8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Family Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
3. To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish; but naught changeth thee.
4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
‘tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.
Words: Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908)
Music: St Denio, adapted from a Welsh song set to a hymn in John Roberts Caniadau y Cyssegre 1839 (Ancient & Modern – 676)
The Collect
Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the cross:
give us grace to perceive his glory,
that we may be strengthened to suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Exodus 34.29-35
Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the
two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face
shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw
Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But
Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to
him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterwards all the Israelites came near, and he
gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.
When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever
Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until
he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been
commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was
shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with
him.
Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 3.12–4.2
Since we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a
veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that
was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when
they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in
Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over
their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is
the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with
unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being
transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this
comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are
engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful
things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by
the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of
everyone in the sight of God.
5
Gradual Hymn*
1. Lord Jesus, once you spoke to men,
upon the mountain, in the plain:
O help us listen now, as then,
and wonder at your words again.
2. We all have secret fears to face,
our minds and motives to amend;
we seek your truth, we need your grace,
our living Lord and present friend.
3. The gospel speaks – and we receive
your light, your love, your own command:
O help us live what we believe
in daily word of heart and hand.
Words: H C A Gaunt (1902-1983)
Music: Winchester New, adapted from a chorale in Musikalisches Hand-Buch Hamburg 1690

Gospel Reading – Luke 9.28-36[37-43a]
Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became
dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They
appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to
accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with
sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood
with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to
be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’
Peter did not know what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and
overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the
cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ When the
voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And the disciples kept silent and in those days
told no one any of the things they had seen. [On the next day, when they had come
down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. Just then a man from the crowd
shouted, ‘Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. Suddenly a spirit
seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It throws him into convulsions until he foams at
the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. I begged your disciples to cast it
out, but they could not.’ Jesus answered, ‘You faithless and perverse generation, how
much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.’ While he
was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked
the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. And all were
astounded at the greatness of God. Everyone was amazed at all that he was doing.]
6
Offertory Hymn*
1. Come, living God, when least expected,
when minds are dull and hearts are cold,
through sharpening word and warm affection
revealing truths as yet untold.
2. Break from the tomb in which we hide you
to speak again in startling ways;
break through the words in which we bind you
to resurrect our lifeless praise.
3. Come now, as once you came to Moses
within the bush alive with flame;
or to Elijah on the mountain,
by silence pressing home your claim.
4. So, let our minds be sharp to read you
in sight or sound or printed page,
and let us greet you in our neighbours,
in ardent youth or mellow age.
5. Then, through our gloom, your Son will meet us
as vivid truth and living Lord,
exploding doubt and disillusion
to scatter hope and joy abroad.
6. Then we will share his radiant brightness,
and, blazing through the dread of night,
illuminate by love and reason,
for those in darkness, faith's delight.
Words: Alan Gaunt (b 1935)
Music: Spiritus Vitae, Mary Jane Hammond (1878-1964)

(Ancient & Modern – 615)
Communion Anthem*
My eyes for beauty pine, my soul for Goddës grace,
No other care nor hope is mine, to heaven I turn my face.
One splendour thence is shed from all the stars above:
‘Tis names when God’s name is said, ‘tis Love, ‘tis heavenly Love.
And every gentle heart that burns with true desire,
is lit from eyes that mirror part of that celestial fire.
Words: Robert Bridges (1844-1930)
Music: Herbert Howells (1892-1983)
Communion Hymn*
1. Help us to help each other, Lord,
each other's cross to bear;
let each his friendly aid afford,
and feel another’s care.
2. Up into thee, our living head,
let us in all things grow,
and by thy sacrifice be led
the fruits of love to show.
7
3. Touched by the lodestone of thy love
let all our hearts agree;
and ever towards each other move,
and ever move towards thee.
4. This is the bond of perfectness,
thy spotless charity.
O let us still, we pray, possess
the mind that was in thee.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Dunfermline, Scottish Psalter 1615 (Ancient & Modern – 657)
Post Communion Prayer Holy God,
we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:
may we who are partakers at his table
reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save.
This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Final Hymn
1. Meekness and majesty,
manhood and deity,
in perfect harmony
the Man who is God.
Lord of eternity
dwells in humanity,
kneels in humility
and washes our feet.
O what a mystery,
meekness and majesty.
Bow down and worship
for this is your God, this is your God!
2. Father’s pure radiance,
perfect in innocence,
yet learns obedience
to death on a cross.
Suffering to give us life,
conquering through sacrifice,
and as they crucify
prays: ‘Father, forgive.’
3. Wisdom unsearchable,
God the invisible,
love indestructible
in frailty appears.
Lord of infinity,
stooping so tenderly,
lifts our humanity
to the heights of his throne.

year we will be looking at the Psalms
as prayers for today’s church. Full
details are opposite, and you can sign
up on the sheets which are now
available in all the Team churches.
Treasurers Needed
All Saints Oakham PCC is urgently
seeking two members for the
Treasury Team, to cover both day-to-
day tasks and monthly collection of
figures for PCC meetings. No
experience is needed as training will
be given. We hope to hold a meeting
at the end of February to discuss what
is involved. Please speak to Peter Hill,
Lee, Alison Long or Ann Blackett for
more information or to sign up.
Welcome to our new
Curate
We welcome the Revd Owen Williams,
who has joined the Oakham Team this
week as Assistant Curate. Owen was
ordained deacon in 2013 and priest in
2014, previously serving as Assistant
Curate in Uppingham. Owen and his
family will continue to live in Uppingham
with Owen commuting on a daily basis.
Owen trained for ordination at Ridley
Hall in Cambridge, and prior to that
worked in computing down in Brighton.
Help Needed
As you know, we take part in Christian
Aid Week each year. This year, our
treasurer has had to withdraw after some
years’ service, so we need a treasurer for
the period 15 to 24 May. This doesn’t
involve complicated accounts, but the
ability to count the coins donated, and pay
them into the bank. If you can help with
this importannt task, please ring Peter
Townsend on 759286, or leave a
message.

Oakham PCC
At the meeting on 25 January,
Oakham PCC received a presentation
from Oakham in Bloom with a
proposal to redevelop the Garden of
Remembrance on the south side of
the church, and permission will be
sought to proceed with this. Plans for
the new boiler are progressing, and it
is hoped a faculty application will be
ready for the next meeting. A faculty
will be sought for upgrading and
automating the church clock winding
and striking mechanisms. Full minutes
are available on the noticeboard by
the north door.

The Foodbank is currently short of
