DESCRIPTION
This luxury cabin home is situated on nearly 200
acres, almost half of which is preserved as open
space, at Angler Mountain Ranch in Silverthorne.
The 2,700-square-foot residence features an
exterior clad with moss rock, hand-hewn siding,
beetle-kill pine trim and rough-sawn timbers.
Designed as a family retreat, the interior fea-
tures an open floor plan with large windows that
provide panoramic views of the Gore Range. The
main floor includes, a master suite, family room
and kitchen complete with alder cabinetry, granite
slab countertops and stainless-steel appliances.
In the living room, natural alder doors and trim,
hand-scraped wood floors, beetle-kill pine tim-
bers, and a ledge stone fireplace provide a warm
and inviting rustic feeling.
Many ownership opportunities exist at Angler
Mountain Ranch, including custom homesites,
2,400- to 2,800-square-foot cabin homes, and
paired homes that range in size from 1,800 to
2,400 square feet. Nearly all of the homes and
homesites feature a south to west orientation for
maximum sun exposure and Gore Range views.
A private lake awaits anglers, while hiking and
snowshoeing are within easy reach via a trailhead
connection to Ptarmigan National Forest.
DIRECTIONS
From I-70, take the Silverthorne exit. Head north
on Blue River Parkway (Hwy. 9) for two miles.
Turn right on Bald Eagle Road and continue over
the bridge. Proceed up the hill and make the sec-
ond left onto Buckskin Lane. 40 Buckskin Lane is
the first home on the right.

Situated in Angler Mountain Ranch, this home was designed by Boulder, Colorado-based architect David A. Beal, a leader in Colorado’s sustainable building movement. Before you come visit, Apex Moun-tain Homes wishes to advise you that this home is “Rated G.” Here, “G” stands for Green Built: Sustainable for All Residents!
The building features and techniques imple-mented here by Apex Mountain Homes are a synergistic combination of low-tech, old-fash-ioned common sense and cutting-edge green technologies designed to reduce the home’s carbon footprint. The home functions as a com-plete system, encompassing everything from the food grown on site to the energy conserved and the message of resource stewardship it sends to future generations.
Features include an attached Mediterranean-climate greenhouse and earth-sheltered garage roof garden for growing food. An 8.1-kW solar system generates electricity for the home and the owners’ 100-percent electric car. Energy usage was further reduced by installing hanging racks in the laundry room instead of a clothes dryer. The home’s design is centered around its primary heat source: a Tulikivi solid-fuel masonry heater, which is the first of its kind to be ap-proved in Silverthorne.
This home redefines sustainable building and custom home comfort, two features formerly

ated on a one-acre-plus lot in Angler Mountain

While searching for a site on which to build their
mountain home, Kansas City residents Lynn and
Doug found this wooded lot close to the town of
Breckenridge. And after meeting the staff at Mountain
Log Homes of Colorado, they knew they had found
the right team to make their dream home a reality.
The couple fell in love with Pioneer Log Homes of
British Columbia’s large, handcrafted Western red
cedar logs and decided to incorporate them into their
home’s design. Breathe in and look up as you tour
this home to appreciate the aroma and beauty of
these extraordinary logs.
Doug also wanted central gathering spaces for
family reunions with the couple’s three grown children,
outdoor living space where they could enjoy their Ten
Mile Range views, and lots of room for the family to
cook and enjoy meals together. Kitchenscapes helped
the couple design a gourmet kitchen with a large
central island.
Light and fresh air were also priorities for the
homeowners. They got both with a large wall of
low-E windows in the great room, as well as operable
windows thoughtfully positioned throughout the home
to ensure good airflow. Strategically placed task and
mood lighting highlight the unique log features, while
four fireplaces—including a wood burner for log-cabin
authenticity—provide warmth during the cold winters.
Each of this home’s bedroom suites has a unique
theme. The bunkroom, which sleeps six, features
genuine multicolored Pendleton blankets and animal-
themed lighting. The natural stone on the fireplaces
and bathroom tile contribute to the home’s sophisti-
cated lodge feel. The game room is yet another great
gathering space and features a wet bar, log pool
table, and access to a covered paver patio complete
with a hot tub and gas firepit.
The entry foyer was designed to highlight “Peace
Offering,” a bronze sculpture created by the late
artist Walt Horton. The homeowners have given their
own special names to the whimsical animals found
throughout their home, including “Benjamin Beaver,”
who was hand-carved into a log tail on the deck.
Says homeowner Lynn: “My dream is that everyone
who visits may find a wonderful peace and feeling of
warmth and love surrounding them.”

