EDI TOR’S NOTE
With no qualms at all, I’m dusting off my leathers, furs and python (both faux and real). Many of us dread putting away our summer wardrobes to bring out the cooler weather essentials. We might be swapping out our summer brights for muted tones but this fall, it’s all about texture. Even if you’re feeling monochromatic, you can easily mix and match different textures. ScenePowerball 25: Quarter Life Crisis
Canada’s leading contemporary art gallery, The Power Plant, hosted one of the most rockin’ parties on Toronto’s social calendar: Power Ball 25. Known as the gallery’s largest annual fundraiser, this year’s edition (titled “Quarter-Life Crisis”), attracted a varied crowd of partygoers who support the gallery with funds to the exhibition and public programs.
Over 1,700 revellers had an art attack wherever they were. Installations included two Range Rover Evoques were a “canvas” in an interactive installation, a giant swing hung by a tree with dangling e-readers featured quarter-life crisis literature, Philippe Blanchard constructed sculptural and 2D elements with expanded animation, and Marisa Hoicka had an interactive performance installation based on escapism.
On the dance floor, beats by Alex Merrell and Diego Armand kept attendees dancing all night under the animations of Jesi the Elder. And the roasted bison on a spit (from Marc Thuet) was an added plus for the famished crowd. It wasn’t art-worthy, but it was a feast for the eyes.

Scrubs in the City presents Secret Garden
The Hospital for Sick Kids held their annual Scrubs in the City event at the Evergreen Brick Works and promised a night of enchantment adventurous partygoers...and they delivered.
Guests were introduced to the “Secret Garden” via chilled cocktails and culinary delights, while a performance by Shawn Desman and a dance party that featured DJ Danny Floh Back kept them grooving for hours. And if that wasn’t enough, partygoers gazed at aerial performances, a premier photo wall, an exclusive silent auction and raffle.
Over the past 10 years, Scrubs in the City has been an advocate for The Hospital for Sick Children and has raised more than $1.7 million. This year, the Urgent Care Unit was the beneficiary of the night’s fundraising (visit www.sickkidsfoundation.com/scrubs for more info). While Scrubs in the City promised to a night full of surprises, celebrating a world-class children’s hospital was just an added plus.

Let’s celebrate the hottest charity events of the season.
Fashion Cares 25
Titled “A Night of Glitter and Light,” the 25th anniversary of Fashion Cares was an evening that made every attendee the star of their own (runway) show. Since 1987, Fashion Cares has combined local and international fashion talent in a celebrity studded evening that would raise funds for HIV/AIDS causes. Taking place at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the night was hosted by supermodel Linda Evangelista and Dean and
Dan Caten of fashion label DSquared2, while superstar headliner Elton John and his friends (international musical guests Scissors Sisters, Janelle Monáe, Sky Ferreira) roused the crowd with a roster of local talent that included Devine Brown, Jarvis Church, Jully Black, and Shawn Desman. Putting the fashion in Fashion Cares were runway presentations that included striking looks from the UK (Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh), Milan (DSquared2), Paris (Elie Saab, Stephane Rolland), NYC (The Blondes) and Toronto (Hoax Couture, Izzy Camilleri). Proceeds from the event benefitted Canadian HIV/AIDs foundations nationwide as distributed through the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) as well as the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). A night of sparkle for some can be a lifetime for others.

A Spotlight on two Canadian Designers
Winnipegnative,RoxanneNikki, took a swiftturn from her Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and sociology to start her career in fashion design. She shares a few wise words with us.
How has your Bachelor Degree of Arts inAnthropology and Society helped you become a strongandsuccessfuldesigner?RN:I majored in cultural anthropology at university. My degree was not a conscious precursor to fashion design so I can ‘t say it helped me directly with my fashion career . Growing up in my family, university was just another passage to adulthood. I was always creative, travelled much as a child and was constantly exposed to fashion, art and culture growing up. Fashion, like any art form is a reflection of our society and culture. Everything is connected!
What would you say was your turning point in realizing after graduating from the University of Winnipeg that you could build a career as a FashionDesigner?
RN: It was more of an epiphany actually. I was cramming for my last final exam in the student lounge and all of a sudden it hit me that I should become a fashion designer! It just never occurred to me before that fashion design was a job- it was always just something I did. I am a adventurous person, and, once I get an idea in my head - I go for it. Luckily listening to my instincts then as always takes me where I need to be.
After living in three world renowned cities (Montreal, Paris and Vancouver), where would you say your vision of modern luxury and nonstop chic firstbegan?RN:I have been designing all my life. I am as well a lifelong traveller and constant observer. My vision is born of a natural evolution of my design aesthetic through all the experiences and places I have been in my life combined. ROXANNE NIKKI is for the world citizen, a mix of easy glamour, versatility and modern taste. It doesn’t matter where you live. To be effortless is true chic whether super trendy or classic- this is the heartbeat of my label and vision.
Fashionmeanssomethingdifferenttoeverybody, from the designers and the models to the customers. Asadesigner, whatdoesfashionmeantoyou?RN:Fashion is my art form, and my life dance. Through designing I am able to bring my ideas into the tangible realm, and share my viewpoints with anyone who wants to experience them.

