Introduction to Campus Crawler

• Purpose:

• Help incoming college freshmen find a school that fits their needs

• Create comparisons between two schools

• Allow users to save a list of schools they’re most interested in

• Potential College Students • High School Juniors and Seniors• Parents or others involved in the

decision

Market Research

• “The American Freshman: National Norms Fall 2012” Survey

• University of California—Los Angeles

• 192,912 first-year students from 238 U.S. four-year colleges and universities

• Students entered college in Fall 2012

Results • 45.6 % of students chose

their university/college based on the amount of Financial assistance they received

• 45.6% of students surveyed felt that the cost of attending college was the 4th most important factor in determining which school to attend

• 38.8 % of students chose their school based on its size

Starting Page

• Search bar at the top will let users begin searching for schools

• Table is auto-populated by locations nearby

Navigation Menu

When the menu icon in the upper left corner is pressed:• The app’s main pages appear in

the menu • The current page’s contents push

to the right• The pages in the drawer link to

Search, About, Top Picks (colleges that have been saved for comparisons)

Search

• Search by state or by school name

• Table will auto-complete as the user types schools

+Selecting from Search Results

Option 1: Select a single school

Displays the results for that school

• Users click the arrow button to the right of the school they’re interested in

• Opens a new page with information about the single school

• Categories can be clicked to get an expanded view

• Button at the bottom can add it to Top Picks

• Link to the school’s webpage is found in the top bar

+Selecting from Search Results

Option 2: Select schools to compare

• If it is their first time using the selection feature, a menu will appear confirming the addition to the list. They will then be prompted to visit the list to begin comparing schools

• If they have already used the selection tool, then the site will allow users to continue selecting schools. A button at the top of the page will then save to Top Picks

• Available apps give limited or unspecific data

• Most don’t allow users to compare

• Users can’t get total data for one school

• None include all of the information available from NCES

• Some have lengthy account registrations or quizzes before you can view schools

Data is updated yearly, so app can be updated

Could be taken over by outside groups with an interest in helping students find the right school U.S. News and World Report CollegePrep NCES

Could be merged with existing college app Admitted.ly College Confidential ACT College Search
