Dear Friends:
The season of Lent is upon us. Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 14 and continues for 40 days (not counting Sundays) until Saturday March 31. It is a season where we focus upon sacrifice. All of our readings on Sunday and during the mid-week services focus upon the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus. Lent is a good time to take a little extra time to reflect upon just how much Jesus endured so that we could
be forgiven and live with the promise of eternal life. Lent is also a season for us to make sacrifices, both to show our willingness to take up our crosses and follow Jesus, and to remind us that whatever sacrifices we may choose to make, they pale in comparison to the tremendous sacrifice of Jesus. The most common way people make sacrifices during lent is to give up something. Historically, people often gave up meat during lent. Today, we might give up coffee, candy, soda, alcohol, or other items we enjoy. Each time we choose not to partake of some item, it should remind us of Jesus’ choice to give his live for us. Others make sacrifices during lent by taking on some act of service to others. People might visit a shut-in, volunteer at a food pantry or soup kitchen, be more diligent in daily devotions and Bible reading. It’s nice to see the difference we are making in our world, and then remember how the sacrifice of Jesus’ changed our world forever. Still others make sacrifices during lent by “giving alms to the poor.” Lent is a great time to support a special project or service organization that helps the poor. There are many worthy Lutheran organizations such as Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Social Services, Lutheran Immigration and Refuge Service that help people in need.
This lent I hope you will use the time to reflect upon the sacrifice of Jesus for you, and ponder what God might be calling you to do when Jesus says: take up your cross and follow me.
Fence Enclosure
The church council is currently soliciting bids to enclose the patio area of the church. The concept is
to have matching black iron fencing run from the west end of North Hall to the north side of Endter
hall and to have fencing go from the center of the preschool building to the main sanctuary. We
have had numerous incidents of people sleeping overnight, using the bathroom in the garden areas,
and hanging around the church at night. We are seeking a design that would allow gates to open
and provide a wide entrance during church events, but could be closed in the evenings, when the
youth group is at church, and when no one is at the church. If you have any questions or concerns,
please contact the church office, Pastor Brian, or our Church council president John Prothero.
In Christ,
Pastor Brian
