ON THE CALIFORNIA RIVIERA Silver Anniversary for Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotarians February 20th marked a very special celebration of MBSR’s 25 years of service. There was excitement in the air as we welcomed back past presidents and friends. Hard to believe a quarter of a century had passed since our charter in 1987. President Ellen created an Academy Award-winning slideshow reflecting the lineage of Presidents and a spectacular selection of special photographs of our fellow Rotarians as they participated in Club, Community, Vocational and International Service projects. There was a lot to be proud of! A Special proclamation from the City of Dana Point and a beautiful resolution from assemblywoman Diane Harkey added to the prestige of the occasion. District Governor Jim Lorman presented a district recognition plaque and performed a presidential roll call and Terry Rifkin and Lisa Wilson took us on a walk down Memory Lane. Thank you to all the Club Presidents over the last 25 years for your “Service Above Self,” and thank you to all our Members past and present for creating a footstep in our MBSR legacy, in the Community and the World. President’s Messageby Ellen Turnbull

The 25th Anniversary of Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary…WOW! …what a CELEBRATION! For those of us who have grown up with the club, it was great to visit with old friends, our Past Presidents who are no longer with us. It is amazing, but those Past Presidents still have a “soft spot” in their hearts for our club… the great friendships, shared life experiences, unparalleled community and international service and great memories… for all of us, our club enhances and enlightens our lives.

The 25th Anniversary shared the history of our Club, from our initial fundraiser, A Loving Affair, to our Comedy Nights and LobsterFest to our numerous community and international projects including our award-winning Vocational Days, Saddleback College Scholarships, Senior Thanksgiving Luncheons and charitable community monetary donations. Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary indeed exemplifies Rotary International’s motto of “Service Above Self.”

Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotarians, we are special! Every week, we celebrate our friendship, love, laughter, sweat and tears together. Plus, we celebrate our contributions through experiencing the joys of the fruits of our labor...our therapy horse, Rushmore, at the Shea Center, honoring Youth of the Month at the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley, supporting the Military through the Dana Point 5th Marine Support Group, giving monies and skypeing with the

Jordan Eye Project to learn about our international efforts....plus, we are fortunate to enjoy the fun community activities afforded us with the Festival of Whales events, the Dana Point Grand Prix and newest endeavor, the

There is a saying “The Highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.” Each act of service changes an individual.

The great reward found in our charitable activities is the wonderful feeling of being of service, aiding those in need, and having a great time doing it. The joy of giving feeds and nourishes the soul. Even a small contribution to the lives of others changes you, the person helped, and even the world in ways impossible to predict. Congratulations Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotarians for joining hands in remarkable service, creating friendships that will last a lifetime and have a fantastic time doing it.

And, now we are on to the next 25 years!

Ahoy matey!! Cap’n Salty (Alan Wickstrom) here to tell you the tale that our 4th Annual Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club’s Diamond Dig was our biggest and best Diamond Dig ever!! Hundreds of kid pirates from ages 1 to 100 bought a small white toy shovel to dig for treasures on Sunday, March 4, 2013, at our Diamond Dig at Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor held during the Dana Point Festival of Whales.

Our big winners of the Diamond was a 3-year-old boy named Aaron Marsh. He was with his Mom and Dad (Lisa and Ed) of Dana Point and man, was Mom so happy!! See photo, right.

Dozens of Rotarians and students from the Dana Hills High School Interact Club participated in the 2013 Festival of Whales Parade, Diamond Dig & Whale of a BBQ!!

A special thanks to these Rotarians for going the extra mile this past weekend at the Parade, Diamond Dig and the Whale of a BBQ:

Cyndi Elders (toy pirate) along with her hubby, Handsome Bob, for their tireless collection of donated toys, buying toys with donated cash from Rotarians and friends, organizing the toys into categories and managing the chaos at the toy booth with Marsha Prentice. Cyndi also almost floated away while carrying the giant pirate during the parade.

Anita Houston (money pirate) for watching the cash and managing the toy shovel sales during the event.

John Coffman (parade & pizza pirate) for his amazing Dana Hills Interact Club students who came out in force both days to support the parade (carrying the LARGEST pirate balloon in the parade), Diamond Dig, Pizza booth and Whale of a BBQ.

Mike and Shauna Killebrew (Chief BBQ Pirates) for their tireless efforts and great BBQ skills to make the Whale of a

BBQ a HUGE success. They sold out of food within three hours raising money for MBSR, VFW and the Festival of Whales.

John Baumann (Parade Pirate) for his tireless work to make sure our MBSR Pirates in the Festival of Whales parade had great cars. He also played his guitar and sang wonderful pirate songs for the parade audience the entire time smiling

at the kids and on lookers.

The following AMAZING Rotarians also worked hard at the Festival of Whales parade, Diamond Dig, Interact Pizza Booth or the Whale of a BBQ… Jenna Spizzirri, Jessica Timberlake, Joe Fitzgerald, LaVal Brewer, Marsha

Prentice, Nancy Baumann, Dennis Gabrick, Ricardo Beas, Susan Jeffries, Todd Sandness, Gary Maxwell and Michael Maxwell.

A HUGE thank you to our donors of the diamond

earrings, Marty and Julie Lungo, of Marinelli Fine Jewelry in Monarch Bay Plaza for once again donating the DIAMOND for our event. Without them, we couldn’t call it the DIAMOND DIG!!

All proceeds from these wonderful events will go to support childrens’ charities supported by our Club and this event provides wonderful exposure for Rotary in our area.

Well, this is Cap’n Salty (Alan Wickstrom) sailing off to another Rotary event... thanks to you all for making this year’s Diamond Dig, Parade & BBQ the BEST EVER!!

Save the date!
