This program is especially designed around the unique challenges facing our soldierswho have been injured in the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan.

About Our ProjectTheWoundedWarriors TBI Project is a collaborative effort betweenGrand Valley State University and Mary Free Bed RehabilitationHospital,with funding from the Department of Defense. There is nocost to the wounded warrior for care received through this project. Allclinical services are offered through Mary Free Bed by clinicians withexperience in the treatment of traumatic brain injury. The project alsoincludes a research component with additional training of Mary FreeBed staff with regard to the unique needs of those who sustainedinjuries during military service. Active involvement of the woundedwarrior and his/her family is encouraged in the treatment planningprocess.

Purpose of the projectThis project provides outpatientrehabilitation services to woundedwarriors with traumatic brain injuryaddressing their physical, cognitive, andpsychosocial needs. These services arenot intended to replace or duplicateexisting care through the VA or Vet Cen-

ter. Instead, this project offers complemen-tary care, at no cost,with an emphasis on

returning wounded warriors to their home and work

communities. A full range of rehabilitation services is offered based oneachwoundedwarrior’s needs. Adjustment counseling for conditionsthat may co-occur or overlap with traumatic brain injury (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD) is also available. However, the uniquepurpose of this project is to provide opportunities for community-based intervention. These may include but are not limited to:

• Driver rehabilitation

• On-site job evaluation and coaching

• Group and family support

Eligibility for the Project

• Military service in Iraq or Afghanistan within the past two years

• Experienced a traumatic brain injury during that same time

• No pre-existing neurological or psychiatric conditionsNote: current PTSD does not prohibit participation in this program

• Ability to speak English