This home pushes the envelope for green building
in the high country: The solar-inspired showpiece
features the work of numerous local artisans and
is expected to earn LEED for Homes Silver certi-
fication. The homeowner chose Carlson Builders
for the firm’s expertise in sustainable construction
practices and the builder succeeded in integrating
architectural aesthetics with sustainable design
and construction, all while meeting a modest
custom-home budget.
Tremendous exposure to the sun’s rays is at
the core of this home’s design. Solar techniques
include two photovoltaic arrays, solar panels to
heat domestic hot water, daylighting, and unique
thermo-siphoning air panels on the south wall.
The home’s exterior is a tight skin that wraps the
interior spaces; openings are appropriate to the
home’s function and contemporary theme. Cedar
shingles and siding, zinc accents and a stone
base emphasize a natural look that will weather
well in the harsh high-altitude environment.
Interiors continue the theme of contemporary
snow-country home; here, the materials palette is
natural, clean and elegant. Unique features include
a great room fireplace with cold-rolled steel man-
tel, paneled wood walls with hidden built-ins, ex-
panses of floor-to-ceiling glass, stained concrete
and ash hardwood floors, recycled glass mosaic
tile, and locally made concrete countertops.
Thanks to its innovative design and construction,
this residence is projected to use less than half of
the energy consumed by a typical home of its size.

From this project’s inception, the owners set out
to create a new home with a sense of history.
With features including timbers reclaimed from
the railroad trestles that once spanned the Great
Salt Lake, hardwood flooring salvaged from a
barn in Missouri, and doors crafted from beetle-
kill pine, nearly every element of this house has a
story to tell. With five bedrooms and baths, the
home is roomy enough to serve as a family retreat
for years to come.
Treading lightly on the land is important to the
homeowners, and the use of solar panels, low-
VOC paint, and tight insulation helps to minimize
their home’s impact on the environment. A re-
claimed walnut countertop, cabinets crafted from
beetle-kill pine and walnut sourced from storm-
damaged trees, soy-based stains and sealants,
recycled shingles and LED lighting add to the
beauty of the home, while furthering the goal of
sustainable design. The home’s furnishings follow
the same sustainable principles; with so many
green features, the design team recently sought
LEED certification. The end result is a beautiful,
comfortable home that sustainably serves as a
family retreat.

Situated in Frisco’s prestigious Waterdance Subdivision with views of Peak One, Buffalo Mountain and Lake Dillon, this stunning mountain home was designed by Boulder, Colorado-based architect David A. Beal in the style and tradition of Apex Mountain Homes. The architect and builder were tasked with constructing a budget-conscious, energy efficient home that would be affordable for both the short and long term, and here they accomplished just that.
For this project, the guiding principle was practicality—while maintaining beauty and the highest quality. Together, Apex Mountain Homes and the homeowners adopted a concept of “Real Green.” This meant staying away from the latest “green” gimmicks and selecting products and processes that offer real value.
First, Apex used a framing method called Keymark, a groundbreaking way to transform the architect’s plan into a 3D framing plan. Every framing element was detailed and sent to a Ger-man Hundegger saw, measured exactly, then cut and marked for immediate assembly by the on-site framing crew. This process not only reduced waste but also improved the speed and quality of the construction.
Cabinetry and interior trim were created by Cut-ting Edge Woodworking, an award-winning Lead-ville-based firm that employs the latest computer and tooling techniques. The elegant handcrafted
cabinet fronts were installed at the end of the project to preserve their perfection. The enviable living room ceiling features salvaged beetle-kill pine from Vintage Woods. An all-natural process was used to give the wood an instant patina.
The “Real Green” efforts have paid off, as this home has scored a remarkable 135 points under the Summit Sustainable Building Code, and has also qualified for a refund of the plan-review fee by the town of Frisco. The homeowners were very pleased about their collaboration with Apex Mountain Homes and David A. Beal and Associates. “Not only did we get more than we expected,” they say, “but it was great fun.”

Take Frisco exit 203 and proceed south on Hwy. 9 toward Breckenridge. Turn left on CR1004 into the Waterdance subdivision. Turn right immedi-ately on Waterdance Drive, then take the second left into Pemmican Court.
