CourseDescription

PastoralcareintheOrthodoxChristiantraditionbeginswithathoroughunderstandingofthehumanpersonintheScripturesandinHolyTradition.OnlywithanunderstandingofhowwearecreatedbyGodandwhatHehascalledustobecomecanweidentifyanddiagnosethesicknessesanddisordersofthefallenstateandapplytheappropriatespiritualcure.

ThiscourseprovidestheologicalfoundationsforthepracticeofpastoralministryintheOrthodoxtraditionbyintroducingstudentstothemostsignificantteachingsinappliedOrthodoxtheologicalanthropology,beginningwiththeCappadocianfathers,MaximustheConfessorandothers.ThecoursewillalsoexploresomecontributionsbymodernscholarssuchasYannaras,Zizioulas,Nellas,Mantzaridis,Behr,Vlachos,andBreckwhohaveenrichedthestudyofthehumanpersoninOrthodoxtraditionandinformedappliedpastoralcare.Thiscoursewillalsocompareandcontrastpracticalanthropologicalideasdevelopedbywestern,moderneraphilosopherssuchasNietzsche,FreudandSartre.Thecourse

willalsoexploresomemodernbioethical,technologicalandsocialissuesthatposenewquestionsregardingthehumanpersonandhavedirectimplicationsforthepracticeofpastoralministry.Studentswillbeevaluatedontheirclassparticipation,ashortpaper(8-10pages)andafinalpaper(15-20pages).

ExpandedCourseDescription

PastoralcareintheOrthodoxChristiantraditionbeginswithathoroughunderstandingofthehumanpersonintheScripturesandinHolyTradition.OnlywithanunderstandingofhowwearecreatedbyGodandwhatHehascalledustobecomecanweidentifyanddiagnosethesicknessesanddisordersofthefallenstateandapplytheappropriatespiritualcure.

TheOrthodoxChristianunderstandingofthehumanpersonstemsprimarilyfromDivineRevelation.IntheologicaltermsthequestionofGodandhumanityaretwoequations.Thefirstisapreconditionfortheother,andtheotherstemsfromthefirst.Thehumanpersonisacreaturethatemergesthroughrelationships,existingandeventuallyreachingitsfullnessindynamicrelationshipwithGodandallcreation.

PracticalOrthodoxChristiantheologicalanthropologyobservesthehumanpersonasacentralbeinginallcreation.Itsimportancestemsfromthefactthatallthingsexistthroughthehumanbeingandinthehumanbeingallcreationaccomplishesitsownsalvation.ThisaccomplishmentisactualizedthroughpersonalfreeunionwiththeuncreatedGod,inChrist.TospeakaboutthehumanpersoninChristianitymeanstospeaknotaboutthehumanbeingitself,independentofGod,theChurchandtheworld,butahumanwhoinfactisapersonthroughwhomtheessentialbondbetweencreationandGodismadepossible.Thesalvationoftheworldthroughthehumanpersonisdiscernedasaservice–liturgy–inwhichthehumanbeingisrealizedasatruepersonthatstrivestobecomeaneternalandunrepeatablebeingincommunionwithGodandtheworldinChrist.Inanyothercontext,thehumanbeingceasestobeaperson,theimageofGodinthegivenworld.ItisinthisfactthatwefindthefundamentaldifferencebetweenOrthodoxChristiananthropologyandmanyotheranthropologiesthatexist.

ThiscourseprovidestheologicalfoundationsforthepracticeofpastoralministryintheOrthodoxtraditionbyintroducingstudentstothemostsignificantteachingsinappliedOrthodoxtheologicalanthropology,beginningwiththeCappadocianfathers,MaximustheConfessorandothers.ThecoursewillalsoexploresomecontributionsbymodernscholarssuchasYannaras,Zizioulas,Nellas,Mantzaridis,Behr,Vlachos,andBreckwhohaveenrichedthestudyofthehumanpersoninOrthodoxtraditionandinformedappliedpastoralcare.Thiscoursewillalsocompareandcontrastpracticalanthropologicalideasdevelopedbywestern,moderneraphilosopherssuchasNietzsche,FreudandSartre.Thecoursewillalsoexploresomemodernbioethical,technologicalandsocialissuesthatposenewquestionsregardingthehumanpersonandhavedirectimplicationsforthepracticeofpastoralministry.

PolicyonLateAssignments

Theinstructorreservestherighttodeductupto2.5%ofthefinalassignmentgradeforeachweekthatanassignmentislate.Studentsaregenerallygranteda‘graceweek’providedtheinstructorisinformedofanyspecialcircumstancesbeforetheassignmentdeadline.

Thispenaltyisnotappliedtostudentswithmedicalorcompassionatedifficulties;studentsfacingsuchdifficultiesarekindlyrequestedtoconsultwiththeirfacultyadvisororbasicdegreedirector,whoshouldmakearecommendationonthemattertotheinstructor.Theabsolutedeadlineforthecourseistheexaminationdayscheduledforthecourse.Studentswhoforexceptionalreasons(forinstance,adeathinthefamilyoraseriousillness)areunabletocompleteworkbythisdatemayrequestanextension(SDF=‘standingdeferred’)beyondtheterm.AnSDFmustberequestedfromtheregistrar’sofficeinthestudent’scollegeofregistrationnolaterthanthelastdayofclassesinwhichthecourseistaken.TheSDF,whenapproved,willhaveamutuallyagreedupondeadlinethatdoesnotextendbeyondtheconclusionofthefollowingterm.IfastudenthasnotcompletedworkbuthasnotbeengrantedanSDF,afinalmarkwillbesubmittedcalculatingazeroforworknotsubmitted.