Toronto based designer, Lucian Matis, has been making waves in the fashionindustry since starting Ryerson’s fashiondesignprogramatin2000,toshowinghisfirstcollectionatTorontoFashionWeekin2007. This fashion veteran, tells us whatmatters most to him.
It has been 5 years since you first showedyourcollectionatTorontoFashionWeekandwere the runner up on the first season ofProjectRunwayCanada,sincethenyouhavebecomeoneofthemostwell-knownCanadiandesignersaroundtoday.Doyoufeelthatnowwith such a wide and varied audience that the designingprocesshasbecomemoredifficult
or has it allowed you to experiment more with yourcollections?LM: I do believe in branching out in my design style but I also try to retain the core “Lucian Matis” image intact despite the season and style of the collection I am designing and producing. I thoroughly enjoy expressing myself but also have to keep in mind that real women will be wearing my creations. In fact, the showstopper for my Fall/Winter 2012 collection was also a wedding gown!
What matters to you most as a fashion designer?Whatdoyoudotostaytruetothat?LM:To be as open to beauty, to art, to music and freedom of expression as I possibly can. Creativity is something that I live by and not just in fashion. If I am open to a split second of thought which leads to creativity of some kind, big or small, then I doing my job right. This is more than a dress, shirt, skirt etc. It is translating my art onto someone’s body and hoping they feel equally inspired, as I was when I created it.
If you were given the opportunity to create and present any collection anywhere in the world while working alongside any other designer, whowouldyourdreamcollaboration?LM:Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore but I would have loved to co-create with the late Hubert de Givenchy. His approach to fashion was nothing less than spectacular in my book. He opened up avenues and concepts never explored and knowing my warped sensibilities..I think we would have made a great team.
A Spotlight on two Canadian Designers
With Toronto Fashion Week right around the corner, we decided to sit down and chat with two of our favourite Canadian designers. We picked their brains and they shared a few secrets to their success.

The infectious single “Shake ItOff”, with its inspirational lyrics and choir-backed hook,is part of the must-see live performance the pair and their band have been crafting around the new album. Welsh is an unmistakeable force on stage, eerie andgorgeous with live vocal capability that does her album recordings justice. A Gentleman’s Guide to Scotch
While those who have been drinking Scotch for a while know what to look for when purchasing or tasting a new single malt, this is for those who are interested in branching out and trying something as unique as the distilleries and casks they are stored in. First and foremost we are talking about “Scotch” meaning the whisky must be distilled in one of the many distilleries found throughout the many regions of Scotland (Islay, Speyside, Lowlands, etc). Once you have acquired your single malt of choice, you are going to want to do a classic tasting to truly see and appreciated what it is you are getting in to.
Glassware When doing a tasting ,the most overlooked portion of the experience is often the glassware. While it may seem like a small thing, the shape and volume of the glass plays a role in delivering the aroma and taste to your palate. A proper “nosing” glass will allow the scent to gently waft up the glass and give you its full aromatic experience. While Scotch connoisseurs will often drink their dram from a true Scotch whisky glass with a deep bottom and narrow opening to truly experience the flavours, a solid tumbler glass is the most frequently used glassware for a dram. While a tumbler or rocks glass is usually frowned upon by the Scotch elite, it is possible to find tulip necked tumblers that will help concentrate the scent of the malt, which is truly one of the most important aspects to enjoying a quality single malt.
The Legs That’s right guys, (just like a woman) a well prepared and aged Scotch will have legs for days. When Scotch or any liquor for that matter is swirled in its glass, the “legs” of the drink can then be seen slowly making their way down the side of your glass. The slower the legs trickle back down to the glass is and indication of the length of time the Scotch was bottled, as well as its strength. It should also be noted that the addition of large amounts of caramel can also produce long slow moving legs and should not be the sole method of judging a new malt.
Nosing This is where your proper glassware really shines. Much like each region and distillery, every Scotch is unique, from the taste, the colour, the legs and even the scent. With a proper tulip shaped glass, the narrow opening allows the fragrance to collect at the opening. With all the complexity that goes into making a single malt, many things go into giving it its unique scent which is why when nosing your Scotch, you don’t want to just stick your nose right in the glass. Take your time and allow your nose to hover above your glass. Once you have experienced the starting aroma, take a second sniff to see what notes you can pick out. Does it have a sweet caramel scent? Perhaps it’s a bit lighter with a slight floral fragrance. Whatever it is, each new single malt you try will be completely different in sight, smell and taste.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Scotch Few drinks can conjure up the sense of intimidation like a dram (glass) of Scotch, not just for it’s unique taste but also for it’s abundance of history and etiquette.
Finally, after all of the swirling, eyeballing and sniffing, you finally get to taste your purchase. Scotch is not a drink for you to shoot down like vodka in a college dorm room, nor is it a beer that’s meant to be finished in 10-15 minutes. Scotch is one of the “noble liquors”, it is meant to be sipped and savoured for its complexity. When taking your first sip, be sure to allow it to coat your tongue, giving it the chance to coat your taste buds completely, take note not only of the flavours but the texture. Is it slightly smoky or velvety smooth? While all Scotch is aged in oak casks, the species of oak adds a very different element. A single malt aged in casks previously used to store Sherry (Sherry Casks) will have a different and distinct taste over a single malt aged in casks that once held bourbon (Bourbon Casks).
With all of the history that is behind a quality Scotch Whisky, it’s impossible to jump right in and be an expert, but with a bit of basic knowledge and a willingness to broaden your horizons, you may find a new hobby in Scotch tasting or even hosting your own Scotch tasting between friends to try out new regions and distilleries. Whatever your pleasure, always remember to drink responsibly and never limit yourself from trying new things,

