Dear Member,
With the Financial Year now ended, it is that time of year for all tax paying members to fill in their returns, and I hope that everyone that does so gets a refund. The Club’s financial year again seems to be on track for another great result, and at the time of this report it appears that the final figure could see another record year.
As I have pointed out in many reports, this Club is successful because of the support that you, the member, gives to your club. This support, combined with the efforts of a proactive Board and superb team of management and staff that are second to none, makes all the difference to the end result. So again, my thanks to all who contribute.
The refurbishment of the Fitness Edge is now complete and members now have a facility that is first class in all aspects. Our facilities, equipment, and service team can be benchmarked with the best, and I hope that all members take advantage of this and utilise this great facility to improve or maintain their fitness goals. More details of the results of the major works are on the following pages. Discussions are still ongoing with Ryde Council in regard to the Hawks site at Eastwood, and the Board is hopeful that a resolution will be reached shortly for the Club to determine in which direction they will proceed.
Our next project is a makeover of the Hawk’s Nest Dining Room, which will be transformed into a Chinese venue. This decision comes about because of the lack of patronage in the area at this time, and in discussion with our caterer we believe that a change of cuisine is better suited to our local area. I should remind those members who do attend regularly that although the menu will be mainly Chinese, there will still be many Aussie dishes included.
Members would be aware the recent campaign by ClubsNSW highlighting the continuing efforts of our industry to help contain problem gambling. Your club is committed to upholding these initiatives.
The new financial year will bring many new challenges with the onset of the Carbon Tax and the full costs that it will no doubt bring. As an example, the Club’s electricity bill alone is expected to increase by nearly 20% or $120,000 in the coming year. The Club is constantly reviewing strategies to reduce consumption or provide energy efficiency, but solutions can’t keep pace with the rising costs. Also on our horizon are further changes to the laws relating to Clubs.
Your Board and Management are taking all these issues on board, and are confident that, with the continued support of our members, we will overcome the many issues that confront us.
K. AGGETTPRESIDENT
The Annual General Meeting of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Willandra Room at the Club on Thursday 22nd November 2012 at 7.30pm.A further notice of the meeting will be sent to all members by 31st October 2012, with copies of the Income Statement and Balance Sheet for the year ended 30th June 2012.NOMINATION FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORSNominations for the position of Director of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Ltd. open on Wednesday 15th August 2012 and close at 7.30pm on Wednesday 29th August 2012.Nomination forms are available on request from the General Manager, and attention is drawn to Article 49(a)ii of the Club’s Constitution, which requries a member of the Club to be a full member of at least 3 years standing as at the opening of nominations, to qualify as a Director of the Club. Attention is also drawn to Article 52 of the Constitution, which requires that a nomination for election of Directors shall be made in writing and signed by two (2) members of the Club and by the nominee, who shall also signify his/her consent to the nomination. Please note also that Article 51(c) of the Club’s Constitution denotes that election is for a two (2) year period. A passport type photo suitable for reproduction in the journal and details of the nominee in 30 words or less should also be supplied. The photo and details submitted by nominees will be printed in the Annual Report, which will be posted to all members by 31st October 2012. An information kit for prospective Directors, outlining duties and responsibilities, can also be obtained from the General Manager. BALLOT FOR THE BOARDThe conduct of an election ballot, if necessary, will take place at the following times:Thursday 15th November 2012 - 12 noon to 8.00pm. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
august sePteMbeR oCtobeR 2012 1
The refurbishment and expansion of the Fitness Edge is now complete. With the original plan commencing in 2010, the concept to completion has taken well over two years.
A review of what we did in that time:
THE PROBLEMS FACED
• Tired change rooms (12 years old) needed refurbishment – a difficult task when you trade up to 17½ hours per day and need wet area access for the swimming pool at all times.
• Facilities that were at stretching point in peak hour.
• Insufficient equipment at peak times.
• A popular centre in need of some ‘new life’.
THE SOLUTIONS
New Change Rooms: The first problem to solve was the change room refurbishment. How could this be done without a major impact on members’ usage and the viability of the centre?
The solution:
•We identified a large amount of storage and maintenance space behind the existing change rooms. We then worked with our architects on a way to build a new change room and provide both wet and dry access to this new area while maintaining access to existing change facilities.
