• Use a watering can or hose, not a sprinkler. Much of thewater from sprinklers just evaporates in the air. Wetting theleaves and fruits of your plants can also encourage thedevelopment or spread of plant diseases.

• Bring the hose nozzle or watering can spout close to thesoil at the base of each plant and give it a good soaking.

• Early in the morning and on mild or overcast days. Avoid thehottest days and the hottest time of day (afternoon), whenmore water will evaporate.

• Once or twice a week, for most plants. Daily watering causesplants to develop shallow roots, making them weak anddependent on frequent watering.

How towater

Much of the water used in Brewer Park Community Garden ismunicipal tap water, since our rain barrels don’t collect enough

water to cover all our needs. Purifying and pumping that tap watertakes energy and resources, so we don’t want to waste a drop!