What’s in our Cellar?
Is it rich, velvety and full-bodied or light and fruity? With palates ready, we sat down and examined six different drinks.
Double CrossVodkaSlovakRepublic$59.95
Produced in Slovakia, the makers insist thattheir luxury vodka isseven-times distilled andseven-timesfilteredand made using locally-grown winter wheat and mountain spring water sourced from 200ft.deep aquifers. Its nose is mellow and it has a hint of grain and citrus. It goes down just likea vodka of its calibreshould, but it leaves a slight tingle after swallowed... It must be the diamond dust left over from the filteringprocess.
White OwlWhiskyAlberta, Canada$39.95
Alberta’s Highwood Distillers, a well-knownCanadian Whiskycompany, has produced a fully matured amber whisky, buttheyfilterthecolour out of it. After an initial nosing, you’ll findthat there’s a familiar yet surprising scent - it resembles citrus pop! Although initially, you’ll have hints of citrus fruits, the ending will leave your palate with a light smokeyoak.

Ghouls by Gaslight
It’s the time of year where zombies replace the suits in the financial disrict and the shuffling zombies of the financial district remove their suits and don blood and gore in place of their ties and cufflinks. I’m talking about Halloween, and what is Halloween without a party? Rue-Morgue, Toronto’s #1 source for horror in culture and entertainment is once again hosting their 15th annual Halloween party on October 27th at The Phoenix.
This years party titled Ghouls by Gaslight, will have a Victorian horror theme focusing on turn of the century surgery gone wrong (think Jack the Ripper). This isn’t your typical “dress up and go to a bar” party. The team over at Rue-Morgue constantly pushes the limit with their parties with live stage shows and even designated reptile handling areas in past events. If you have always wanted to go to a one of the most talked about Halloween parties in North America, then this will be an one you won’t want to miss.
Advanced tickets can be purchased at www.Rue-Morgue.com or the Rue-Morgue House of Horror located at 2926 Dundas St. W. for $25 or at the door for $30.Fa

Believe it or not, sometimes “Dress to Impress” is an understatement. At these events, you go big or go home.
Toronto Fashion Week Twice a year, Toronto becomes the fashion mecca of Canada. Getting ready to show their new summer and spring collections, Canadian and international designers will be descending on Toronto from October 22nd-26th at David Pecault Square.
While not as talked about as New York, Paris or Milan, TFW places the well deserved spotlight on some of our countries most talented designers, both established and lesser known. With this years big announcement of IMG purchasing Toronto Fashion Week, Toronto is now in the same handling of those responsible for New York Fashion Week. This will be the season to see just how different things may be heading in the Toronto fashion scene. Will the change in ownership elevate Toronto to one of the major players in terms of international fashion weeks? It’s too early to tell right now but if you want to experience the first IMG run TFW be sure to check out www.worldmastercardfashionweek.com for tickets to the shows when they become available or step backstage and help our cities fashion scene out by volunteering.