• After solving these problems on paper, we had to then build a new change room and minimise disruption. After completion of this first hurdle we then converted the old female change room into a new male change room and relocated male members. (This was successfully accomplished, albeit with a small step back, giving females use of the new male change rooms while we rectified some flooring issues and other defects in the new female change rooms).
• Convert the old male change room into a family change room, primarily for use by the swim school, but also acting as a back up for the other two change areas for future maintenance.
A New Group Fitness Room and other spaces:
The solution:
Build a new Group Fitness Room by converting a large portion of the previous Hawk’s Lounge and convert the old Group Fitness Room into new spaces for:
• A new second weights room. The additional space provided allowed us to purchase additional items of weight/strength based equipment as well as relocating all the strength equipment from the cardio room. New equipment in this room includes additional pieces of our most popular equipment, as well as some new specialty strength units making the Fitness Edge undoubtedly the best offering for strength based equipment in the area in quality and range.
(continued over the page)

2 www.releagues.com.au
• Provide a superb new massage room for our massage therapists, Michael and Sarah.
• Build a new cycle room, which is now a vibrant new space for members who enjoy this style of cardio exercise.
Cardio Room
The solution
Use the additional space created by the relocation of the weights equipment to our new second weights room and cycle room to provide for another 22 pieces of cardio equipment and a larger stretch area. This extra space and extra equipment now means that members can enjoy their workout even at peak times with minimum or no waiting time.
Reception and Entry
The solution
• Modernise the entry, remove the push open doors (Yeah! Say the mums with prams and strollers) and replace with an auto entry door to provide a good traffic flow for all users, bearing in mind the limitations imposed by an existing 18” inch thick concrete wall that divides the new passageway from adjoining facilities.
• Provide a new reception desk and adjoining office space.
• Provide new electronic timetables (designed by our internal IT guru – well done Jon).
• Provide a new merchandise display unit.
• Generally make the entrance area more inviting for all users.

At the time of writing, the Season is into the nineteenth round and the Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers are just in the top
eight after winning 10 and losing 8 of its matches so far.
The team has used 39 players to date, and this is due to the number of injuries suffered by both the Wests Tigers N.R.L. and the Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood team over
the Season. With so many injuries coach Paul Fletcher has rarely had the same team each week and this makes the task of being consistent very hard, which shows in the results from game to game.
With seven rounds to play, the team must continue to win to remain in the race for the Semis, and every game from now is a “must win”.

A NEW ERA IN DININGWhen RELC opened in 1970 the Club’s Board of Directors at that time saw the need to provide Club members with a fine dining option and opened the Club’s first “Dining Room” or Restaurant. Older members will recall that restaurant being located off the mid landing of the stairs on the way to the Auditorium. In 1988 a new restaurant was built and the operation moved to its current location, trading under the name, “The Hawk’s Nest Restaurant”.
Since 1988 the demographic of the local area has changed, as has the demographic of the Club’s membership. There is a proliferation of restaurants in the surrounding area offering every variety of cuisine. These two things combined have had a marked effect on the viability of the Club’s restaurant, and a decision had to be made as to its future. The decision was to continue to provide a fine dining option for members but change to an option that better meets the demographic of the area.
The Hawk’s Nest Restaurant closed on 23rd July for refurbishment and is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday 8th August as “The Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant”. As the name suggests, it will specialise in Chinese cuisine.
There have been many loyal and long term patrons of the Hawk’s Nest Restaurant, and we regret if this change impacts on your enjoyment of the facility. However, your support has not been enough to maintain the viability of the restaurant. The decision to change has been made for the long term benefit of all members to endeavour to maintain a fine dining option in your club.
The Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant will still be a venue you can use for that special occasion. The new restaurant will offer special ‘set menu’ options, competitive pricing, have a small selection of à la carte meals, still offer Yum Cha for lunch, and will provide a great new dining option for all members.
We are excited about the change and we look forward to hosting you in the future.

