OUR PURPOSE Redeemer Montclair aims to be a community centered on and propelled by the gospel of
Jesus Christ to serve Montclair and the surrounding communities in word and deed.
This symbol, which is called a TRIQUETRA from the Latin word meaning “three cornere d,”
was used by the early church to represent the Trinity. The three interwoven areas are equal
in size, and each can be distinguished from the other two but cannot be separated without
destroying the figure. This symbolizes that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three
persons of equal power, honor, and glory but are indivisibly one God.
Redeemer Montclair is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. We have strong ties to the Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York City.
REFLECTIONS The basic, fundamental condition of our humanity is God. We’re created by God.
We’re redeemed by God. We’re blessed by God. We’re provided for by God. We’re loved by God. Sin is the denial or ignorance of that basic condition. Sin is the word we use to designate the perverseness of will by which we attempt being our own gods, or making for ourselves other gods. Sin isn’t essentially a moral term, designating items of wrongdoing; it’s a spiritual term, designating our God-avoidance and our god-pretensions.
—Eugene Peterson
Like virtue, sin is a dynamic and progressive phenomenon. Hence its familiar meta-phors; sin is a plague that spreads by contagion or even by quasi-genetic reproduction. It’s a polluted river that keeps branching and rebranching into tributaries. It’s a whole family of fertile and contentious parents, children, and grandchildren.
—Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH — Heidelberg Catechism, Question 26
Q: What do you believe when you say: I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?
A: I believe that the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth and everything in them, who still upholds and rules them by his eternal counsel and providence, is my God and Father because of Christ his Son. I trust him so much that I do not doubt he will provide whatever I need for body and soul, and he will turn to my good whatever adversity he sends me in this sad world. He is able to do this because he is almighty God; he desires to do this because he is a faithful Father.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Through Jesus Christ, Amen.
PRIVATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
RECEIVING OF GRACE — Psalm 32:3-5
3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!

NEW TESTAMENT READING — James 1:12-18, Rev. Brad Bissell
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
PASTORAL PRAYER — Rev. Daniel Ying (followed by the Lord’s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

SERMON TEXT — 2 Samuel 11:1-5, 14-17, 12:1-9, 13-14
1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. 2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.” 16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.
1 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. 4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” 5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” 7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.’”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to you will die.”

of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized and are recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If you are not a Christian, we encourage you not to participate, but to spend this time to consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people, the church.
* NOTE ABOUT COMMUNION WINE AND BREAD The outer ring of the tray contains non-alcoholic grape juice; the other cups contain wine. Gluten free bread is available in the center of the tray.

PRAYERS FOR THOSE NOT TAKING COMMUNION PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might
be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYERS FOR THOSE TAKING COMMUNION PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Christ our God, King of the ages, we thank you for all your good gifts, and
especially now for our share in these pure and life-giving mysteries, through which we have received your body and blood. You, Christ, are the bread of heaven, the cup of salvation, and we give you glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
PRAYER FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SIN Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and
may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

CORONAVIRUS CONCERNSAs a church, we are monitoring the coronavirus threat in our area and will notify our congrega-tion if the need to suspend our Sunday worship services becomes clear. In the meantime, if you or your child exhibit any flu-like symptoms, please consider staying home from church so that you don’t expose others. While you are at church, consider following recommended practices from the CDC: wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue. Please take care when serving yourself coffee or bagels that you do not touch what you do not take. We have placed hand sanitizer in various locations in our church building and will seek to implement as many other wise precautions as we can. Thank you for taking steps to protect yourself and those around you. RIDES NEEDED FOR NANCY JOHNSONNancy Johnson (who is blind) needs rides to church and back home once a month on Sundays. Nancy lives about 10 minutes from the church. In addition, we also need people to give Nancy occasional rides to church at other times or to visit her husband Bill at Lincoln Park Care Center which is about 25 minutes from her home. If you are able to help, please contact Becky Jacobsen at [email protected] for more information.

BABY BOTTLE BOOMERANG – THANK YOU!We are grateful for all the contributions toward this effort to support the First Choice Women’s Resource Center. Our church collected $3,013.
CHURCH MOVING DAY TBDThe dates we plan to move all the furniture, equipment and boxes from the church house into the new building are to be decided. We will communicate moving dates once we know whether we pass building inspections. We will eventually need two teams of people, one on Saturday morning and one on Sunday afternoon.
MEN’S GROUP – MARCH 21Join us Saturday, March 21 in the church house conference room at 7:45AM for coffee and bagels, fellowship and time in God’s Word. Please contact Pastor Brad at [email protected] if you have any questions.
WORKSHOP ON ‘TALKING ABOUT POLITICS AT CHURCH’ – NEXT SUNDAYThe prospect of talking about politics at church makes many anxious. Why and how could we do so lovingly and constructively? Charlie Drew (retired PCA pastor, author, and board member of the Washington, DC-based Center for Christian Civics) believes that the church ought to be the safest place to talk about politics. He also believes that by rising to the challenge we get to be a winsome social surprise in our deeply divided times: we get to draw friends and neighbors to Christ by being the sort of community that sociologists and cynical political pundits cannot explain. On Sunday, March 22, from 12-2PM, Charlie will lead a workshop on this topic. It will include teaching, discussion, and private reflection. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Loretta in the church office, [email protected], so we can plan for lunch, workshop materials, and childcare needs.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY EASTER FELLOWSHIP PICNIC – APRIL 5Join us Palm Sunday, April 5 from 12-2PM for a casual Easter fellowship event at Brookdale Park. Bring your own picnic lunch and we’ll have some backyard games and egg hunts organized by age (toddlers through fourth grade). All are welcome and feel free to extend the invitation to friends. More info and RSVP at tinyurl.com/RMpicnic2020.
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE – APRIL 10In preparation for Easter, please join us for our Tenebrae service on Good Friday, April 10 from 7-8PM. Childcare will be provided for nursery through toddler.
BUILDING PROJECT UPDATEWe are completing final electrical work and awaiting final elevator inspection. The new exit door from the sanctuary is still in progress along with finishing touches in the bathrooms and kitchen. Please pray that we will be able to complete all the punch list items so that we can apply for a temporary certificate of occupancy. Once we are able to move into the new building, we will prepare for demolition of the church house and construction of a parking lot in its place. Please watch your children so they don’t climb the construction fence or try to get into the work site.
