SUGAR CANE PULP (Saccharum officinarum) AS MAIN MATERIAL IN PAPERMAKING

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) or popularly known as “tubo” here in the Philippines, refers to any of tall perennial grasses of the family Gramineae (grass family). Native to warm temperate to tropical regions of Asia, they have stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in sugar, and measure two to six meters tall.

Nowadays, sugarcane pulp (bagasse) is somehow being thrown away as a waste in the food-making process. With this, the researchers aim to solve this problem by conducting a research on a possible use of the “wasted” material. The researchers plan to use the sugar cane pulp in the paper-making process to maximize the use of it. The researchers also aim to reduce waste disposed by using the pulp in the practical paper-making process.
