The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is proud to announce the 2009 Formula SAE project: a premier collegiate engineering competition which allows students to apply their engineering concepts in the design and fabrication of a prototype racecar as per Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifications. The students must design and subsequently
test the vehicle to optimize the car for faster and reliable performance.
The IIT Delhi Formula SAE team is a group of budding engineers committed to experiencing high end automotive designing and engineering. Members of the IIT Delhi Formula SAE team (AXLR8R) add a new dimension to their engineering knowledge and expertise during the practical application of their theoretical knowledge in such a project. Students exhibit a high level of dedication and commitment as they juggle their responsibilities to the team with an
intense engineering course load. The SAE IIT Delhi chapter had earlier proved their merit in Formula SAE West, at California Speedway, Fontana, California, USA in 2007, and Formula Student (UK) at Silverstone, Great Britain in 2008 and 2009.

PROLOGUE

What is Formula SAE?
Formula SAE is an international collegiate design competition focused on the design,
manufacturing, and testing of a small formula-style open-wheel racecar. Over 250 teams
from around the world compete in at least one of the eight competitions which are
held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Australia, and
Japan.FSAE India (SUPRA SAE INDIA 2011 , www.suprasaeindia.org) is expected to
be held for the first time in July 2011.
There are very few restrictions on the design of the car, allowing students to express their
knowledge, creativity, and imagination. The cars are judged for their handling, performance,
manufacturability, serviceability, design, cost, and endurance. The team with the highest
cumulative score is declared the winner. Aside from the honors of competing in a world-class
competition, team members take away valuable experience on a meaningful engineering
project which requires exceptional dedication and teamwork.
Dynamic Events (675 points)
Skid Pad: (50 points)
This event tests the cornering capability of
the racecar. The car must travel around a
figure-eight formation as fast as possible
without knocking over any of the cones that
outline the course.
Acceleration: (75 points)
This event tests the ability for the vehicle to
accelerate from rest over a 75 m distance.
The fastest out of four runs is recorded.
Autocross: (150 points)
After being allowed to walk the course for a
set amount of time, drivers must maneuver
the car through the tight turns and slaloms.
Any cones knocked over count as penalties.
Endurance/Fuel Economy: (400 points)
This brutal 22-kilometer race tests the
limits of both car and driver. There is one
mandatory stop for a driver change at the
halfway point. Fuel economy is calculated
and compared with other cars at the finish.

Engineering Design: (150 points)
This event rates the quality of engineering
design used in the development of the
racecar. Judges evaluate the team’s
innovative ideas and also the reasoning and
theory behind the design. During this event,
vehicle test data and analysis are also
scrutinized.
Cost Analysis: (100 points)
Teams must submit a report detailing the
total prototype cost of the vehicle and
capital expenditures (plants, machinery,
and tools) for a limited production run by a
hypothetical manufacturing firm.
Business Presentation: (75 points)
The objective of the presentation event is to
evaluate the team’s ability to develop and
deliver a comprehensive business case that
will convince the executives of a corporation
that the team’s design best meets the
demands of the amateur, weekend
competition.

The team is subdivided into five groups: Suspension & Steering, Engine & Drive train,
Chassis & Bodywork, Brakes & Controls and Marketing & Finance. A group leader heads
each group, with two team leaders overseeing the whole team and providing communication
with the team’s faculty advisor.
Our Aspirations
AXLR8R Formula Racing, just like any other racing team has the ultimate goal of winning. With
this main objective in mind, our team narrows its focus to a group of supporting goals which
serve as guidelines for the team’s functioning and development. Our primary objectives are as
follows:
Student Development – FSAE competition enables students to gain hands-on experience.
The real world management, leadership, and design skills learned through these
competitions cannot be equalled in the classroom.
Interdisciplinary Teamwork – AXLR8R Formula Racing brings together students from
various departments. Our team recognizes the benefits of working as a cross-functional
team and invites all students at IITD to join the FSAE team.
Visibility/Partnerships – As well as providing a two-way relationship between students
and alumni/industry professionals, we extend our network to promote sponsor visibility.
Without support from businesses, civic organizations and individuals, our team would not
be able to compete annually in FSAE. Therefore we feel it is our responsibility to make IITD
FSAE team valuable to sponsors by maintaining strong relationships with them and
integrating sponsor visibility into our team’s foundation.

Our achievements have established a positive reputation for the IIT Delhi team in the
competitive field of FSAE.
We were the first Indian team to participate in FSAE West 2007, California Speedway,
California, USA where we stood 58th overall. We then followed this up with a credible 54th rank at Formula Student (UK), Silverstone, Great Britain, 2008, in a field comprising of 80 teams which was more competitive than the previous year.
We were the first and the only Indian team ever to score in dynamic events at the Formula Student, 2009 i.e. only our car was able to run on the track after passing through tough scrutiny among all the Indian teams.
Our other notable achievements include securing 24th rank in sales presentation in FSAE 2007, 31st and 24th rank in cost presentation in FS 2008 and FS 2009 respectively.
In both years our project was extensively covered by the Indian media including newspapers like Times of India, Hindustan Times and news channels like NDTV, Aaj Tak, etc.
The project was acknowledged and well received in high profile events like Auto Expo 08,
Auto Expo 2010 and the India International Trade Fair 2007.
We have always been complimented by the judges in FSAE for our innovative and effective designing despite our cost constraints.
