates and information
about the orphanage and the
family of residents, staff and
volunteers.
It is often a wake-up call to read about the
basic requirements that are needed, with items we
take for granted as available like nappies and
hygiene supplies.
Annette Trotter and Sue Stimson are
going to Cambodia for 2 weeks on March 25th so
we look forward to having a very current picture
of life at Bravehearts on their return.
Cancer Council 'Enrich Program'
Another Enrich program
for cancer survivors and
carers is underway locally,
funded by our club.
It commenced 11 February and continues
weekly until April 1 with 18 participants.
