What is STAAR?
• The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, has replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).
STAAR Basics• Tests for grades 3-8 cover the same
subjects TAKS did. • There will be more test questions. • Students will be asked to do more
complex work. • They will write more. • Students will have a maximum of 4
hours to complete each test.
STAAR Testing Date
• Writing – March 30-31, 2015• Mathematics – April 21, 2015• Reading – April 22, 2015
STAAR vs. TAKS(Main Differences)
STAAR• Assessed Curriculum -Referred to as Reporting Categories -Process standards will be assessed in
context and items will be coded with both sets of standards
• Rigor- More processing involved
-Higher cognitive complexity level
• Time- 4 hours to complete test
• Performance Standards– Readiness Standards– Supporting Standards– Based on Grade Level
TAKS• Assessed Curriculum -Referred to as Objectives -Process standards were coded
in isolation as Nature Science
• Rigor– Less processing required– Factual informational, basic
recall and understanding
• Time - No Time Limit
• Performance Standard- Performance Standards were only linked to one grade and one subject
Readiness vs. Supporting
• Readiness standards have the following characteristics. – They are essential for success in the current grade or course.– They are important for preparedness for the next grade or course. – They support college and career readiness. – They necessitate in-depth instruction. – They address broad and deep ideas.
• Supporting standards have the following characteristics.– Although introduced in the current grade or course, they may be
emphasized in a subsequent year. – Although reinforced in the current grade or course, they may be
emphasized in a previous year.– They play a role in preparing students for the next grade or course but
not a central role. – They address more narrowly defined ideas.
STAAR MATH
Some things to know:Students must develop strong problem-solving
skillsStudents must be able to break up complex
wording in multistep problems without giving up
The student must be able to justify answers with written explanations because some questions ask for HOW to solve the problem.
Math Strategies
Reading Strategies• With the STAAR Reading, 4th graders need to focus on: • Figure 19 – comprehension skills• Strategies of good readers and good writers, identify and use transitional
words such as first, next, last, author’s point of View, summarizing, main idea and details.
• Students must gist each 1-2 paragraphs (2 or 4 words that tell what happened in the paragraph)
• Students must prove each answer. They can either go back in the passage and write the paragraph or line number the answer is found in OR show their thinking.
Strategies of good readers are:
*Use your previous knowledge.*Make predictions and confirm them.*Ask yourself questions as you read.*Create mental images.*Analyze the context to confirm the meaning.*Examine the structure and format of the text.*Use graphic elements to help you.*Consult reference material.*Re-read if needed.*Summarize it.
What is a good summary?• A good summary expresses the most important ideas and
actions.• It follows the same order as the story.• It is shorter than the original story.
• Students need to read at least 30 minutes each night.
• Some students will need to hear themselves read.
STAAR Reading Questions
Writing
• Students need to write every day. Perhaps they can make a list, write a letter, a poem, a short story, a play, or summarize a paragraph.
• Students should write with an audience in mind.
• The stories should be revised by adding details which paint vivid images in the readers head.
• Students should edit their stories for mistakes in spelling and grammar.
• When writing a paragraph, students should remember to indent, start each sentence with a capital letter, and end the sentence with the correct punctuation.
• For reading and writing, students should think about important details. The main idea is the theme of the reading and writing. The details explain and support the main idea. They should ask themselves these questions- Who? What? When? Where? Why?
