Start with the definition of emotions first:

A physiological experience which manifests itself in neuro-muscular, respiratory,

cardiovascular and hormonal changes including modifications in thought and

behavior.

Emotional Intelligence is:

Your ability to recognize and understand emotions, and your skill at using

this awareness to manage yourself and your relationships with others.

IQ VS. EQ

IQ is cognitive intelligence. This is the intelligence that

people are generally most familiar with, as it is the type

this is most often referred to when the word

“intelligence” is used. It is also the type that is most

often measured through testing and estimated through

things like grade point averages.

EQ is emotional intelligence, which as we just learned

is all about identifying emotions (in ourselves and

others), relating to others, and communicating about

our feelings.

Social Awareness is the ability to recognize triggers and emotions in others – we often say how well can you “read the room”?

Inappropriate / Out of Place Behavior versus alignment with people and the surroundings.

With your group please either share an example of when you misread a situation OR some strategies on how to uncover what’s really going on with someone else.

Ask a colleague if they’d prefer video or a phone call to connect

Ask questions one on one versus as part of a large group

Really be present… avoid distraction of phone, texts, IM’s – even if you can only do

that for a few minutes

If you’ve used assessments with your teammates – go back and read about their

profiles

Practice active listening… “so if I understand you correctly… OR “so if I heard you

correctly…” “Did I get it right – is that what you meant…?”
