Army Staff Sergeant Brian Mast deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and worked as a bomb disposal expert under the elite Joint Special Operations Command. The last improvised explosive device that he found resulted in catastrophic injuries, which included the loss of both of his legs.
While lying in bed recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center, Brian’s father gave him advice that has stuck with him to this day--to ensure the greatest service he gave to our country and the best example he set for his children was still ahead of him. Brian took this advice to heart and dedicated himself to finding new ways to serve our country and his community.
Brian remained on active duty following the injuries and provided expertise to the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms during his recovery process. After
his retirement from the Army, he continued working in counter-terrorism and national defense as an Explosive Specialist with the Department of Homeland Security. Brian subsequently received a degree from Harvard University and volunteered to serve alongside the Israel Defense Forces to show support for the freedom Israel represents throughout the Middle East and the world.
SSG Brian Mast is serving his second term in the United States Congress and is on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Transportation Committee. Prior to his election to Congress, Brian followed in his father’s footsteps by serving in the U.S. Army for more than 12 years, earning medals including The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart Medal, and The Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

HELPING A HERO.ORGWounded Hero Home Program
The Wounded Hero Home Program is our signature homebuilding program for severely wounded warriors injured in the post 9-11 Global War on Terror. Helping a Hero homes are designed with the specific veteran’s injuries in mind. Adaptations vary for each wounded hero and the home is designed to maximize the veteran’s independence, subject to the project budget constraints. Homes for amputees and wheelchair bound veterans include roll in showers, roll under sinks, an adapted toilet area and other safety features. Burn victims have often lost their cilia and have lost their sweat glands where they were burned, necessitating the interior temperature in their home be kept at 68 degrees.
Ordinarily homes are built in master planned communities where the developer donates the lot and the builder builds at cost. Helping a Hero contributes up to $100,000 in cash, assists in soliciting in kind donations and assembles the team for the project. The veteran commits to make the Helping a Hero home his/her primary residence for 10 years, contributes $50,000 minimum to the home and if eligible, the veteran commits the VA Specially Adapted Housing Grant to the project. To date, Helping a Hero has awarded over 100 homes in 22 states and is accepting applications for 2020 homes.
HM3 Jennifer Penn, USN (Ret) and SPC Jay Briseno, USAR (Ret) had one thing in common. They both needed a full time caregiver in the home to care for them after they were injured in Iraq. Jennifer was the mother of 2 and needed her parents to move in to care for her. Jay was semi conscious and couldn’t even communicate as he had been shot in the head at point blank range. Jay’s parents quit their jobs and cared for him for 16 years. Jay’s Helping a Hero home included a 250 sq foot bathroom that allowed him to be moved with a lift system from his hospital bed to a shower bed. He was on oxygen and had a ventilator. And he had a 24 hour telehealth machine that kept in constant communication with the doctors. Before moving
into his Helping a Hero home, he was rushed to the hospital at least 8 times per year where the doctors fought to save his life. When Jay moved into his Helping a Hero home that included a therapy room and was designed to make his bedroom a clean room, he didn’t make an emergency visit to the hospital for over 3 years.
Jennifer’s home was built in honor of Houston Astros’ owner Jim Crane. “I am so grateful to have this beautiful home that was built for me and my family. Because of the support of Mr. Crane and Mr. Jenness, I along with so many wounded warriors are able to thrive and not just survive.” said Jennifer Penn.
Our Gala this year is dedicated to SGT Eric Lund, USA (Ret) who moved into his Helping a Hero home in 2014 and recently underwent a successful double arm transplant.
Eric joined the National Guard when he was 19 and deployed on his first tour to Iraq with Charlie Company. Unbeknownst to him, he would return from that deployment without his arms. When he was hit with the IED, he suffered multiple fractures including pelvic, back, orbital, jaw, nose, etc… and lost both arms above the elbow.
Helping a Hero built his home with an automatic shower and an automatic toilet to replace everything he would normally do with his hands. Eric learned to type
with his toes and had built a successful life adjusting to his new normal. He waited 4 years on the Johns Hopkins transplant list and finally received a double arm transplant last year. His tenacity, courage and perseverance is truly an inspiration to us all. He is learning to use his new arms and is very proud that he is able to hold a golf club again.
Helping a Hero exists to help our warriors on their road to recovery by building an adapted home tailored to their specific needs and then encouraging them as they find a new mission in life. We need your help to continue to support them on their road to success!! This is just one of the
“miracle” stories that has come to fruition because of Helping a Hero.
SGT Eric Lund, USA(Ret)
2012 2019 (after double arm transplant)
“Helping a Hero does great work, and that work will continue—with passion and efficiency—under the leadership of Buddy Grantham. Buddy did a great job during his tenure as the leader of the Returning Veterans Initiative during my tenure as mayor.”- The Honorable Bill White, Former Mayor, City of Houston
Colonel E.A. “Buddy” Grantham served as the Audit Chair of the Board of Directors for HelpingaHero.org before accepting the position of Executive Director. COL Grantham has hit the ground running leading the home program and refining the veteran support programs. COL Grantham is a native Houstonian, a graduate of Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets, a retired U. S. Army combat officer and is currently serving as a member of the Texas State Guard where he is the Deputy Commander of the Army Component.
COL Grantham began a twenty plus year career in the U.S. Army as a Cavalry Officer and then transitioned to the sphere of logistics as a Quartermaster Officer while supporting worldwide missions and projects concerning operations, housing,
transportation, fleet management, overall logistics and contracts for military units.
Buddy has over 40 years of experience in managing programs, leading projects, developing training, and providing consulting services to improve organizational performance. He is experienced in building highly productive teams, effectively organizing projects, managing tasks and building coalitions. In 2007, Mayor Bill White asked Buddy to create the City of Houston’s Office of Veteran Affairs. Buddy gained national acclaim by building collaborations within the community and developing programs to assist veterans, active military and homeless.
Buddy has additionally worked as the Assistant Director of the City of Houston’s Fleet Management Department, Senior Vice President of Sunland Group, LLC and Managing Member of GML Solutions, LLC.