CAMERA CLUB We were sadly informed of the passing of Gwen Petkovich after a long battle with cancer. Gwen always attended our Award Dinners with her husband Dennis, a club director of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Gwen would never miss our Award Dinner and was a great companion. We express our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Denis. She will be missed. May she rest in peace. Since the last club journal we have enjoyed many informative and enjoyable presentations. In May Malcolm Fackender spoke to us about Flash photography. In June Michael Smyth presented Digital Imaging and our workflow. And at our July meeting we were enthralled by wonderful images from nature’s realm, presented to us by Roy Killen. Roy spoke to us about his images and gave valuable advice in assisting us in our capture of photos from the world around us.In August Ray Finneran will be speaking to us about monochrome photography. September will see a wonderful presentation by Luciano Vranich of the photographic focus of Street Photography and City Life. Luciano is a skilled and sensitive photographer who shares his knowledge and love of photography so generously. And in October our own Gray Sutherland will be presenting images from his recent British tour. So for those of you who are planning a trip to the UK, here is a first class opportunity to obtain first hand, valuable advice on where to photograph and how to capture that magical image. We are always pleased to see new members. Bruce McIntosh our official welcomer, will always be there to offer you a warm greeting to our club. For further Camera Club details please visit our club website www.pbase.com/relccc. We look forward to seeing you. Happy photography. John Maynard
CHESS CLUB The preliminary rounds of our club championship have resulted in the following (the first two players from each group go through to the Final in November/December): Group A - with a perfect score of 11/11, our 2011 champion Donato Mallari was first. Second was Shane Dibley (9/11); Group B – Frank Pacey with a perfect score of 9/9 was first. Stephen Liu (7/9) was second; Group C – a score of 7.5/10 was sufficient to win first place for Joshua Christensen. At the time of writing there is a tie for second place with Egon Cardenas and Bill Gletsos, both on 7/10. This will require a play-off to determine whether Egon or Bill goes through to the Final. Congratulations to all the above finalists. The handicap winners are: Group A – Paul Gluvchinsky; Group B – a triple tie between Mato Mlinaric, Manuel Valenzuela, and Peter Zekic; Group C – Alan Marton. At the time of writing the NSW Chess Association Grade Matches are still in progress. A full report on our teams will be given in the next issue. As always, new players of whatever standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Prospective members are invited to visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com For more information, please contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059), Greig Edwards (0416 248 223) or myself - Dennis Hale (9484 1435).

THE FISHING CLUBCold weather and poor conditions have not put off our brave fisherman and women of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club as the fish are still being caught. The May outing returned 30kgs. In June, with very poor conditions, we still caught 23kgs, and a bit of sunshine on our July outing brought in 40kgs of good fish, including four snapper. Michael Cheng, as usual, caught the heaviest bag with 9.8kgs with George’s snapper at 1.4kgs being the biggest fish. The Fishing Club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Nic Ceh on 9858 2412 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month, at 8pm. Upcoming outings are on: Sunday 5th August; Sunday 2nd September; and Sunday 7th October. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey
GOLF CLUB Richmond was a foggy start with a full field. This was a medal round combined with the first round of Matchplay. Congratulations to all who made it to round two. Medal winners on the day were Steve McElhinney in A grade with a net 67 (his first medal ever after being a member of the club for many years), and the consistent Daryl Allwood in B grade with a net 71. Runners-up on the day were Steve Ferns A grade and Billy Chick, B grade. It was also great to see our travelling visitors Janice and Juan. Our second medal round was played at Lynwood with the A grade medal going to Steve Ferns with a 72 net, who narrowly beat Ulla Wood with 73 net. The B grade medal went to the ever steady Daryl Allwood with 75 net, and Natalie P with 81 net was runner-up. Maybe the girls will be in luck next time. The third round of the stableford trophy was at a new venue, Macarthur Grange, which seemed to swallow a lot of balls, a bit like Lynwood. A grade winner on the day was Tony Tedesco with 38 points, and runner-up was Steve Ferns with 36 points, who also had an eagle on the 18th hole. B grade honours went to Dave McCullum with 37 points, who started the front nine on fire; runner-up was Alex Sokolov with 34 points. The annual Maris/Busher Cup (Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club vs. North Ryde RSL) was held at Massey Park and the trophy went to Ryde-Eastwood; congratulations to everyone for hanging in on a gloomy day. Glenmore Park was home to the final round of the Stableford Trophy, with winners to be announced at Presentation. On the day, A grade honours went to Tony Campbell with 36 points, and B grade to Steve Jeffery with 33 points. Runners-up prizes were A grade Rick Beves with 35 points on count back and B grade Dave McCullum with 29 points. If anyone is interested in joining the golf club enquires can be made via email to [email protected] Don’t forget to check the website for full results, at: www.relgolfclub.com. Good golfing til next time!Annika
INDOOR BOWLSThe Sydney Metropolitan Championships were held in June and our players did very well. The Ladies’ Fours were won by Pat Petty, Doreen McCoy, Claire Grebert and Narelle and Waldock. The Men’s Pairs by Jeffrey Tam and Ron Asser, and Runners-Up men’s Triples, Harry Waldock, Peter Yates, Tony DeLuca. Men’s Fours by John Loveridge, Don Birt, Bob Gale and Ray Catt. The Mixed Fours were Tony Zivkovic, Betty Beck, Kerri Lane, and Michael Andersch. All great results. Our Christmas in July luncheon held in the Ryedale Room was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to Sidney Ho and his staff for the excellent catering. New players are always welcome at Indoor Bowls, with Ladies on Wednesdays at 10am, and Mixed Thursday nights at 7.00pm. Ring Sheila on 9869 7693 or Merle on 9874 5733.
SENIORS CLUB It is with great sadness I have to advise that on 9th June Gwen Petkovich passed away. Gwen was a wonderful member of our Club, she never missed a meeting or bus trip (unless unwell) and was dearly loved by everyone who knew her. Dennis has been an Acting Patron of our Club for a number of years now, and together with Gwen they made a wonderful team. Gwen will be greatly missed and our thoughts, condolences and
love go to Dennis and his family. A group of us spent a wonderful morning touring the State Theatre; what a beautiful place it is. We then made our way to City Tattersalls for lunch – a most enjoyable day. We also enjoyed our annual excursion to Doyle’s at Watson’s Bay for their Winter Lunch, although this year our numbers were sadly depleted. We enjoyed our Christmas in July festivities, held this year held at Altitude 1148 at Bulli. We would love to welcome new Senior members to our Club where you can meet in a friendly environment and where new and lasting friendships can, and are, made So come along and see for yourself. We meet twice a month on the first and third Thursday at 11am. A game of cards (Solo) is played every Thursday at 1.30pm. Membership fee is $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419
SQUASH CLUBWe have just completed the Autumn Competition for 2012. This comp we had two teams competing a Div 5 and a Div 8 team and I am glad to report WE HAVE FINALLY WON A PENNANT! Congratulations must go to the Division 8 team, Graeme Long, Joe Son Kee, Bill Schenk, Jill Long, Sharon Muir & Ernie Speed, a truly wonderful effort. From all reports it was a hard fought win. Graeme won 3-0, Bill won 3-2, (I believe Bill was down 2-0 and fought back like a Trojan) Jill won 3-0, and Joe was not required to play. A truly magnificent win. Well done to all concerned. On another note, Ernie Speed was recently awarded a 15-year medal for competing for 15 years in the Australian Masters National Championships, this year held at Dural. Congratulations Ernie. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Leagues Club for its ongoing support of the Squash Club; it is very much appreciated by all the players. Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a Thought: “A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBHello Members. Well, our last outing was a washout again. This is the second year running that we have not played at the Umina Bowling Club. However, we did attend the bowling club and enjoyed the members’ company. After lunch and some more socialising we made an early departure for home. We have three more outings to come, at Bulli on 22nd July; Avoca on 23rd September; and Ettalong on 4th November. We meet at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club from 9am and the coach departs at 9.30am. We look forward to your company. For any information on membership or venue details please contact Marie Crawley on 9684 1023, Bob Freeland on 9644 4792, or mobile number 0427 003 038. Happy Bowling. B. Freeland
TRAVEL CLUBIt is with much regret that I announce the resignation of our long serving Treasurer, Neville White, due to personal reasons. Neville has been an excellent and efficient Treasurer, for which we thank him. We hope that he and Barbara will continue to attend our meetings and outings when able. We wish them both all the best for the future.
Our Mother’s Day lunch was very successful and the meal excellent, thanks to Sidney. In June we enjoyed a boat trip around Akuna Bay and Church Point where a fish and chips lunch was served. We were lucky that it was a fine day given it came during our rainy period.
Our popular “Christmas in July” trip was held at the Manor House at Mt. Victoria, and quickly became fully booked. In August we make our annual trip to Doyle’s Watson Bay where we enjoy their “Winter Special” lunch. A couple of day outings to Joadja and Symbio Wildlife Park are planned for the next few months, with a three day trip to the Hunter Valley at the end of November to see the Christmas lights at Hunter Valley Gardens. The Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 2pm, and we welcome new members. For further information please contact our Secretary, Margaret Dollar, on 9898 3332.
